Serial leaker Jon Prosser has moved to quash sketchy rumors that Apple could release a new iMac as soon as this week.

imacdisplay-1.jpg

Rumors about the imminent launch of an Intel-based iMac with an unchanged design appeared over the weekend, but originated from Twitter accounts with no track record for accurate leaks.

In a tweet responding to a news report on the rumors, Prosser said simply, "Nope," and then followed up with:
Shipping times for current iMac models have been delayed for weeks, which has led many observers to believe an iMac refresh may be on the horizon.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said Apple plans to refresh its existing Intel-based iMac in the third quarter of 2020 prior to launching an iMac with Apple Silicon later this year.

Kuo's report didn't specify if the Intel-based iMac refresh would include a redesign or if it would be saved for the Apple Silicon model.

Reliable leaker CoinX claimed in March that an ‌iMac‌ update was coming "soon," but no further information has been shared since then.

Apple's iMac redesign is rumored to feature "iPad Pro design language" and thinner bezels, similar to those seen on Apple's Pro Display XDR that accompanied the new Mac Pro last year.

Prosser on Sunday also responded to a question on Twitter about whether the new iMac would be powered by Apple Silicon or Intel-based, saying, "The first ARM Mac will likely be a 13.3" MacBook Pro."

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the first Mac to be updated with an Apple Silicon chip will be the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, which should see a refresh with the Apple chip before the end of 2020. DigiTimes has also said that Apple Silicon chips will be coming to the 13-inch MacBook Pro before the end of the year.

I really don't get that 13.3 inch Arm powered MacBook Pro release, followed by a 14.1 inch release in Q2 next year.
Going ARM means a full redesign of the motherboard and probably some changes to the case two. Why would Apple bother doing the work twice, and how are they going to differentiate between 13.3 and 14.1 from next year?
There can only be two logical explanations, either the ARM move doesn't involve that much work or they're planning to replace the current MBP line-up (8th Generation CPU and 10th Generation CPU) by a 13.3 and 14.1 split with or without Mini-led display. The CPU might also get better (maybe 16cores instead of 12) on the 14 incher?

Me. Why? Because I want only one computer, like the iMac's design and its great display and use both Windows (for gaming) and macOS (for everything else). I won't be able to run Windows properly on an ARM iMac, that's why I will spend a large amount on the last and most powerful Intel iMac and use it for many years.

Yup. One computer that can run MacOS, Windows, and Linux flawlessly. Classic beautiful design. Amazing hi-res screen. Can play any game you want (in boot camp).

I think these final gen Intel iMacs will be very popular.

Who would still want a intel iMac?
People whose business requires running x86 VMs and Docker images. Also people who live dangerously by depending on x86-64 Mac software from vendors who are no longer in business. Also developers who need a new or replacement system on which to test their software on x86 systems that a large fraction of Mac users will be using for many years. e.g. Macs purchased in the last couple years have a long life expectancy.

Sad news for those waiting for bigger iMac changes. This must be the most talked about 'spec bump' I've ever seen. All it will do is match the current MacBook Pro 16 inch specs like up to 8TB SSD (with some other differences). Why is it so talked about? Because a lot of people have been hoping for and expecting a design update for a long time. I for one find the current design extremely dated. I desperately need a new high spec iMac and will find it very hard to lay down approx £4k for a machine that looks identical to my last 2 machines. How would you feel if your iPhone still looked like the 2011 (iPhone 4) model? Remember the previous Apple cinema displays? The aluminium ones that were released in 2002....They had thinner bezels than todays iMacs. (and worked better when putting two next to each other.) Also that chin was ugly as hell in 2011, let alone 2020. I Just don't think I can buy this "new" (old) iMac without a design change. And I suspect there are many people who feel the same. However I do agree that some people will still buy it, particularly people who don't know about the silicon change coming and that there is a rumoured design change – so I guess that's what Apple is banking on if this rumour is correct.

For a minority, I think they might be popular for that reason. But the vast majority of people never run Linux or Windows on their Macs.

Will a power cord be included in the box?

Heh...heh...heh...

Or the kb...or the mouse...

I think this iMac has been delayed X times because of Covid, BlackLifesMatter Protests, the ARM Announcement and now possibly this week due to Tim Cooks congress interview being rescheduled... they will be pretty happy to get it out of the door and first and foremost have online and physical stores restocked again after what now is more or less two month of nothing on the 27 inch front.
Besides that i am fairly certain i bought a new MacBook once during Back2School Promotion. Got one of the smaller iPods and gladly sold that for a 100€ bringing my MacBook down to something silly like 900€ (must have been late 2008, the one and only non Pro Aluminum MacBook of that era)

But do you think Apple will delay the iPhone launch for any of those reasons?

That. The iMac had its run. An iPad Pro and an external 6k display will deliver a better performance.

That design certainly has had its day.

Apple updates have been boring for a while, I’m not even excited for the new iPhone now it doesn’t have 120hz why can’t be have a redesign mac now it’s way over due

So bored of the iPhone now. Beautifully evolved.

My phone now spends it's time. Off.

Waiting on the new intel iMac.

But Apple have done nothing serious with it in 12 years.

The uninformed. And they are the ones who will be livid when they find out their brand new machines do not have all the features and performance of the ARM based Macs.

True dat.

I remember when I was one of the great unwashed. Bought in iBook. Only for the new one a month later.

I wasn't happy.

Life means doing your homework to get the best deal.

People expecting a redesign with an Intel chip were out of their minds.

The whole point of moving to ARM was to give Apple total control over every aspect of their computers, including design.

Well. It's marketing.

A sexy new design will make the old Intel iMac seem archaic.

It's win win for Apple.

Goose Intel iMac buyers now.

Pile on the buyer's remorse with sexy new design and 50%-100% better performance.

I don’t get this constant need for redesigns, heck, people are still buying the Porsche 911 and it doesn’t look much different today to how it was when first produced in 1963.

I still think the iMac looks great, sure the bezels could be made smaller and the chin reduced a little bit but I wouldn’t want it to look like a massive iPad.

No redesign? That sucks.
What could they really do? They're still dealing with Intel's desktop power envelope so those chips aren't going into the new Apple Silicon design, and it would be very expensive (= unpopular price rise) to design a one-off just for this year.

Hopefully they will reconfigure the stock SKUs to eliminate spinning hard drives, and maybe bring retina to the entry level 21.5". That would still be a meaningful update.

I might be in the market for this new i9 model as I'm starting to get sudden shutdowns with my Late 2015 27" iMac, I know it's a well known issue with failing power supplies. Have the last few revisions suffered with it do we know or did Apple resolve it ?

If you “desperately” need a new iMac, then what it looks like is a secondary or tertiary consideration, at best. The iMac still looks great, despite being dated. Speeding up workflow and paying the rent/mortgage trumps aesthetics every time. If not, I seriously doubt how truly “desperate” you are. Needs and wants are two entirely different things.

I’m guessing it’s time for a platform change for you then?

Why on earth do people take Prosser seriously?

Becasue people want to know the future. Same question as to why investors believe what analysts say about the future of corporations. Same question as to when change will happen.

Finally, from the old Doobie Brothers hit song...

“What a fool believes, the wise man has the power to reason away. What seems to be is always better than nothing."

Yes, I’m that old.

You make it sound like their machine will just stop working.

The problem is no different than with phones or tablets or computers for the past couple of decades. There may be some buyer remorse, but I doubt anyone outside the tech-reader world will be livid.

And I don’t know what additional features you expect beyond the possibility of it being faster, which I’ve not bought into yet because I’ve heard this stuff before.

Very well said. Good design doesn’t need refreshes all the time. Shrink the bezels and maybe the chin a bit, the rest is good enough for me.

Hmmmm...desperately need a new iMac but if this doesn’t have a solution for better cooling I’d rather have a 2017 iMac Pro.

plus it Would be space gray and at least look a little different from my current iMac I bought 10 years ago.

I think it’s gonna be iMac Pro and end this need for a computer until AS has all the transition bugs worked out.

It may well be the most powerful physical iMac there is ever going to be.

Apple Silicon isn't going to compete at the top end, but Apple is moving towards a virtual hardware streaming service anyway.
You own a dumb terminal, and all the compute happens remotely.

Soon it will be $300 a month to use the Apple environment.

If the rumor is true, the iMac refresh will be very similar to the 2020 iPad Pro refresh. Nothing wrong with an updated iMac with new processor and perhaps a few upgraded things, but when you know there is an update pending with more substantial changes inside and out, it’s hard to justify buying what is effectively an interim device.

I get that for most people who are not following Apple rumors, or even have any idea of what the shift to Apple Silicon is going to mean in the near future, getting a new [old] iMac when they are announced will seem perfectly normal.

If that were true, that Apple was moving towards a cloud processing driven future, there would be far less reason for them to shift to ARM in desktops and laptops (other than for saving money). I would say that given the strength of their chip designs, where even the A13 in the current iPhones have performance that rivals many Intel laptop chips and their years old chips were already outperforming Intel, that the future for Apple Silicon is going to be scalable devices where even the lowest level versions of MacBooks or iMacs will offer better performance than anything Apple could have done with Intel or AMD for that matter. And for those that need more power, Apple will far more easily be able to address this end of the market, not having to wait for Intel to deliver their over promised, under delivered solutions.

Why bother with this one. Like buying a a new acr at full price just before the new design is released. kind of a short shelf life and poor resale value, no? I guess maybe 27" AS is going to be a longer wait that people thought.
