No chance i'm returning mine, this screen is a MASSIVE improvement over the previous generations, deep blacks match oled and the extra contrast is very noticeable. 😋👌

I am expecting some blooming when mine arrives but I hope it won't be too crazy.
My SONY tv has blooming effect and in all honesty, I something feel that it would be better to not have local dimming at all. As having uniform screen is less distracting than having those random patches that show up during a movie.
So in a way, the 2020 looks better because its uniformed and therefore less distracting than the 2021, however, I will see when I get mine and will make a call then.
If there is a tiny blooming than I won't care as ones eyes will create a 'blooming' effect anyway but if its too much then I guess I might have to think hard what to do.

Excited nevertheless. Just little worried about the weight and battery life (read somewhere that it could be annoying)
I had local dimming on a Samsung TV, it totally sucked! But that was primarily because it had so few zones. Has anyone else noticed all the BloomerBoys pretty much set the thing up to bloom, almost like it is a scripted attack (that's Never happened before LOL)? I mean seriously lets take the most contrasty image imaginable, and turn up the screen allllllllll theeeeeee Wayyyyyyyy!. Yah, I bet it does have some bloom. I can't even see the Samsung TV when the brightness and contrast are all the way up. Terrible TVs!

I watched Army of the Dead last night on Netflix (100% do NOT recommend watching it, terrible) using my M1 12.9" iPad Pro. One thing I noticed is no matter how high I turned the brightness up, the movie did not get brighter. However, when I went back to the Home Screen I was blinded, lol.

Were you watching in HDR?

Some stuff is presented in HDR mode but isn't really HDR, which leads to a dark picture.

I don’t think it will with HDR. The brightness is controlled by the HDR metadata in the video stream. I don’t think you can control that.

update: maybe I got a dud with extra wide dim borders, and the gap is likely an optical illusion due to the overly thick dimmed border.

Original comment:
I have no idea why others aren’t talking about this but my biggest issues, and reason for returning it, was the dimming on the edge of the screen and the larger gap between the glass and the display itself. Both are very noticeable and make using the Apple Pencil nowhere near as nice as it was on the 2018/2020 iPad pros. Honestly I’d rather keep the old display tech but have the M1 and the amazing new speakers. Hopefully they fix these issues in 2022 but I won’t hold my breath since it seems to be a limitation of mini leds and it apparently doesn’t bother anyone?

As for the bloom, it doesn’t bother me (and I’m obviously picky) and I totally prefer ultra deep blacks with some bloom vs the grayish blacks and no bloom on the older pros. I have no idea how they could possibly get rid of the bloom given that’s what lights do to nearby areas without light.

Hi guys, has anybody seen the new m1 ipad pro 12.9 and was disappointed? I saw this video and I just went to the apple store with my wife to buy the new ipad pro today for her, and I was trying to convince her that the new xdr display will be much better, and it's not going to be worth getting the 11 inch ipad pro this year. I was testing the screen quite a bit with hdr content on youtube and the black on the new ipad is quite good, and with it next to the normal 11 inch pro the 11 inch looks a tad greyish. But seriously that's it for me. I don't feel like the screen in much brighter, the colors more vibrant, nothing. Maybe for the professional photographer or the HDR content video creator this will come in handy for color reference. But I went in there thinking we were going to buy the new xdr screen 12.9 ipad pro for the wifey, but seriously could not justify the extra 300 dollars for the it. I also had to seriously think about just advising her to get the air, but as someone who has the m1 macbook air and very pleased with it, I thought the $150 difference for the chip upgrade was worth it for futureproofing. She was also excited to use centerstage, but we were ultimately disappointed when we found out it's only for video calling? I asked the apple store employee to showcase the xdr display, and he just played a dimming test video on youtube on both of them. I was like it's more black that's it....in the end we just walked out with the 11 inch pro...

The blooming dale issue is what's making me ok if the new MBP doesn't get released with Mini LED @ WDCC.

Ha same, I've been waiting FOREVER for a new machine. Will probably buy a 16" now in 2021, and then maybe in 2-3 years see if Apple cleans up the screen technology a bit more. Also maybe watch for wi-fi 6e/6ghz/etc.

I find the current 2019 MBP 16" screen to be excellent though.

There is no gap between the glass and the screen. It’s laminated. It’s an optical illusion from the shadow around the edges. It’s a feature of the Mini-LED technology. Already over it.

I think you both did the best thing: went in person, checked them out, weighed your options, and ultimately made the right decisions for you and your needs.

There's a lot of LOUD VOICES all the time in so many places but ultimately, trust your guts and pick what works best for you and your wife.

Congrats on your new purchase!

Can't wait for an 11" XDR. Hopefully next year they can get one out. Don't mind if it is a big heavier, but larger one is a bit too large for me.
