If the 27" model comes with that leaked and 5300 gpu, it will suck. Also, that 95w slimmed down version of i9-10900k indicates that crappy cooling solution will remain same as pathetic.

Yes. I regret getting my 2019 i9 iMac instead of the iMac Pro. Benchmarks showed the i9 iMac was better but the cooling is so ridiculously bad its pathetic.

Who would still want a intel iMac?

Can you guarantee all of my software will have Apple Silicon versions day 1? What about running Windows? Bootcamp will no longer work.

People expecting a redesign with an Intel chip were out of their minds.

The whole point of moving to ARM was to give Apple total control over every aspect of their computers, including design.

There is nothing to redesign. Just use the iMac Pro design that was released in 2017. Just have better cooling as the current i9 system is horrible.

Who would still want a intel iMac?
Me. My iMac has been dead since November. My phone has been my computer since then, which is ridiculous. An Apple Silicon computer would be nice, but since all signs are pointing to a 2021 release for an Apple Silicon iMac that’s at least 27”, I can’t wait that long. As others have said, by the time the new iMac’s AppleCare runs out, Apple Silicon will have options that don’t require me to downgrade my screen size. Plus I’ll know whether I’m buying a gaming PC (for Blizzard’s non-Mac offerings mostly), or if Apple will have a new PC emulation option.

Who would still want a intel iMac?
People who want BootCamp, for starters. The last intel Mac will be the most modern intel version after Apple migraines away.

That. The iMac had its run. An iPad Pro and an external 6k display will deliver a better performance.
Doesn't the iPad just mirror itself, same proportions and everything?

Does no one else think that one more Intel iteration is a bad sign for Apple silicon?

This is a consumer machine, not the Mac Pro. If Apple silicon were really ready, why not put it in this iMac? Why the wait?

Because there are processors available for an update to these systems. Do you expect Apple to not update the high end computers for 2 years? The transition is stated for 2 years. Intel has 10th gen processors now. These need to be updated.

Transitioning the higher end models to AS and Rosetta 2 and all the likely apps higher end models run, as well as ramping up the highest binned mac worthy AS parts, including the other new redesigned parts on multiple models, is no small challenge. It will take time, a huge investment and has potential pitfalls. A slow roll out makes sense on so many levels.

It was done on the iMac before where the new Intel Mac adopted the package design of the white plastic G5 iMac that came before it.

Dammit. I was about to pull the trigger on a fully-loaded 16” MBP with the 5600m and then this news. I guess I can wait a few weeks to see/compare, but it’s complicating how I should spend my $4700 considerably.

crappy cooling is same or worse than the 2015 model? And why is the 5300 bad? For games and video work? I do audio.

Well if you need the portability factor the MacBook Pro 16 is a wonder model. I have had mine for 9 months and it has been working great. Mine runs cool, love the new keyboard. Works with my 43 LG 4k monitor. Works with my Razer EGPU box with a older Vega 64 card. And in a couple months a upgrade to the new AMD Big Navi card with 16gb of video ram. If you go with the MacBook Pro remember to get the SSD storage you might need and the ram you might need.

Well...a few weeks ago we debated whether the redesign would include Apple silicon or Intel...
Now we know it is Intel (like I suspected)....
But what we didn’t think was that there wouldn’t be a redesign...
So ARM iMac is the redesign...but not till next year?...

Well their could be a little redesign like they did MacBook Pro 16. They could change the fans for better cooling. We will have to see for the new iMac.

Prosser's record is pretty good. Like Kuo, just over 75% of his predictions have been accurate (though, to be fair, several of Prosser's and Kuo's predictions/leaks are about things in the future, so we won't know whether their accuracy rate holds for quite a while).

dont look at the percentage, look at the big guesses he made.

it’s not too hard guessing obvious moves for apple which would increase his percentage.

There really doesn't need to be any redesign. Just use the iMac Pro's design from 2017 with an interior design change only. Doesn't have to be Space Grey either.

It sounds like new iMac might be built around a very different thermal envelope, which could mean an iPad-like thinness (and likely some kind of step down in performance for general use).

The iMac designed is a relic from the past, it needs a revolutionary design just like original imac to LCD iMac. Maybe its time to retire the iMac name maybe call it sMac for Apple Silicon. They are moving away from the "i" prefix any way.

Apple sticking with old design makes you wonder, even the new Mac Pro made to look like the 2003 Power Mac G5. Tim Cook is probably lost because Jobs have not left any directions on what to do after the design become a couple decades old.

Ya. I had an iMac Pro I dumped when Mac Pro was finally released. I didn't dislike it, it's like a high-end iMac where the cooling works correctly. I mean, that's it basically... iMac Pro is just an iMac that actually works and can sustain promoted specs -- as opposed to hit them with fans going at warp speed and then throttle downwards shortly thereafter.

The most urgent change iMac requires is slapping a T2 chip in there, to help enable Apple's artificial cut-off for no longer supported systems. No T2? buh-bye a few OS revisions sooner. I strongly suspect this should've been released sooner, but got delayed due to world falling apart and civilization being semi-cancelled for intermittent periods of time.

Redesigned Macs will all have Apple Silicon. There will be no redesigns for Intel Macs. Why?

Thermals, for one thing. A-series processors can do more in less space, with passive cooling. No point in redesigning Intel Macs, as they are facing extinction in less than 2 years (new Intel Mac models, that is).

Another reason: Apple wants to make Apple Silicon Macs stand out. All design efforts are on Apple Silicon and the designs it enables.

meh. Didn't they just release one last year (2019) ?
Seems pointless to have a newer one without any significant changes. Give us Face ID, smaller bezels, Touch ID wireless keyboard . If it had apple silicone than sure, but right now it seems like a bad idea to upgrade unless you have to

Me. Why? Because I want only one computer, like the iMac's design and its great display and use both Windows (for gaming) and macOS (for everything else). I won't be able to run Windows properly on an ARM iMac, that's why I will spend a large amount on the last and most powerful Intel iMac and use it for many years.

Similar, I'm a little more skeptical of the ARM transition, and enjoy Intel-based chips for the flexibility with bootcamp. I devote about 15% of my computing time to gaming, and appreciate that option.
