OK, I have my Apple Watch Series 4 SBSS 44 mm now.
No thanks to my order a week ago, which put my delivery out to October 12-19th. I checked the Apple Store app on my iPhone and found the model I wanted was available at one of three Apple Stores in my areas (Orlando).
I tried to call the Apple Store with inventory to make sure I could transfer my order from delivery to pickup. Doesn't seem to be possible. I spent time on the phone that seemed like an eternity before someone actually answered (more like 15 minutes).
Meanwhile, I was already driving there because I live a county north of the store. The person who answered told me I could have to cancel my existing order and then make a new to pick one up in the store.
Then he transferred me to someone at Apple Corporate, who didn't know how many units were in stock at the Apple Store for the unit I wanted.
Both people were exceptionally nice and friendly. In fact, so was every Apple employee I encountered at the Florida Mall location today. One lady one the phone kept calling me by the wrong name, but that's OK. She was super nice.
I finally got to the Apple Store in the mall and there was a queue outside. My guess is that those were for iPhone people, because I just walked up to some employee at the front of the line. She quickly setup an appointment for me and guided me to another queue inside the store, with only a couple in front of me.
Shortly after that, I met a guy at a table, we got my correct model of Apple Watch, and then I rushed home to pick up my wife from work.
There were a few points where the Apple employees were telling me I should cancel my online order, but I wasn't willing to do it until I saw the right box in front of me. That's just because I know you can get screwed if you cancel and the inventory is wrong, someone else buys the last one, etc. Once I saw the box, then I canceled.
So what have I learned from all of this? If nothing else, ordering online a week in advance is a colossal waste of time and mental energy. This entire thread full of people wanting to track every detail of their order, wondering if they're going to get bumped ahead, why they can't get their order when they got up at 3:09 AM EDT, etc - it's a pointless exercise.
Despite having done all of that, all it really took was just paying attention to which store had what I want the day AFTER launch (because they told me it was complete madhouse on Friday) and then standing around for 15 minutes to buy it.
Even better, I saved a few bucks because the Apple Store at Florida Mall is in a county with a lower sales tax than where I live - so yay for me.
Now I just have to figure out how this thing works.
