Anyone thinking this is a one off and not a serious problem for our security should look at the statement from the New York Attorney General. He said he has 175 iPhones that he needs to access and will surely try to piggy back on anything done here. Just imagine how many other states are in the same position.

Hopefully Apple will not cave.

Yep, this. Once Apple does this once, it will be a swift descent into endless demands by the government to do it regularly. And you can bet they will push legislation which will require Apple to put a backdoor into the Secure Enclave.

How crap is it that this is the first thought?

This, THIS is how borked US politics are.
Thats what politicians respond to. I can't vote in NC. I can however monetarily support people I agree with on issues I feel strongly about. If politicians can't get out of the primary, they'll start making good decisions.

The reason the NRA has been so successful blocking background checks for gun purchases is they can get voters to vote on a single issue. Tech companies and the tech community need to start asserting themselves more aggressively. A few wins in places and you will have Senators and Congressman who would sooner burn themselves at the stake than to weaken device encryption.

He's a Republican, in case anyone asked. Imagine if he were a Democrat saying the same thing...

But why do people complain? Corporate personhood: corporations are people too.

"You are either with us or with the terrorists" - George W Bush, days after 9/11, though it's a given most of us would be patriotic and side against the terrorists without his needing to say it.

If an individual person did this, guess what would happen? Why should corporate persons be given special treatment? Or more, given all the corporate welfare, lobbying, and other things that Apple isn't going to announce as freely as this nice song and dance about standing up to big butch bad government...
[doublepost=1455893871][/doublepost]And is this the same Burr that voted NO on a bill in 2005 that would have halted corporate welfare going to companies that offshored jobs? Republicans hate welfare and say the free market never benefits from government involvement, right?

http://www.ontheissues.org/SenateVote/Party_2005-63.htm

And how we spend more on corporate welfare since graphs first reported in 2006:

OMG, how did anyone get convicted before there were phones to scrape data from? If the difference between convicting someone and not convicting them requires data from their phone, then it sounds to me like a pretty weak case that has the high potential for being wrong. Unless criminals are taking selfies of their crimes in progress.

What happened to fingerprints and witnesses and all the other stuff? Sounds like to me that we have a bunch of lazy prosecutors who want Apple to do their job for them.

This is all a smoke screen for the fact that they want to spy on the populous and they're using "because crime" to do it.
BINGO.....give this person a cupie doll. Snowden and Assange already proved that.

Yet there is no attempt at rules governing "burner" phones - which are used all the time in crime. I'll bet this Senator is up for re-election and needs something to prove his worth. This isn't one side or the other - we have heard from both sides of the political isle. Because all members of government are owned and paid for by companies the Senator is just another example of paid for government.
Another reason to love Apple.

Even Apple Inc. does not have power over the U.S. Government.

For protection, Apple will have to stop selling iPhones. So... there won't be an iPhone 7.

I always wondered how this iPhone thing would all end.
Majority of sales now outside the US. There will be hordes of Americans lined up at Chinese Apple stores on launch day buying phones to illegally ship back to US for a nice profit.

Most of our lawmakers are geriatrics who when they hear the word "computer" think of refrigerator-size cabinets with a reel-to-reel on the front. The last time a Senator discussed the Internet, it was "a series of tubes." It's depressing to think they are writing telecommunication and privacy laws for all of us.

Thanks for the advice Mr Big Government. I choose privacy.

Apple may be taking a moral stance, but I bet they are terrified to lose sales. Who would buy an iPhone knowing the government can hack it?

There is more to this than Apple wanting to defend your rights.

All the more reason to support Apple. I want to protect my 4th Amendment rights, but as an Apple stockholder I also want to protect my investment. The government is attacking me on two fronts.

I call for legislation requiring all gun owners to be forced under law, to reveal what guns they have, what ammunition where they got the gun. Including name address and where the guns are stored. This information should be stored in a national data base accessible to all government agencies, federal, state and local. With full access and disclosure to all citizens via freedom of information act. This will protect us from a much more serious threat, at least based on deaths. Help authorities protect us from the 10,000 death occurring annually from violent gun acts. Contact your representatives to get this going.

Let's put a dent in the 10,000 gun deaths annually, a much larger number than terrorist related deaths.

If the San Bernadino police had known these two terrorists were amassing a cache of weapons, an investigation and visit might have prevented this tragedy.

Nor did they mention that Burr has been working with Senator Feinstein (D-CA) on similar legislation:

http://www.dailydot.com/politics/fbi-encryption-james-comey-tech-companies/

Or, that Feinstein has already been quoted:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/sen-diane-feinstein-calls-on-apple-to-obey-court-order/

In an interview with PBS NewsHour, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Cal.), Vice Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, called on Apple to comply with the court order, arguing that the information on the phone could prevent additional acts of terrorism. She further stated that if Apple refused to obey the order, it would likely lead to legislation that would force the issue.

Take off your partisan blinders. You might learn something.

Would you be surprised if I told you that Senator Feinstein (D-CA) has already warned Apple this would happen if they didn't comply?

You can write any Senator, but their staff is likely to ignore you if you aren't a constituent.

Of course, they are only slightly less likely to ignore you if you are.
There is not doubt there are stupid people on both sides of the aisle. But way more on the Republican side. Just look at the current crop of GOP presidential candidates. I rest my case.

They are also considering proposing a bill to outlaw whispering.

Completely. What makes people think they'd serve Chinese customers putting them at risk with the same insecure devices?

Do you?

Bernie Sanders refuses to take a side between federal government and Apple fight

Get back to me when Bernie takes a principled stand on the subject instead of uttering wish-washy political pablum.

Ha, you quoted the title of the article, while I quoted something Bernie said in the article.

You prove that you read titles. I prove that I read the articles.

Our nation is surely in trouble this election season if voters are only reading article titles.

Sorry, I don't mean to pick on you specifically. Just read the articles and then form your own opinion. Bernie is not picking a side because he said it is complicated, but he did say in the article that he thinks fighting terrorists is important but not at the expense of our freedoms. He's being intelligent in this situation because he's not trying to be one of those "politicians that know nothing of technology".

Here's the article link you posted again so people reading are informed and can make their own opinions about this. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/feb/18/bernie-sanders-staying-out-apple-fight-government/

People will buy them unless they want to give up on phones for good since every other manufacturer will have the same requirements to let hackers in.
