The only reason I want landscape typing for SMS is the fact that if I'm laying down, typing with 2 thumbs in portrait is almost impossible because you can't get a decent grip on the phone. The iPhone is so narrow that both of my hands can't grip it very well when it's in portrait. It's fine for while I'm sitting upright or typing with one finger, but trying to type while laying down is very difficult.

How does everyone else grip their iPhone? I hold it kind of loose with both hands and keep it from falling down by resting my pinky fingers on the bottom.

Does anyone know where the original iPhone tutorials are with the video guy showing you how to type on the iPhone?

Can you really hold the phone with one hand and type? I almost never see anyone doing it which makes me wonder.

I usually use my pinkies to support the bottom and my index fingers to squeeze from the top, that's my grip, while at the same time all other fingers are at the back to keep it from falling and my thumbs are typing. But sometimes I type your way.

Oh, and alls I gots is this: http://www.apple.com/iphone/guidedtour

To send emails or sms, I hold my iphone in my left hand and use my right index finger to type the message. For me, it works quite nicely.

Right, because street view was sooooo helpful, beneficial... and non-superfluous to the "already small amount of memory on the iPhone."

Along this line, I have to wonder...maybe Apple added street view before landscape because they actually did get more requests for that feature? That IS possible, you know. I wonder about that regarding a lot of the new features that so many forum posters blast as completely useless. It's thoroughly possible that those are the most requested features. Not every iPhone owner is a hacker-wannabe forum junkie.

Some of the opposition to this idea is completely ridiculous.

If you like typing with one hand in portrait mode, then that's fine. But there are a LOT of people that would like to type much faster with both thumbs in landscape.

Remember a little phone called the "Sidekick"? There's a reason why the Sidekick became such a popular phone amongst kids that send thousands of text messages a day, because it was fast. Have you ever seen a Sidekick user text message? It's absurd. I have friends that can type as fast as they could type on a desktop keyboard, if not faster.

Right now, the iPhone is not a phone for "power texters".

I would love to have a landscape keyboard when texting. It could be implemented easily, and could be turned on and off. When turned on, the motion sensor would detect when you had the phone sideways.

Hey old people, get over it.

Seriously... GET OVER IT.

Complaining on an internet forum is not going to make it happen any sooner. If you want to complain, complain to Apple - at least there's a small chance that someone who matters will actually read them.
Seriously, THIS IS AN IPHONE FORUM.

Discussing what we don't have in our iPhone is completely reasonable, and trust me, I've emailed Apple about this.

I do it while driving all the time, haha.

One reason I miss my Blackberry is because I could text while driving without even looking at it, I could just feel where the buttons were, and type full, properly punctuated sentences without even looking down.

I love my iPhone, but it does make driving a little less safe.

then how about you stop risking other peoples lives and quit typing while driving? thats basically like admitting you drink and drive. in fact its been found that texting while driving is actually WORSE than drinking and driving. stop being an idiot. i text ALL of the time but never while driving.

personally I find portrait a hell of a lot easier to type on.
and my fingers aren't the thinnest things in the world.

maybe some people just need something to bitch about?

I have a feeling that the reason Apple added Street View is because they can market that feature. It's the latest and greatest thing, very 2.0, and so Apple is wise to include it with their phone. Adding SMS doesn't exactly excite most people, even among Apple fans half of the crowd doesn't seem to even care all that much. Personally I'd love to have it, but it's obvious that Apple prefers to add features that can excite people and attract them to the product - like street view. "Look at this great street view!" ss opposed to, "look at this landscape SMS... just like all the other phones!" Personally I don't care about Street View whatsoever (as its useless to anyone not living or traveling in the US), and I'd much prefer landscape mode, but at least I think I know why we get the former but not the latter.

I too wonder why they haven't yet but landscape keyboard into SMS, Mail, or Notes yet. It's not like it's hard, they've done it with plenty of other apps!

Really? Plenty other Apps? Which other Apps have a landscape keyboard that Apple made?

1. Safari

If anyone can think of any more, let me know.

No. There is a difference between driving drunk, and choosing when is/is not an appropriate/safe time to be texting while driving. I make a 30 minute highway commute 2 times a day from the middle of nowhere in Texas with no traffic. So, looking at my phone for literally 3 seconds when there are no cars around, I'm on a straight open highway, and I'm using cruise control, is exactly the same thing as looking down to change the radio station/iPod or looking at your GPS.

Do you ever adjust your A/C while driving? Stop endangering people's lives. :)

I'm kidding. But, seriously; there's a difference between me and a 16 year old high school cheerleader listening to Justin Timberlake at full blast while checking her MySpace on her phone and chatting with her friends before driving her mom's BMW into a ditch.

Yeah. I've texted while driving, but I think texting takes a lot more concentration than turing your A/C knob. Also, what does Justin Timberlake have to do with checking MySpace have to do with it? Being distracted is being distracted no matter what you're doing. Texting = being distracted.

I'm a little sensitive to people texting while driving. Two years ago, a friend of mine was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a 17-year old that texting on his phone. He died in the hospital the next day.

It's pretty clear cut to me. Texting and driving don't mix.

That sucks man. I feel for you.

I would love a landscape keyboard in email, SMS and notes! I have had the iPhone/iPhone 3G since the original launch and STILL hit "c" or "v" instead of the space bar in portrait mode. When in portrait mode, I am horribly inaccurate and always end up having to correct words when sending messages in portrait. On the other hand, landscape rocks! I almost never need to correct myself. Also, if I am replying to a text message, I dont need to be able to re-read the conversation. Give me a landscape text box and I am happy.

I was giving an example of someone listening to loud music while being distracted by their phone, which is obviously an unsafe situation.

The A/C example was a stretch, but it DOESN'T take a lot more concentration to change radio stations or press the "zoom in" button on your GPS.

(Although, I've been in a Lexus with a touch screen that makes changing the A/C settings pretty complicated.)

I'm very sorry to hear that. But I'm sure there's also been people killed because women have been putting makeup on in their review mirror, or because someone is telling the kids in the back seat to stop fighting.

Essentially, what I'm saying is: It's not the phone, or the iPod, or the glove compartment's fault, it is the driver's fault. People need to use their better judgment to decide when it is or isn't a safe time to type a text message or change songs on their iPod.
