Hi guys, has anybody seen the new m1 ipad pro 12.9 and was disappointed? I saw this video and I just went to the apple store with my wife to buy the new ipad pro today for her, and I was trying to convince her that the new xdr display will be much better, and it's not going to be worth getting the 11 inch ipad pro this year. I was testing the screen quite a bit with hdr content on youtube and the black on the new ipad is quite good, and with it next to the normal 11 inch pro the 11 inch looks a tad greyish. But seriously that's it for me. I don't feel like the screen in much brighter, the colors more vibrant, nothing. Maybe for the professional photographer or the HDR content video creator this will come in handy for color reference. But I went in there thinking we were going to buy the new xdr screen 12.9 ipad pro for the wifey, but seriously could not justify the extra 300 dollars for the it. I also had to seriously think about just advising her to get the air, but as someone who has the m1 macbook air and very pleased with it, I thought the $150 difference for the chip upgrade was worth it for futureproofing. She was also excited to use centerstage, but we were ultimately disappointed when we found out it's only for video calling? I asked the apple store employee to showcase the xdr display, and he just played a dimming test video on youtube on both of them. I was like it's more black that's it....in the end we just walked out with the 11 inch pro...
I haven't done this for the iPad pro with mini-LED yet, but did it a while back to compare the OLED screens in the iPhone 11 vs. the non-OLED screens on the iPhone 8/XR at the time.

I tried pulling up lots of dark photos but couldn't see almost any difference at all on them, particularly on a 5" screen or whatever.

On a laptop 14-16" screen I could see it being more of a difference, but as mentioned before I think the current 16" screens are already excellent.

While I do appreciate this article, it seems rather difficult to judge a device’s screen in pictures or video. It’s kind of like watching a PlayStation event on YouTube where they’re showing off a new game - It’s going to look underwhelming in a compressed stream that’s not in 4K HDR. Will be much better in person. I imagine the same thing is happening here, where you really need to see these in person.

I myself went for the 11” size because it just works better for me. Next year if the 11” do get this screen, it will be a dilemma for myself. But the screen sounds really nice. If you’re on the fence and can safely see them in person, that will be the best thing to do.

Can't wait for an 11" XDR. Hopefully next year they can get one out. Don't mind if it is a big heavier, but larger one is a bit too large for me.
I tried both the 11” and 12.9” (last years models) for two weeks. In the end, I went with the smaller one for my uses. Tough choice, but like you, just a bit too large for me. But I can’t help but wonder if 12” would have been the perfect compromise for people thinking like us

My iPad Pro 11" fits into my Peak Design 6 litre sling bag, along with my camera and five lenses.

I already have a 13" M1-powered Apple device that requires a backpack - it's called a 'Macbook'.
I don't think the iPad - or any product line from any company in fact, but it's especially true for the iPad - is meant for you to upgrade every year.

I think you will admit that the latest iPad though, IS an improvement over yours, even if far from being a necessary upgrade.

Is it me but when at 1:10 the 2 iPads are compared, the M1 model is overall darker but you see a lot of blooming while the old model is kinda uniform grey everywhere, not sure I prefer the newer model as the contrast is much more noticeable.

I'm not seeing any blooming, but then I'm not jacking up the brightness and looking for specific scenarios that highlight the issue, just so I can say how bad it is that Apple chose miniLED instead of OLED, but I realize that other people’s mmv.

I do notice the faint edge shadowing, but my gosh, who is actually spending time looking the edge of the screen as if that was how you worked on the device? It's not effecting any of my current workflows, nor is it degrading my reading or video-watching experience. I find the screen to be fantastic in overall use, especially when viewing photos and videos shot in HDR.

I am expecting some blooming when mine arrives but I hope it won't be too crazy.
My SONY tv has blooming effect and in all honesty, I something feel that it would be better to not have local dimming at all. As having uniform screen is less distracting than having those random patches that show up during a movie.
So in a way, the 2020 looks better because its uniformed and therefore less distracting than the 2021, however, I will see when I get mine and will make a call then.
If there is a tiny blooming than I won't care as ones eyes will create a 'blooming' effect anyway but if its too much then I guess I might have to think hard what to do.

Excited nevertheless. Just little worried about the weight and battery life (read somewhere that it could be annoying)
Nothing to worry about, the display is amazing, don’t listen to people who don’t own one or have seen them in person, most of these people believe everything they see on reddit and Twitter lol, just like these fake, over exposed, blown out pictures and videos being posted online.

You're going to love it.

Looks great! Definitely looking forward to upgrading from my 2018 11 iPP.. once iPadOS matures to any sort of higher level to actually take advantage of the M1.

As of today even my ageing A12X is overkill for iPadOS. The ball is in Apples court now.

Well, I'm a visual person (job deformation) so I know that I will see it. I just wonder how much of that will actually be visible. With little bloom I'm ok with as in normal situations you won't really see it. Thats actually what I think it will be.

Could be wrong though but yeah, 2-3 weeks left to see :)

Has anyone else noticed all the BloomerBoys pretty much set the thing up to bloom,
yep, they are taking terrible photos without adjusting their camera exposure properly, even their videos are trash lol, the max tech blooming YouTube video caught them out for the liars they are lol.

That "bloom" effect looks absolutely terrible on video. It's particularly awful how it isn't even a neutral color, so that those red flames in the video looked like they have a royal blue glow around them. I have yet to see one in person, but I can't imagine that it's less distracting than even the most hideous gray blacks. I don't think it really counts as higher contrast when the pixels next to each other are actually contrasting LESS than with the old display. It just counts as a non-uniform, smudgy mess - a costly cheat and a gimmick.

I guess I'm lucky I'm not due for an iPad upgrade this time.

Right there with you. I picked up an 11” M1 on Friday and it’s going back today because honestly it is no better at running my editing and Lightroom apps than the 2018 it was meant to replace. I got caught up in the excitement of Apple maybe finally bringing MacOS to the Pro line but too many articles over the weekend have painted that as nothing but a pipedream as Apple is too worried about iPads cannibalizing MacBook sales.
The 12.9 has no appeal for me either as like you I have a 13” M1 MBA back at the hotel so eh.

Got my 2020 12.9 last year in August. Best device I ever had and I had many. Too many. Then came the M1 Macbook Air for xmas. Blows you away. Now, the iPad is not out by any means but I do use the laptop more and more, the iPad functions at home as a second screen via sidecar and that setup works great. Can´t imagine a better screen on either decice so there is no way I spend over $1000 because of a better screen? Movies or HDR content might be better on that new iPad but I think, a few years have to pass before any upgrade is even considered. And HDR content is in this house watched on a big screen, not on a handheld device.

Had to mention five lenses…. 🙄
Pretty sure they were bragging about that Peak Design sling (I own the 5L version, it’s boss) and not anything else. Assuming they make a living with that kit, I’m not surprised they carry that much glass with them. I’m also assuming you don’t know any professional photographers?
