There's a deal breaker right there! Listening to music= missing out on work/income.

Yeah, it's a pretty big deal breaker. I'm almost always streaming Pandora in the car and how can I do that if I don't get any calls...

And the new Garmin App is rendered useless on VZW also because it is downloading maps in the background. GPS or Phone, you have pick one

Um, no. Phone calls, texts still come through, you almost don't even notice the difference...

If you're on the phone and not near wifi, you can't use 3G data. But you can certainly use data and still receive calls..

how the hell would Verizon have the most customers if you couldn't use data and receive calls? Do people really believe this?

I don't use it super often, but I deffinatly like it when I need it. It wouldn't be something that I would decide a carrier based on though. I won't be switching to verizon for other reasons though. 1) att is pretty good where I'm usually at, I have 3G just about everywhere. 2) att is improving all the time. Where I didn't get good 3G at before, it's getting better. 3) eventually, att will have as much 3G coverage as verizon in places that don't have LTE, and will be faster than verizon in those places when you have to fall back on it. 4) I have unlimited data. That may or may not happen with verizon, but it seems att is good about letting people stay grandfathered, were I've heard verizon may not be. I don't mind waiting for at&ts network to get better in other places as it's not really effecting me right now, because I know when they do make all the nessasary changes, there network will be amazing all over, and I'm not gonna give up my unlimited plan right now to go to another carrier only want to come back in a few years to a super fast network that I can only use 2gb on. Good things come to those who wait.

Because you can't. With my iPhone i can be on an active phone call and at the same time with no interruption i can i can download a song from itunes or download an app. Update my facebook status, etc.

You cannot do that on Verizon. Text messages are not considered "data" they are sent thru the SMSC which would be why if your ever experiencing a data outage you can still send and get Text messages.

Verizon is the biggest company as you mentioned and even though they are the largest its a limitation of the CDMA Tech that Verizon is using that will not allow this. And since the iPhone is not SVDO capable unless your connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot you won't be sending and receiving data anytime soon on big red.

I use pandora and youtube many times while I'm driving. I need to see what calls I'm recieving.

LOOK. Here's the deal with Verizon and Android. I have both.

You are utilizing data, you are streaming music, you get a call, the DATA pauses, the call comes in, you take the call, you hang up, the data RESUMES. If you were browsing the internet, you merely hit the browser button after the call, it takes you back to where you were.

It DOES NOT send your calls to voicemail. Jesus.

You are using your phones GPS via Google Nav, you get a call, THE GPS STILL WORKS while you're on the call! If a turn is coming up the GPS cuts in and tells you to turn. The other party cannot hear it.

You're listening to music via a media player, you get a call, the music PAUSES, you take the call, you end the call, the music resumes.

Do people just make **** up as they go?

I do not think the lack of this feature is a big deal with WiFi literally everywhere

it really isn't. Just because its that available where you live does not mean its that available everywhere.

Ok. So say if I am on a call and I am asked to quickly look up something on safari. With Verizon I would have to hang up, look it up, then phone back. Not the end of the world, but a bit of a pain none the less.

NOTE: I didn't read thru the 6+ pages of replies so apologies if this has already been addressed.

Sorry, but AT&T has nothing but this one teeny thing on Verizon. And this teeny thing doesn't matter to many people, again, because of WiFi.

My honest answer - since owning three iPhones since they first arrived on this planet, I have maybe used data & voice simultaneously five times. Maybe even four.

My question to you is (honest answers only of course), what does it matter to you? Why do you care what network person A has vs. person B?

As to not incite the OP into ranting that *I* don't understand the question

I use both data and voice often while NOT on WiFi. Meaning - I am in a location using ONLY 3G.

I have friends that also use it quite often simultaneously because they use their phones as GPS's and have map programs. They also talk on the phone at the same time via handsfree. To not have that ability (for them) would be bad.

To each their own. The tone of the OP with the word "HONESTLY" and"SERIOUSLY" is already trying to skew the answers.

As the poster before me asked - why do you care what someone else does or doesn't do or need. Worry about yourself. If YOU don't need to use both at the same time - then switch or don't switch. No validation needed or required.

I use both simultaneously fairly frequently. I would expect a decent number of people do not, however.

Not really a huge deal. I hope a lot of people are willing to go without it, and unload some of the heavier traffic from the ATT network.

Ohhhh you let me have it ;)

I *NEVER* use data when I'm on a phone call.

For me, this is going to be a matter of who I can pay less with. If it's Verizon, so be it. I get a discount through my employer with AT&T. It's simply going to be a matter of economics with me. Who will I get a better deal with...

Pretty much.

For me it is a matter of I'm already with AT&T, I'm happy with them. But if Verizon offers a tempting enough deal, I'd consider switching. But if they offer me the same deal or I don't care about the perks they are offering, I'm staying (particularly cause then I don't have to chance a new carrier that I have no idea if I am going to like or not over a carrier I already have had good experience with).

I admit I like AT&T and I've been with them/Cingular since 02/03 (Can't remember) but offer me something good that is better than what I'm getting now, you might get a new customer.

I use voice and data at the same time while not near wi-fi very often. I am the kind of person where if I am talking to somebody and think about something but cannot fully remember everything I saw I want to look it up right then. So quite often I do things like "I read something about that.. hold on let me pull that up" and switch over to safari or something to pull it up. I find it very handy.

Also, if I am on a boring conference call on my iphone makes a good time to check facebook.

So yes, I use it very often. Some people I am sure don't, but I am one that does.

That IS correct. Whether it's a hassle to you or not is a personal decision based on your needs or wants. What is a hassle to ME is the fact that in my area of Los Angeles AT&T cannot hold a signal and constantly drops calls. So THAT is more of an inconvenience that not being able to have data & voice at the same time. I do NEED to make phone calls.

I'm not bashing AT&T. I was a long time customer of AT&T/ cingular in Texas and once I moved to L.A., I HAD to switch. I would have preferred NOT to but, I constantly dropped calls. I had no choice. Verizon on the other hand for the past 5 years (and 10 for my wife) has never dropped a single call.

To those of you though who think that just because people will leave AT&T your problems will magically vanish, you're in for a surprise. AT&T has had these issues WAY before the iPhone and they only became really evident BECAUSE of the iPhone. A bunch of subscribers leaving is not going to help.

Hold on one second there. You mention the problem right in your own message. AT&T was fine in texas (which is where they have alot of support at) and not so good in LA where Verizon has the better service. ITS REGIONAL FOLKS, One company is better in a an area then others. I live in San Antonio and travel all through out south texas, I have NO CONNECTION ISSUES AT ALL WITH AT&T. My verizon blackberry ALWAYS loses connection out in the country. I constantly see a 1x on it and only get a 3G signal when I am in San Antonio, Austin or the Valley. Maybe thats why they dont have alot of verizon stores here in San Antonio, there coverage sucks.

Smartphone_Consumer_Survey.pdf

Perhaps, this can silence the OP once and for all.

Survey of 1,006 smartphone users with a 3G smartphone & associated data plan from multiple carriers (Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.):

38% Can’t Live Without It
51% Do Voice and Data Several Times a Week

Since only AT&T can do simultaneous data/voice, I think these numbers pertain to the AT&T users, only.

Just a short response but I use the voice and data at the same time multiple times a day. A lot of my time is spent on the phone using my bluetooth headset and i commonly use safari to look up information or write emails. Today in my one trip out spent 10 minutes waiting at the pharmacy talking on the phone and responding to emails and fb messages. So not a make or break thing but its the small things that makes my phone enjoyable for me.... If I was on VZW I would have had to sit there and listen to music and respond to people or make my call and play one of the few games I have that does not connect to the internet for some reason. I live in an area with great ATT coverage so I dont have the same issue as some people but that all goes back to go with what provider just works for you... If you have no signal the phone is not able to be a phone. Ok that wasnt so short....

Ok, that top left pie chart makes no sense.

They don't say if the percentage of people pertain to those that want a carrier with more experience or those that want a possibly faster network but untested. The answers are very important or somewhat important to the question of experience vs. new fast but untested. But *which* one the people are saying is important they don't say.

plenty of times, at first when AT&T started airing those statements a few years ago i started thinking "wtf are they pressing this so hard, i don't use it much"

Then as time went by i realized i do it all the time, if your on the phone with someone and you need info it comes in very handy.

Now on the other hand...

I cant believe verizon is going to promote there hotspots with there cdma iphone, someone calls or text and it breaks your connection, so much for a hotspot. Especially if you have multiple people depending on it. Also Facetime on cmda, what happens with that? I imagine it could run but if you get a call or text it disconnects you (because with VZ calls take priority over data)

It's a feature that is highly overrated. Most people will claim to use a homing pigeon if someone says they will not include it in there next purchase of a building. All of a sudden "Hey, I use that homing pigeon daily and I want it back lol!

You hit the nail it's regional. We live in the Philadelpia area and I can honestly say I can't remember dropping a call. Data speed varies in the area but sufficient for me. I travel alot within the Philly metro area and voice and data is sufficient.

If voice and data weren't sufficient and I dropped lot of calls and data stunk then I wouldn't be with AT&T.

It boggles my mind why people don't investigate carriers in their area to see which offers the best and reliable service. So many got iPhones cause they wanted the iPhone without investigating and found out that att wasn't good in their region. Then they start crying and bashing Att when in reality it's the fault of the consumer.

Pick carrier FIRST. I'm sure Verizon stinks in some regions as well as Att. And I'm sure Verizon is excellent in some regions as well as Att.

In my area Philadelphia it seems like Verizon is excellent. I know Att is great cause I've been with them for a ling time.
