Sure if you are playing games and watching movies on it, no biggie. But practical, creative production tasks, I can see this being very annoying.
You’re spot on. I use mine to proof and quickly edit photos and the blooming on the unit I played with at the Apple store on Friday was a deal breaker for me. I’m going to hang onto my 2018 until Apple finally bites the OLED bullet I think.

I don’t use my 12.9” iPad Pro to watch much video. The screen quality is excellent but the big black borders at the top and bottom of the screen are annoying and cut the picture size dramatically. Unless they make a 16:9 iPad there isn’t much they can do about it.

Eyes create their own blooming. Any white on dark background will have visual bloom, even on an OLED screen because that’s the nature of one’s eyes, even if there really isn’t any. Even lightbulbs have bloom. Some will see more than others. I have one of the new 12.9” screens and it’s quite nice. I do appreciate the high contrast and the screen is really, really bright. Until we get micro-LED, blooming will always be an issue for some people on non-OLED screens. But OLED has its own issues, like lack of brightness, potential burn-in (that’s why OLED screens often have brightness limiters), and migraines for some. People will always see things differently so it’s good to have a variety of screen types. Buy the type that works best for you.

Forget the blooming display!!!!! I own one, it’s amazing…will some rich youtuber just hurry up and bend it so I know how durable it is!!!!!

😂
I’m sure that bald peanut, chrome dome, anti apple hater jerry rig everything, wil bend one for you soon 😊

If you had a small tablet the same dimensions as the 16:9 portion on the 12.9, would you watch video on that one?

That’s the same significant difference between OLED and LCD..yet I’ve seen some people here claiming they can’t see the difference between liquid retina (fancy name for LCD) and OLED 😁

Right there with you. I picked up an 11” M1 on Friday and it’s going back today because honestly it is no better at running my editing and Lightroom apps than the 2018 it was meant to replace. I got caught up in the excitement of Apple maybe finally bringing MacOS to the Pro line but too many articles over the weekend have painted that as nothing but a pipedream as Apple is too worried about iPads cannibalizing MacBook sales.
The 12.9 has no appeal for me either as like you I have a 13” M1 MBA back at the hotel so eh.
Yeah I nearly bought a Magic Keyboard for my iPad.

But I realised that I LIKE having a light, handheld tablet.

I don't want or need to turn it into another Macbook - I already own one!

I don't think the iPad - or any product line from any company in fact, but it's especially true for the iPad - is meant for you to upgrade every year.

I think you will admit that the latest iPad though, IS an improvement over yours, even if far from being a necessary upgrade.
I got the new iPad Pro 11".

I just decided that getting mini-LED wasn't worth losing the ability to keep my tablet in a small camera bag.

The attack on the XDR display's apparent blooming seems to be a coordinated one. If you look at an OLED iPhone's boot screen in the complete darkness, your EYES will see blooming around the Apple logo. Everything about this has been highly exaggerated.
Lol. I when to the washroom, close the lights and rebooted my iphone, just to see. Yes, the blooming is there but way less compared to the iPad’s. But unless i need to work in a darkroom or in the closet with the lights out, the blooming on the iPad is … OK. Do hope Apple can reduce it via software.

I bought the 11” iPad Pro this time, and I am also jealous that it doesn’t have the new display. I tried the 12.9” size before and it just wasn’t a fit for me personally holding it as tablet or for easy travel. And that’s ok. Let’s let the 12.9” buyers enjoy their new toy. :)
Yeah, Marques Brownless said the exact same thing - 'Cool, but I'll stick with 11 inches'.

Same here, but I’m really really really liking the white magic keyboard 🥺😂

It looks great - but I think it'll age badly!

I travel a lot and use my gear heavily, so a white finish would be a bit of a liability for me.

I just realised my trusty Logitech K380 can squeeze into my sling bag too - so that's perfect if I want to write.

Okay so stupid question: do you get better battery life when using dark mode? Or does that still only apply to OLED?

Yes I would. The iPad makes a great little TV on my desk. The picture quality is really good. Maybe they could make it in the same 16:10 screen size on the MacBook.

That's just your fantasy. OLED does not use (need) local dimming so it does not have a blooming associated with local dimming. There might be some other optical effect and/or eye perception issue but it's a totally different thing (if it exists). I have never seen people discussing "blooming" for OLED displays but it's a thing for LCD displays with local dimming.
