omg i got a kick out of this. I posted this in an IRC chat and we all just cracked up with these.

An incident similar to the Cup Holder happened in our office when the office upgraded to computers with CD-drives.

One old fogie truly used the CD drive tray as a cup holder. The small styrofoam cup fit perfectly into the cut-out. He turned off the computer, the tray retracted and sliced the cup, spilling hot coffee. He jumped up screaming my name as though it was my fault.

Thank you

So there will be two account that you can switch from and only one that you really use. the other just because the computer needs an admin account

When you start up OS X for the first time it guides you through creating an account. This account is always an administrator account. After that you can create user accounts (with less privileges) as you like. In System Preferences there is an icon called "accounts" that lets you do this easily.

Next time you start up the computer or try to log in you will be presented with a list of existing accounts to choose from. Simply select the new account, enter the password and you are in.

The advantage is that most of the time you will be operating with fewer system privileges. It makes the extremely rare event of something getting into your machine even more unlikely. And if it somehow got in it could do less damage.

Installed on a 2002 QuickSilver G4-733: Separate OS 10.2.8 and 10.3.7 hard drives.

Panther drive's Safari 1.2.4 (v125.12) seems okay, so far. I'm not sure if that revision number changed with the update.

A Happy Thought::*

IF YOU THINK YOU'RE DUMB ABOUT COMPUTERS, READ THIS, YOU'LL FEEL BETTER.

Take heart, anyone among you who believes he or she is technologically challenged, you "ain't seen nuthin" yet. This is an excerpt from a Wall Street Journal article:*

1. Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is.

2. AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in.

3. Another Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to fax anything. After 40 minutes of troubleshooting, the technician discovered the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor screen and hitting the "Send" key.

4. Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his bathtub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually.

5. A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because his computer had told him he was "Bad and an invalid." The tech explained that the computer's "bad command" and "invalid" responses shouldn't be taken personally.

6. A confused caller to IBM was having trouble printing documents. He told the technician that the computer had said it "couldn't find printer." The user had also tried turning the computer screen to face the printer-but that his computer still couldn't "see" the printer.

7. An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happened." The "foot pedal" turned out to be the computer's mouse...

8. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand new computer wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked, "What power switch?"

9. Another IBM customer had trouble installing software and rang for support. "I put in the first disk, and that was OK. It said to put in the second disk, and had some problems with the disk. When it said to put in the third disk, I couldn't even fit it in..." The user hadn't realized that "Insert Disk 2" implied removing Disk 1 first.

10. A story from a Novell NetWare SysOp:

CALLER: "Hello, is this Tech Support?"

TECH: "Yes, it is. How may I help you?"

CALLER: "The cup holder on my PC is broken -and I am within my warranty period. How do I go about getting that fixed?"

TECH: "I'm sorry, but did you say a cup holder?"

CALLER: "Yes, it's attached to the front of my computer."

TECH: "Please excuse me. If I seem a bit stumped, it's because I am. Did you receive this as part of a promotional at a trade show? How did you get this cup holder? Does it have any trademark on it?"

CALLER: "It came with my computer. I don't know anything about a promotional. It just has '4X' on it."

At this point, the Tech Rep had to mute the caller because he couldn't stand it. He was laughing too hard. The caller had been using the load drawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup holder and it had snapped it off the drive.

11. A woman called the Canon help desk with a problem with her printer. The tech asked her if she was "running it under windows." The woman responded, "No, my desk is next to the door. But that is a good point. The man sitting in the cubicle next to me is under a window and his printer is working fine."

12. And last but not least:

TECH SUPPORT: "O.K. Bob, let's press the control and escape keys at the same time. That brings up a task list in the middle of the screen. Now type the letter "P" to bring up the Program Manager."

CUSTOMER: "I don't have a 'P'".

TECH SUPPORT: "On your keyboard, Bob."

CUSTOMER: "What do you mean?"

TECH SUPPORT: " 'P' on your keyboard, Bob."

CUSTOMER: "I'm not going to do that!

:)
that makes me want to cry. :(

A lot of this stuff sounds like urban legend, but you never know...

This isn't quite as stupid as it sounds. Giving a keyboard a nice scrubbing with soap and water will do wonders to clean off all the disgusting crud that gets on the keys after awhile. It was probably a bad idea to leave it soaking all day, and also a bad idea to take all the keys off. But I've done the scrub thing before with excellent results. Just wash it with soap and water like you'd wash any dishes by hand, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to dry for at least a week.

I'm not joking! (but I claim no responsibility if your keyboard doesn't react well to this treatment - I've done it 4 or 5 times and never had a problem, YMMV)

Installed this the other day with no problem. As a general rule I always repair permissions and do a restart before running any update. Might as well clear out any possible errors before running the update.

I think that you are very wise. Not doing a repair permission can cause a lot of problems. It's also smart to disconnect an external hard drive prior to the update.

MIDI was hosed by this update

There was a previous post about this Security update breaking MIDI in Logic. I think, actually, this update corrupts something that breaks ALL core MIDI. I have a bunch of programs I use (Reason, Live, GB2, MidiKeys, Sibelius, etc.) and MIDI is gone.

There are a few posts on Apple's discussion boards (search MIDI on the Security Update section).

Basically, they also recommended reinstalling the 10.3.7 combo update.

What I've not read is whether or not this action wipes the security update or simply repairs MIDI, leaving the security update in place. Any idea?

By the end of January Microsoft would have to change the scheme cos the number would be too high to display on a monitor with the highest possible resolution.

This is why Microsoft finally implemented the vertical and horizontal scrolling... :)

I like this one. I am wondering where most of these callers live, but I can probably make a good guess.

So... I'm thinking the general consensus is NOT to update? ;)
I've updated with no problems. My iDisk decided to act up today, 2 days after I installed the security update...no idea why...turning on local iDisk fixed it.

Well, they are displayed based on keywords found in a thread. What did you expect, feminine hygiene products?

Thank you very much

That was what i tought, don't think that mac will have such big virus problems a windows has becasue of their OS and don't think that so many people will swithc even with the mac mini (the once who buy the mini will often have two computers)

I have one and am not having those problems after the update. However, I have had that happen a couple of times before. It has either been due to heavy Wi-Fi interference (like transferring a large file over wireless) or low batteries.

Yep, was the freakin batteries again. I find that this macmice mouse bt sucks battery juice like a 5 year old sucks a slurpy from 711! :p

Better Safari text?

Macrumors said:
Apple has posted Security Update 2005-001 for Mac OS X in Software Update:

Apple appears to have started using a numbering scheme for their security updates, rather than relying on date of release as they have done in the past.

Is it just me or does text look a lot better in Safari with this upgrade?

Repair permissions?

I have repaired permissions before updates, after updates, and just for the heck of it. I have NEVER seen a problem actually be found--not since Panther. Before Panther, yes (although the things it found never were a problem as far as I could tell). But with Panther, never.

Is manually repairing permissions no longer needed? That's what I've heard, and my experience makes me think so.

The Update kills 10.2.8 apps ForceQuit x4

This security update apparently kills midi services for Logic Pro 7 and Logic Platinum 6.3. For Pro 7, reinstalling the combo 10.3.7 update seems to fix the problem. :(

The update:
1. Envision is slower
2. some file rename tools like "Renamer4Mac version 2.5.1 (v2.5.1)"
hang for no reason now... will check devlper

But Safari still does the "cannot locate server" thing, a 2nd whack and it finds its way.

Still recording on 10.3. with the iMic, using ibook

Oh no .. I guess I will live.

I once dumped a whole Coke on my old iMac's keyboard. It got sticky QUICK! I took it out and blew it out with compressed air. Having nothing to lose, I drenched it in WD-40 and blew it out again with compressed air - plugged it back in and has been working for 3 years and still going strong! Apple makes hearty stuff.

Other than that episode, I have never dumped anything on any part of a computer.

There has to be some reason why so many members are having problems. My wife just updated her PowerBook today, she did a Repair Permissions with no problems.

bluetooth doesn't work

I installed it and now my bluetooth doesn't work. I have an apple wireless keyboard and it doesn't connect anymore. I have a sony ericsson T616 and it doesn't connect anymore. Has anyone had problems with bluetooth? It was working fine before. maybe its the internal bluetooth module. I have a pb 12" 1.33 combo. If anyone has had the same problem or knows how to fix it, please help! I have applecare but I don't want to be without my computer. Hmm, maybe they can't fix it so I'll get a new one. I can hope can't I? :) Please help......
