No, we don't agree on that. I trust the motives that Apple had more than I trust the EU's ability to dictate standards. Why everyone thinks USB C is the end-all of great standards is beyond me. I like USB C, but it's not perfect, and again, I see no evidence that Governments are better at making these decisions than are tech companies.
Firstly. I doubt the regulation was targeted at Apple only. I have a bunch of electric razors, all of them with their own proprietary charging cables. Same case with a lot of utilities that have proprietary cables. Apple just happened to be one of the companies that used proprietary cables. Was the change good? Definitely, but Apple, as usual, implemented it with malicious intent by limiting the regular models to USB C 2.0 speeds. So, is this the company that you guys are saying will willingly transition to something that is useful for the majority? Apple is a money grab company, plain and simple. The only way Apple will come back to the Earth is when the government targets it and heavily regulates every piece of its business. Otherwise it is already too late.

Ah but the plug change was about power supply. Not data transfer speed. Shows EU has no idea how to specify things ;)

USB C encompasses a lot more than the physical plug. The EU forgot that.

Yeah, that is why I said implemented with mailicous intent. If it wanted the best for its users, it would have used USB-C 3.0 for all. But we know that Apple deliberately does things to differentiate between the models and they are almost always by taking away things rather than adding stuff.

The people of the EU have already voted for the EU parliament, whose role is to make legislation for the good of the majority. They elect the parliament so that there is no need to vote on every single issue. The European Parliament (EP) voted in favor of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in July 2022 with 588 votes in favor, 11 votes against, and 31 abstentions. The Council of the European Union also endorsed the DMA in July 2022. The Parliament formally adopted the DMA on July 5, 2022, and the Council adopted it on July 19, 2022. The Presidents of the Parliament and the Council signed the DMA into law on September 14, 2022. End of.

You can view i as malicious but Apple also limited Lightning data transfer speeds on cheaper devices.
And on laptops. They didnt update some Macbook Airs to faster when they could have. It depends upon what chips they use and sometimes saving very few dollars is their aim. Perhaps they guess buyers of cheaper devices dont know or care about transfer speeds.

So while it might seem malicious to you, other factors could be at play.

That’s voting by government regulation; the worse type of inducing artificially inducing company by giving away its assets for free. It’s just bad legislation all around and benefits only the large developers who are going to avoid certain fees and fragments the ecosystem.

Germany voted in Hitler...
Russians are about to vote and no real option to Putin...

I dont think voting in a person or party equates to a government of any kind being good for the masses.

Lobby groups with access and donations often have the loudest voices when it comes to voting anywhere.

And Brexit happened of course...

All of those companies combined are nothing compared to Apple. Hardly the same level of success.
Also, tell that to a company that owns basically 50 percent of the commercial airline market. I think we are talking the same level of success.

some other country (or group of countries) should regulate against that 50% success/monopoly... :)

More of a duopoly really, but tbf the only competitor for a while was russia, and their aircraft are, tbf, crap. China wants in but at this point Boeing and Airbus are pretty well entrenched, and neither the US or the EU seem keen on taking the other's company to task.

uh-huh.... You are aware that the whole purpose of my posts was to point out how fallacious @cocky jeremy's arguments were right? I am strongly of the opinion that the EU's move is a step in the right direction.

They were so smart with SetApp. Been paying for 6 years for 10 apps I could have just bought by now 😅
Try to avoid subscriptions as far it’s possible. I rather pay for the apps I want and buy them if I can. Which means, if I can buy them, I do - if I must have subscriptions I choose as few as I can.
