Apple had to save Touch ID and 2GB RAM from last year to this year to give customers that 'I want that' factor :D
Or, they were having trouble getting enough Touch ID modules to supply the iPhone 5S demand, and they held off for another year so they'd actually have iPad Airs to sell in 2013.

This year's iPad will also have a more advanced processor. Probably a better camera. Probably not a Project Tango-like 3D environmental mapper, but that will probably come eventually. It could have additional bells and whistles, such as environmental sensors.

If Apple has the means to put in new features (and keep the tablet affordable), they won't delay a whole year. They'll put in everything that is ready and practical, knowing they have plenty of features in the pipeline that aren't yet practical, but will be for future models.

2GB of RAM in the next iPad would be very welcome. It would be so nice to go back and forth between five or six tabs in Safari without waiting for pages to reload.

I don't care if it has 1 or 1.46 GB of ram, as long as it performs without compromise. That is how Apple tries to make things work. Maybe 2GB is the right number, but maybe not?

Touch ID is the only thing that will make me want a new Air and even then, it's not like I'm not still digging the Air. It is hard to go back to the iPad 4, because it's just so heavy compared to the Air and battery life is significantly less too.

All iPads and iPhones do run with compromise. Safari is horrible with the page reloads, it may be something small to most people but its a huge for me. Horrible experience I would like to see gone or less frequent.

Stop it you're making too much sense. Don't you know Apple purposely leaves stuff out so they'd have something to add the next year? Just like they purposely constrain supply of new iDevices in order to create faux demand. :p

What about a Flash unit to make the iPad's camera usable in dim evening lighting?
Can't be any shortages of those.
Cost? less than 50 cents probably
Plenty of space in the iPad
Zero effect on battery unless you use it.

I am jealous, but will not be updating from my Air. Hopefully the first gen air and previous are not hamstrung by iOS 8.

The Air is powerful enough to take anything you throw at it. If iOS 8 runs slowly on it, the only reason would be because they intentionally coded it to run slowly. They won't.

And yet when Samsung does anything remotely close to something Apple does, people are calling for the company to get burnt to the ground.

I know, and I point out how shortsighted that is as well. If these companies didn't build off of each other's ideas, the industry as a whole would be well behind where it is now. We consumers benefit from the fierce competition. The worst thing that can happen is for one company to actually "win".

That's all good! Let's hope the iPhone gets that boost too!

This is good for the iPad, I'm on the fence about it in the iPhone without knowing the true cost to battery life.

RAM is super cheap and doesn't impact energy or size significantly. Until you start pushing the envelope of what DDR3L can do (which no one is doing) adding more memory is literally a win-win situation.

It impacts energy significantly as it is ALWAYS drawing power. Windows Phone developers have weighed in on this many times.

Yah either way apple is copying -

Where are all the Samsung Microsoft haters now?!

Reveal yourself NOW!!! I COMMAND THEE!

Well u asked so here's the response of one Microsoft and Samsung hater:
I stopped feeding the trolls a long time ago and instead of defending Apple 24/7 I decided to learn all I could about the company and decided to be an ultimate fanboy and learned about the stock market and invested in apple. Can u say you love Samsung or Google or Microsoft so much you'd invest in the company other than buying their products?

I personally turned 20 grand into more than 130 grand a while back in apple stock. Imagine what u could do with all this negative energy. Almost six times my initial investment and it's still growing.

If u spend more then two hours a day arguing with others over what's better then ur spending more time doing that then I did making over 100grand.

Also, last time I checked Samsung consistently copies apple to the point of endless lawsuits, their own cables mimic apples, their devices are not stand unique, they closely resemble our own, they even use commercials making fun of apple when their own devices were known to be worse for the same issues and Samsung even sent their own people to apple retail locations to try and see what we are doing right so they could copy us and don't forget how they even had plans to copy other companies as well and even used those company names that they wanted to copy as internal code names for projects. I state all this as a previous owner of Galaxy phone because my employer at the time didn't allow iPhones which has since changed.

As far as Microsoft goes windows Vista & 7 was almost a blatant copy of Mac, disagree? Ever see Pirates of Silicon Valley? Plenty of written articles pointing this out.

Also have u wondered why Google or Microsoft hasn't sued Apple on the things we borrow from them? It's because we pay them royalties for things they copyright that we didn't.

Bottom line is Samsung copies then fights the legal battles. It makes them a lot of money approaching it this way as its a lengthy process to stop a product already on sale. So they don't ask for permission and they don't ask for forgiveness either. Don't believe me? Look at previous articles by mac rumors and 9to5mac where there's been cited information almost literally stating they intend to copy and fight any legal battles as they come along.

PS as I write this my stock is continuing to make me money how about yours?

I'll upgrade if

1. RAM gets bumped to 2GB. I'm sick of the constant tab/app reloads and out of memory crashes with the current air.
2. Touch ID
3. Base storage is doubled.

Fingers crossed.

Don't tell me. Let Apple know... Add your name to the literally tens of people who have requested a flash unit on the iPad, and maybe they'll put it in.

I wouldn't use a flash very often, but it could be useful for document scanning.

The camera flash is an example of a feature that Apple probably left out for reasons other than that they were saving it to make next year's iPad more attractive. It doesn't mean they won't change their minds, but so far, it's in the pile with Adobe Flash, an IR blaster, a micro SD slot, and a removable battery.

I'll say the chance of 2. is 100%, 1. is 90% and 3. is 60%.

My ipad 3 seems to work fine with 1gb of ram so why need the upgrade?

But my iPad Air with 1GB of Ram keeps crashing constantly due to low memory.during basic Safari browsing,or using any random App.
It's so annoying and un-acceptable.
and if you read a little about it you will find that there are hundreds of similar complaints.
That's why.;)

And yet when Samsung does anything remotely close to something Apple does, people are calling for the company to get burnt to the ground.

The irony, which you fail to grasp is Samsung users say the same thing that you just accused apple users of...they simply say "its not the same thing" or "apple didnt invent (gold) (fingerprints) (tablets) (rectangles) (any other obscure thing you want to insert here)"

Both sides are bumbling idiots. With that being said, Samsung is the only android oem I can't stand because their fans are a million times worse than any apple udder.

I agree. This bump is actually a little disconcerting from an iPhone perspective, as most likely it will happen for iPhone too. This means an additional drain on the battery. Considering the fact that the battery bump is minimal, no software optimization in the world will be able to offset the energy the additional ram and the larger screen will require.

Not that I do not want a 2 GB ram for the iphone. I do, alongwith a 3000mAh battery.

I find it hilarious that most times the ones using the "revolutionary" term are the naysayers trolls.
Eh.

um apple says revolutionary all the time during their keynotes lol :apple:

Eh.

Not sure if you're joking, but I've never understood this response from people. Why wouldn't a company use the ideas that worked for competitors, in any industry? It's called not reinventing the wheel, and it's what drives improvement.

well you bring up the point that some members hate on samsung for "copying" yet when apple does it - it's "revolutionary"
