Lose ODD...

No way. Not on a desktop. I still like my discs...

Buy external drive it's like 10 bucks on eBay problem solve. Don't like that? Buy the current design. People need to stop crying over the odd I'd much rather have something more useful instead. If you don't start moving on from disk well youre gonna be left out because everything is going digital

One argument I could see towards a slimmer iMac is Apple's tendency to gradually evolve their products.

If (when?) they finally introduce an Apple TV set, I expect it to largely resemble the look and feel of whatever the iMac looks like at that time - or at least look close enough that you'd know it was made by Apple (or Samsung). If the evolution of today's iMac is destined to become the future AppleTV I could see slimmer being one of the attributes they introduce now as part of that evolution to both work out any kinks with the design, but also get customers familiar with that aesthetic.

Sensitive...

And I'm not gonna be left in the dust. I'm completely aware of how software is moving digitally, but I personally like a disc drive, for a desktop. That's it. No need to tell me how to get with the program and how to spend my money. Not that serious.

But I understand your emotions, because you vouch for a "sexier" and slimmer iMac. Whatever Apple produces will be nice; hard to imagine how much better the iMac design can get. Bring it on :apple:

I am a few years away from buying a new iMac. I would hate to see the optical drive go away from a desktop. It works for laptops and iPads, but for a desktop I would always need something to read and encode disks.

Yes, technology these days is amazing, I mean with spellcheck and everything. And yeah, people need to stop crying about disc drives, I also want something more useful instead. Like a big digital clock, slots for Playstation memory cards, 20" rims or additional printer ports. Just give me something I can use, disc drives and GPUs are so yesterday, I don't even talk to people anymore, who use words like "DVD" and "Maroon 5". Everything is going digital and I just don't see how digital versatile discs fit anymore.

:eek:are you on LSD or something? :D good stuff

The Mac Mini got way overdue once. The new one was redesigned some but not much. Perhaps the same is true here. Laminated screen and USB 3 seem to be a given. Not much to headline an event. I suspect the optical drive will remain. I hope the laminated screen doesn't make it harder to open it up and update the HDD. I intend to immediately replace it with an SSD. I don't want the Apple tax on that. Screen lamination could easily explain the delay. Plus a desire to push fencesitters into the laptop arena. (The forums have several who gave up waiting for the iMac and got the new MBP. The delay for the iMac probably bumped up MBP sales some.)

Agree! There are many (such as myself) who couldn't wait and either purchased a MBA or rMBP, and this definitely helped Apple drive laptop sales. Funny thing is that those who purchased a laptop already, will still probably pick up an iMac anyway (including myself). God damn Apple making me spend my money!

You don't know what you're talking about it's not going to be next week and it's going to be a new redesign you heard it here first. I can almost put money on that I'll come back to this very thread next week to tell you I told you so.

Well that wouldn't be right now would it?

If the new iMacs don't come out on Tuesday... that would just make my assumption wrong. Not make yours... right.

It doesn't matter when the new iMacs come out... if they come out this year... I'm confident that they will not be redesigned.

You seem a bit... fanatical. How's that working out for ya?

He seems coked out off his mind if you ask me. But you didn't ask me, so let's pretend I never said what I just did, yes?

Unfortunately I have to side with Edry on the ODD situation.

Ditching the Optical Disc Drive is, without a doubt, the future of the computer - desktop, laptop - whatever. The mythical "iCloud" as well as online stores are the future of purchasing digital entertainment, software, apps etc. ODD's can be sold separately for those who REALLY need them. Yeah yeah... it's like $15. If your business depends on it... $15 won't break the bank.

I'll be honest... the argument to keep the ODD is really fragile at this point. I think it makes more sense for Apple to use that room for other components or even less components etc. Apple's online business model is hugely successful and will only continue to explode over the next few years. I absolutely love the convenience and... it's practical. At least for me.

Only my opinion... not trying to argue.
:)

I don't know, and personally I don't care too much as I hardly ever need a disc drive. An external one would suffice for my use, even though I think there are many iMac users who still need a disc drive. I was just amazed by the fanatism of certain people, who don't state their opinions as neutral as you.

By the way, I hope your speculations about the 4th are right, if not I'll come back to this thread next week and post something utterly pointless.

Is apple still holding on to the tuesday release day tradition?...I mean since everyone is only talking about tuesdays as possible day for a refresh. Couldn´t any day the entire week be a day of new imacs ?

Waiting all these extra months just for spec bumps? I don't think so. At least I hope not. They could've just updated them together with the MacBooks.

Not if there were production issues due to a new screen laminating process.

Nobody knows what's a screen laminating process issue is ... I asked many times what the hell does it mean, but nobody has a clue : IMO they could have easily said "we've got generic production issues" and it would just have been quite the same ...

Yes right, because there is no drive buy 2010/ 11 tech :D

You are joking surely?

the same process they do with the new rMBP, reduce glare but keep the positives of a glossy screen

I don't believe that they will remove the ODD at all. Not for quite sometime until cd/dvds etc become really almost useless(maybe thats too much) But yeah I don't see it leaving the iMac at all.

I don't either. Though I don't really care if they do... And I assume about 80% don't really use it anymore. It's kinda cool, the days of physical except for ram/ssd and cloud is about to disappear. I wonder how long until internal storage disappear too?

It's happening, like it or not. looking at incremental update Apple have done such as : dropping the support on idvd(not available in MAS either), digital distribution of OS, internet recovery, recovery disk assistant on usb, all of those things could lead to one thing.

If there is indeed a redesign of the imac 2012, i'm quite certain they will drop the ODD and offer external superdrive. just like they did when they drop FW800 and ethernet on the retina mbp.

based on personal experience, I've never used the ODD on mine for a very long time. except for one time my brother forgot his flashdisk and burn the files on dvd for me :p

I think so. Except in the middle of a weekend/holiday so that people don't return them the next day.
