I can't recall ever using this feature once. I use it when I'm on wifi all the time, but honestly, never ever ever on 3G.

Although i'm in the UK so all this Verizon iPhone hullaballoo doesn't get me exited at all.

However from what I've heard the so called crappy service AT&T are offering (which I have experienced first hand in the US), is not excusable just because they offer voice and data at the same time.

But doesn't the whole no voice and data thing not contradict the point of a mobile hotspot feature, if you're using the mobile hotspot to work on your macbook, and have to take a call, your SOL.

From my point of view, it looks like Verizon FTW, with some disadvantages.

For now, I'm more interested to see if the mobile hotspot feature will be enabled for the rest of us on other carriers that do have voice and data capabilities.

Smartphone_Consumer_Survey.pdf

Perhaps, this can silence the OP once and for all.

Survey of 1,006 smartphone users with a 3G smartphone & associated data plan from multiple carriers (Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.):

38% Can’t Live Without It
51% Do Voice and Data Several Times a Week

Since only AT&T can do simultaneous data/voice, I think these numbers pertain to the AT&T users, only.

Wrong T Mobile and 4G Sprint phones can also do, it if you're in a 4G WiMax area. The TS said he can do it on Wifi with a Droid X on |Verizon, so that shows all 4 major carriers can do it some way or another

honestly almost all the time, even at my apt, I still leave it on 3G even though I have high speed internet throughout the whole apt.
cool it w/ the hatorade OP, voice/data is a big feature and if you are in Verizon you can't have it on the iPhone. I find it funny that personal experience such as yours then that makes it the standard for everyone else. Unless your city has full free WIFI there is always somewhere you will want to use both and can't and will be limited.

Hold on one second there. You mention the problem right in your own message. AT&T was fine in texas (which is where they have alot of support at) and not so good in LA where Verizon has the better service. ITS REGIONAL FOLKS, One company is better in a an area then others. I live in San Antonio and travel all through out south texas, I have NO CONNECTION ISSUES AT ALL WITH AT&T. My verizon blackberry ALWAYS loses connection out in the country. I constantly see a 1x on it and only get a 3G signal when I am in San Antonio, Austin or the Valley. Maybe thats why they dont have alot of verizon stores here in San Antonio, there coverage sucks.

Yep that's the way I've always seen it and the pissing contests with people on these forums over which carrier is so lame. It's a CARRIER people they all suck in the end and only care about their bottom line. They don't give 2 sh&*ts about you. A particular carrier does NOT define you as a person so why is eveyone getting so personal?

If I was still in Texas, I'd be using AT&T, although I had friends back home on Verizon that didn't have too many issues.

FWIW I'm from San Antonio TOO! 28 years in old S.A. before I moved out here. Plus another 7 in San Angelo (before we even imagined cell phones :))

Here's the deal so maybe some of these bickering threads can end- What matters most is what provider works for you in your area. Having a particular carrier does NOT make you uber-elite or special. It does not define you and if you think it does, that's pretty sad. Just remember, all they care about is your monthly payment. You miss a payment and you're no longer a "valued customer".

So, if you are bound by need to use a particular carrier because it WORKS best for you in a particular area, then you are bound to their devices. Doesn't matter if on one carrier you can watch pron while in a call if it drops calls all the time. Doesn't matter if another carrier has the most subscribers if it doesn't work for you.

In the end we have to use whatever is best for the individuals needs. That may mean one carrier is missing a feature over another. In the grand scheme of things, with all the issues in the world- WHO CARES???!

I use this feature frequently. Especially when I'm on hold and not near a computer or I need to look something up online while on the phone. It's a great feature to have and I personally don't want to live without it.

I use it a lot to give directions or look-up phone numbers (restaurants, etc). It's a handy feature that you sort of expect to just be there.

However, Verizon will get it eventually (with LTE) won't they?

I talk and surf the net all the time....

especially when on the phone with a female friend who wants to talk all night....i can tweet, surf the interent, check my mail, check my facebook, play a game of words with friends

i know non ATT users who cant even get picture messages and say "i have to hang up to see what u sent"
