Gosh, I'm glad they stopped the rampant Covid contagion going on at the apple stores. I'm certain that the carefully documented disease transmission there was instrumental in the scientifically principled decision to shut them down. After all, the UK government has such an unblemished track record in rigorously following the science.
You know, lockdowns are there to stop people from gathering. So it’s completely fine to shut down Apple stores.
And afaik 3/4 of COVID infections aren’t exactly traceable so you closing store and restaurant is a good move.

I appreciate Apple must have their reasons why they haven’t rolled out iUP to online in the U.K. but given how things are at the moment I would have thought now would have been the perfect chance to follow American operations?

Just my personal opinion; the health and safety of people comes way above!

In my local shopping centre in the UK, the Apple Store was the only store where everyone wore masks. Properly over mouth and nose. No exception. The only store with an orderly, two meter distanced queue outside. With everyone in the queue wearing a mask. Also the only shop with _very visible_ security. No "the customer is always right". But "if you think you don't need to wear a proper mask, then we think you are not a customer and you can p*** off. "

I'm also on the IUP and was wondering what will happen. I had read click and collect is available but if this is an official Apple announcement and they are closing, I hope they do switch to the US way of doing the upgrades through mail order.
During the last lockdown, in my local shopping centre they had guards at the entrance who asked you what essential business you had to take care off in the shopping centre. I had to go to the pharmacy twice, that was essential. Picking your iPhone up would not be essential. Maybe to you, but not to anyone else.

Funny how the coronavirus was weaponized and used by left-wing Democrat governors to oppress people in the United States, but the UK national government run by a right-wing government has shown it can play the same game. Reminds me of when George Bush had a right-wing war on Iraq and Tony Blair sold his as a left-wing one...

These shutdowns are for nothing more than oppressing the populace and politicians showing you just how much power they have over you (the prole). Your “side” isn’t winning, you’re just getting the oppression from people you like
Democratic governors in the US didn’t “weaponize” Covid-19 to oppress people 🙄 That’s a really twisted view of the science-based public health measures that are necessary to try to keep people alive

They did it to reduce the spread, just like masks. The foolish Republican governors who are being overrun with Covid now are why we have nearly 100,000 new cases a day.

It’s Trump, a Republican, and his fellow travelers who have weaponized Covid-19, and the wearing of masks, specifically.

You should expand your news sources and maybe read some US-based reporting.

You should consider deleting your comment and never speaking on the topic again. Ignorance is why the problem with this virus continues to this day. This specific ignorance you've displayed. You should, frankly, be ashamed of yourself.

I wonder how much money was wasted on your education.

One difference between this lockdown and the last one - despite non-essential shops closing, click-and-collect is allowed to continue. I assume Apple will still be allowing this.

Also „enjoying“ our 2nd Lockdown in Germany right now. Thankfully they didn’t shut down stores! The only fun left this month

I can see this being a real pain for those who would normally want store purchases and especially those on IUP, but as someone who orders online for home delivery a silver lining might be it gives us a little more time after 1pm on Friday before delivery times slip, as hopefully they can redistribute store stock to online delivery stock :)

I know there are bigger problems and everything, but I wonder what apple’s strategy will be for those of us who would be upgrading to the Pro Max who are now unable to go to stores. Will they have a click and collect as allowed by the restrictions? I’ve already paid 2 more months of my plan than I needed and don’t really fancy paying a third.
You're absolutely right.

Ugh. I hate reading the comments here and everywhere and seeing how divided the world is. Be kind.

Secondly, I hope Apple Stores can at find a way to stay open for Genius Bar appointments. Having a repair done during lockdown was a tremendous difficulty.

I think one of our biggest societal shortcomings is identifying as left or right and failing to think critically outside of that parameter. Power corrupts and this can be seen on both sides.

History will show that lockdownss only prolong the inevitable and prolong the misery. In the end, the virus will take the same number of people
That maybe true. But the lockdowns also help flatten the curve so hospitals can cope up with the number of people needing treatment. So even if the virus infects the same number of people, more of those people can be saved.

Everything seems to devolve, one way or another into Orange Man Bad, It's Trump's fault, or the fault of the politicians I don't like, or whatever.

It's a virus. To think humans have that much control over it is hubris. A lot of people have gotten sick and or died. The fact that so few in relationship to world population have died is sort of a miracle.

In the US, all that is Covid seems to be laid at Trump's feet. I don't think that's fair. HE shoulders some blame, no doubt. But so does the entire body politic. This would include the majority of world leaders. By any metric this is a world wide problem. A humanity problem. Not a US, or UK or China, or EU problem.

In every country it seems as though the opposition "party" has seized on the opportunity to lay blame, point fingers, and make accusations for something that is essentially outside the control of any human at the present time. Infections numbers are rising in the US and the EU. Many of those infected in the US can't trance their infection back to a single event anymore. Some people get infected and die, while their spouse who shared a bed with them never even contracted the virus. There's no controlling something like that, so there's no blaming it on one person or party, or organization.

It's human nature to want someone to blame. We like to point fingers, make accusations, anoint scapegoats and elevate heroes.

I think we are reaching the point where people are so tired and worn out by it all that a large enough majority are going to say the hell with it and just do what they want. They will deal with the consequences whatever they are and move on with life.

I've got a MBP in for repair at the moment with Apple UK that isn't due to be ready until Friday! Wonder if they will ship it back to me...
