I do find it interesting how Apple's QC seems to be lacking this year. Both the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4 have more than their fair share of issues. Perhaps it's time Apple switches from Foxconn to a better manufacturer (perhaps US based?). I'd gladly pay more money to have a guaranteed quality product. and I've got to wonder if it really would cost apple that much more, since I'd imagine they wouldn't have to supply nearly as many warranty exchanges as they currently do.

I think just like lots of companies Apple will gather feedback , and in mid gen/run change if needed the manufacture of parts.
happens in any industry.

For sure. Shoot, the touch is so thin now, light is leaking inside. LOL :D

Maybe they should've made bumpers for the touch?

After returning two defective touches in a row I've decided to just not get one. The second return was a huge hassle (five stuck pixels on a $500 device out of the box is unacceptable) and I don't want to get another one with light leaking out the sides or some other problem. I've wasted more time dealing with returns and trying to find a store that has one then enjoying the product. My 5'th gen 80GB is still kicking around on its original battery and the build quality seems to be much better 4 years ago then it is now. Truly disappointed.

Are you privy to Apple's warranty claims? Forums are a lousy place to get warranty data, especially for products that sell in very large quantities. Way too much noise to be useful. GIGO.

There are also no US-based manufacturers that could even approach the volumes necessary. Plus no one wants to pay, say, $500 for a 32GB Touch.

Even though I had a $120 gift certificate for Futureshop, I thought that the store had gotten a bad batch and decided to purchase the 64GB touch from Best Buy instead. After spending another few days calling around they finally got two units in.

I take the unit home, hoping the third time is the charm and out of the box there's a black dead pixel in the middle of the screen. To add insult to injury, another two stuck pixels to the right. I took it back an hour later, get the only one they have left and what do you know, over an inch of light leaking out of the left and 2 cm on the right.

This is a faulty product. Four (4!) defective 64GB iPod touches in a row. Despite how badly I still want one of these (why?) I have no choice but to give up. This is ridiculous, I've never had to return so many units of a product in my life. After the antennagate I'm seriously questioning Apple's current build quality.

For comparison,

Our iMac: Perfect out of the box.
Macbook Pro: Perfect out of the box.
Macbook: " "
Both my and my sister's iPod Nano: " "
My nearly four year old white iPod 80GB still going on its original battery, same thing.
Lastly, my DS Lite with two screens and twice the chance for dead/stuck pixels, flawless out of the box.

It's not me, it's this faulty product as evidenced by many threads popping up over the 'net recently.

It's been pointed out to me that the possibility of poor manufacturing from one factory routed to Canada/international (at least my town) could explain why there's such a huge bad batch. Since I still really want one of the new touches I'm going to try one last time by ordering directly from Apple's website. Hopefully that makes a big difference.

Hmm... That's an interesting hypothesis. 4 bad touches?!?! Yikes. I've had two so far. My local Apple store has a few 32G's in stock and I hope to pick one up tomorrow. Praying that I get a good one without any probs. I hope you get a winner as well.

For all the swappers ;) Let me give you a little hint. Always look at the serial number - it's first letters/numbers indicates the factory plant (9C, 1A, et), so if you got a defective unit from let's say C plant, try to swap for the one from plant A. That way you should get an iPod from different factory from a different batch.

Good luck! :)

I don't think I supposedly blew things out of proportion.

I take it then that you're basically calling everyone who has said that they're having problems with the new iPod Touch a liar? Am I right?

EDIT: Then again, I can see from your signature why you'd say something like that...

And I can see from your signtute you appear to be anti-Jobs, maybe even anti-Apple. From this It's easy to understand why you're so critical of the new iPod Touch. Such an amazing decide will have it's critics and it's faults will be inflated. The fact Apple unlike most companies has such an easy exchange policy should, but doesn't relax some of those critics.

Maybe we should post the quality of our ipods and the the factory where it was made, if its good other users can look for an ipod from the same factory

Mine is perfect, no clicking, no light leak, no problems at all, serial number starts with CC

That's a good idea. I wish I would have made a note of the serial number of the two that I had problems with. I'll have to look at the purchase and return paperwork to see if it might be listed on there somewhere. Does anyone know if you can find the serial numbers of iPods that were registered on a computer somewhere in iTunes or on a PC?

Edit: I think I may have found the serial number on the order acknowledgement email that I received from Apple, but I'm not sure if this is it: MCNNNLL/A. This is not the actual number, but does it fit the correct format? I'll look for the "CC" numbers when I purchase the next one. Thanks in advance

Got mine directly from Apple on launch day and I have zero problems with it.

Same here.

iPod touch 4G 32GB, ordered straight from Apple with standard shipping. Everything is fine. No light leaks, no garbled audio, everything is perfect.

Only a handful of buyers are having problems.

Just go to settings -> General -> About and serial number is stated right there.

Two of my defective touches serials began with CC, the other two started with 1P. Is it really the serial and not the parts number that give away the factory?

Sorry to be confusing. I'm trying to find the serial for an iPod that I already returned just to check to see if it fit this theory. So I don't have it on hand, but I think I found it on my original purchase paperwork. Just wanted to confirm the format/number of digits to make sure I'm looking at the right one. I don't currently have the 4g because I returned two with probs.

Does this look like the serial number MCNNNLL/A? Or is this something else that I found on the receipt?
