Didn't they say that they made studies and found that 9.7 inch was the perfect size at launch?

anyway 9.7 is exactly perfect for me, but the iPad lineup is getting segmented.

Its very clear that Tim is behind this as he feels like a new product should be released for every 3% of customers. Its unlike Jobs who believed in the 1 product fits all method. Remember the 4x4 computer matrix?

Ah Apple! Please bring the TouchBar to the iPad. Can we have an iPad with another touch Bar at the top????

It would be amazing.

Also - can you remove all ports and put 1 USB-C only please?

We would need some nice leather bands for it and don't forget to over price it please!!! In 2017 salaries will be much higher and the product will be made by Trumpa Lumpas in US!!

Thank you Tim! Looking forward for an exciting 2017.

This is pretty much the nightmare headline for the anti-IBM Apple loyalists from years gone by.

Apple putting out tailored versions for enterprise needs all to protect this unsustainable growth. Kinda sad.

Hey there. You said unsustainable growth. Apple iPad sales have fallen year over year for the last 3 years, except for 2 quarters (which did not come close to reversing the overall net decrease started 3 years ago).

In 2010, with the technology available at the time, yes. In the time since we've had drastic reductions in weight and size of the device itself.

A 9.7" iPad in 2010 weighed 730g (3G model) vs the 2016 model that weighs 444g, that's 40% lighter. A larger iPad in 2010 would have been an absolute brick of a device and far too heavy to use.

How an earth can anyone believe this story, or rather the reasoning.

So a 9.7" screen is too small for this segment of the market, but a 10.5" screen is perfect.

That 0.7" makes the difference between unusable and usable does it?

I would bet, if you did blind tests with random public, and swapped a 9.7 and 10.5" screen almost no-one would know the difference unless they were side by side.

I love the screen being a littler larger, and bezels being thinner but I don't buy this story's reasoning.

I think the funniest thing is to imagine the design meeting.

Employee: "In this report it says that most people are buying tablets larger than 10.5, and in business it's Windows hybrids.

Cook: We can fix that. Make the iPad 10.5"

Employee: Mr. Cook, I'm not sure you understood the point. It's probably not the size. All those larger tablets are full powered PCs.

Ives: He said make it 10.5"!

To be fair, launch was several years ago. Things change. Ask Blackberry what happens when you don't keep up.

I've owned 5 iPads over the years. Current 9.7" Pro is by far my favorite, but with how useful the Pencil has become, I can definitely see the appeal of a bit more space without having to go to the 12.9" size. Hate to lose compatibility of my keyboard though - those things are too expensive to be replacing every generation. I'll likely stick with this setup for a few years because it's hard to see how they are going to improve this setup all that much.

Way to go, Apple! Completely abandon your professional market by ignoring the Mac Pro for 4 years, ignoring the Mac Mini for 4 years, and never delivering a truly professional MacBook Pro that isn't a toy... but give us a stupid picture book for $300 and yet another unnecessary size of the iPad. Apple has gone insane under Tim Cook's "leadership", if you can actually call it "leadership". Oh, and while you're at it, Tim, why don't you discontinue your entire Wifi router lineup as well? Oh wait, you've already done that. Way to go, Tim!

I wonder what sort of resolution a 10.5” iPad might have. Going with the existing 2048x1536 resolution means a lower PPI, and I don't think Apple should be introducing yet another resolution for developers to support (I am seeing very few apps support the 12.9” iPad as is).

I would have thought that the iPad Mini is too popular to abandon. I recall seeing sales figures that showed that the Mini 2 and 4 combined to outsell all other iPad models last holiday season.

This is all well and good but it won't make the iPad an more viable as a productivity device until significant changes are made to iOS to support it.

Marketing the iPad Pro and a laptop replacement then including next to nothing focussed on the iPad in iOS 10 was just bizarre.

Honestly I think the iPad suffers to an extent from the same problem as the phone, the 9.7 could stand to be a bit bigger but the 12.9 is too big and unwieldy. The 4.7 and 5.5 inch phone are the same to me.

Lets not be silly.

- iOS is crippled
- Apple is neglecting Macs/"Pros"
- The lineup is fragmented
- Tim's gotta go

Did I miss any? Macrumors is hilarious.

Pretty much spot on. I know you are being sarcastic, but Apple is becoming Dell. All devices must have same features and 3 sizes max (8, 10 and 12-13") that would differ by storage and battery size.

I'm not sure what a 10.5" based tablet solves. I'm not against it. I'm just wondering if the difference between the 10.5 is not so minor when you have a 9.7 and a 12.5 already. is 1" in the middle of those really different?

and don't get rid of the mini. The linup of 7", 10.5" and 12.9" is a good lineup to have. Just fix the pricing and naming scheme to reduce some of the confusion

7.8" iPad Mini
9.7" iPad
12.9 ipad Plus

this would also bring it in line with their iPhone linup

4" iPhone Mini (SE)
4.8" iPhone
5.5" iPhone Pllus

drop the "pro" because calling it that is clearly causing confusion and anger.
And fix the price. the iPad's already were a premium priced product compared to most of the competition. The increase in price just meant that the price became more like "premium++" in pricing. For many people especially who are on Air or Air2's already, that increase in price, might be a strong barrier to upgrade, especially if the features of the Pro don't really increase those users perceived value

Based on price right now, the iPad Air 2 really seems to be the best Value when you compare price to what you get. In fact, I'd say the iPad Air 2 is one of, if not the best valued tablet currently on the market. Though, i'm still more than content on my Air

That sums it up completely.

And for me, when will users be able to back-up / restore their iPads to / from an external drive?

So sticking with tradition will this one sport necessary features that the bigger one doesn't?

Meh, doesn't anyone even care? Our iPad usage has fallen over 80% in the past year. We have two iPad mini 2's and an iPad 4 and I have no intention to replace them when they break.

Screen size is just a number and isn't something that is 'copied' per se. The Samsung thread was as such because it was just the latest thing in a long, long line them copying Apple's designs.

There's three pages of it here. Sure some are a little sketchy but you get the point.

http://samsungcopiesapple.tumblr.com/
This is comedy gold!!!! What part of its a wind up thread did you not get.? They have done glossy black since the s7 came out 6 months before the iPhone came out and copied glossy black. So tell.me again how it's the latest in a long line.??
What's your take on small tablets, large phones, pencils, wireless charging, large tablets, waterproof, oled screens and on and on where Apple have shamelessly stolen ideas and designs from Samsung. I bet you haven't the guts to reply to this thread.

And which of these rumoured iPads aims at the enterprise customer specifically while being less attractive for other groups of users?
