So I was adding a time capsule to my network last night and I inactivated my Ethernet port. (I'm not getting into the whys, not important)

When I rebooted my retina iMac, I had no Ethernet.

System profiler said no PCI Ethernet installed.

Thought it was a fluke, so I booted via Internet recovery and I was getting an Ethernet interface there.

So I just reinstalled 10.11 and called it a night.

Working fine now. (As an aside, all your data will still be there, you just have to do the 10.11 to 10.11.3 updates.)

Interesting.

I also did OSX internet recovery, and everything works again now.
Just Power off mac, power on and hold command R, choose reinstall osx. (i made sure that on the right side the wifi is turned off). Apple will ask for your account name / password, wifi turned off so if this works your ethernet works again. Takes about 30mins / pending on your connection. Basically took me like 30 mins and everything is back to normal again.
Tks for the tip

Brought my system back home and I can confirm all is functioning as expected after the OS reinstall. Same as others have reported, this addresses the issue.

edit to add: a couple interesting side benefits to that reinstall, I had been seeing the guest account (which I always disable) showing up at the login screen and it is now properly hidden. I also noticed that my problem with the USB wired keyboard not allowing text entry into the password field at login (I keep a magic keyboard sitting around just for logins) is no longer an issue. Seems to have cleared out a couple other of my bugs while it was at it. Neat

edit two: seems iTunes doesn't want to synch my iPads or iPhone anymore. It hangs in the "Waiting for Changes to be Applied" stage now. Maybe that's coincidence but something I'll have to look into.

Had this issue on my Mac Mini this morning and deleting the file (/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist) and rebooting fixed it for me.

What does it mean if you don't have any version of "incompatible kernel extension configuration data" installed?

I love how you generalize everyone who uses Ethernet as delusional. The AC spec is faster than Gigabit Ethernet, but have you considered wireless signal attenuation at all?

And if anyone is running a VSL/VEP5 metaframe slave over WiFi, I'd love to hear about it.

Wifi works, but App Store fails to 'validate my Mac'.

My wife's MBP did this as well after the ethernet became disabled because of the upgrade. I deleted the ethernet adapter form the network properties, and was able to authenticate with my wifi connection

Do people still use ethernet in 2016??
Yes. My AirPort Extreme puts the Internet in an ethernet jack in every room in my house, and from there to Apple TVs and my office Mac Mini. In 2016 (and 2017 and 2018 and 2019, etc.) Cat 5 or Cat 6 physical cable is superior to the vagaries of wireless radio. There's WiFi for smartphones and laptops, but cables are more reliable. Full stop.
Yeah, I think these people are all delusional. In the real world, ethernet is obsolete. It's even slower than AC wifi spec
Sad how some people demonstrate the belief that because one has ten fingers, two eyes, and one brain that one should type more than one should read and read more than one should think.

It means that you have been affected by this error and should follow the instructions on how to fix it.

Btw, I'm not mad at Apple. It was a mistake that shouldn't have happened but there was a solution within hours. What bothers me is Apple's solution page has not a whisper of a "we're sorry for the inconvenience." Even robots on a call tree offer you that. It's hubris and one of my problems with a company that gets too big for its britches.

This thread is amusing.

Ethernet runs the entire world. As you comfortably use your AC wifi from your couch with a coffee at your side typing about how ethernet is obsolete, your connection is routed through a crapload of ethernet cables through various routers, switches, load balancers, and servers. It's simple, fast, reliable, and more secure than wifi. Anybody who has done any networking more serious than a 2-3 device network in a single home/apartment with a consumer router knows the value of ethernet.

Through my own procrastination it seems that Apple has done the work for me and pushed the fix to my computer a few minutes ago.

Granted I hadn't restarted while I did have the problem file on my 2012 Mini but I do appreciate that between replacing sway bar end links on the car and fixing the dishwasher this is now one less thing I have to worry about today.

That's a Mac problem, not an Ethernet problem. My servers connect at 10Gb and their switches uplink at 40Gb. Besides, what about the performance drop off after about 5 feet, the added latency, and the ability to eavesdrop? If your Mac sits on a desk in the same room as the Airport (or whatever), why not just plug in?
