Maybe wait a bit, its the first beta, maybe things will be “universal” once the final release. If not, the usual hacks will change that.
Probably not in this release IMHO, or they would not have documented that in their Mac OS Monterey web page. Thats not to say future incremental releases of Mac OS Monterey add that functionality, even if its not quite the same. :)

Well, if you had to write a list of things I wouldn’t even notice not working on my Mac Mini, that’d pretty much cover it.

Everyone: “this is an outrage! Screw Apple!”

Also everyone: “ordered my maxed out MBP! Woo!”

🤣

This is an outrage. No technical reason this can’t be on Intel.
Forced depreciation in action.
Apple is apparently relying on the Neural Engine for all of these features. The equivalent features in iOS are only supported on iPhones and iPads that have an A12 processor or higher. The 2019 base iPad with an A10 can’t run them either.

Given what other apps have done, I don't see why the features could not run on the Intel Macs. I don't really care about these features, but at the same time Apple is starting a cull and it isn't cool when I have just paid over three grand for a Mac a year and a bit ago. That being said I like to play Windows games every now and then, and as this is currently not possible on Apple CPUs with anywhere near full performance (Not that this is a good set up or nor do I expect Macs should be able to, but it was a nice touch in the old Intels) naturally I will probably be moving away from Apple when the time comes in four or so years.

The iPhone has already gone and I have an android, although that was just to save cash in our new world. Maybe Apple will release the features one day on the intel Macs, who knows. But I am generally looking to move away from Apple as they have lost what attracted me to them all those years ago.

I used to like the simple and basic features of Apple products, and I liked the rules of the design. All this is going out of the window. I am sure they will be fine, as they seem to be attracting many new people to replace the ones lost. But that was my view on the matter.

PowerPC Macs had at least three years of support after the last one was discontinued, and five years of patches.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tim Cook's Apple kills off Intel support by 2023.
PowerPC got one major OS release, Leopard, as they shipped them with Tiger. I do hope that Apple gives us at least 1-2 more releases after Monterrey, but there is precedent as far as operating system support during a CPU transition.

I don't want to add to the vitriol but it seems a little wacky that an intel iMac I bought in 2021 won't be able to recognize text in photos while my iPhone SE from 2016 will.
Live text (and all these other missing features) requires an iPhone/iPad with an A12 or higher.

Apple said they were moving to AS within 2 years. Is it controversial that I wouldn’t care a bit if they dropped support for Intel machines when I can’t wait to throw my money at a 16” AS MBP? My 2018 MBP was obsolete to me the day the M1 was announced.

Good...goood.... now everybody go and buy a brand new Mac M1.

this makes no sense. I want apple to keep to it's promise to fully support intel macs for years to come, not for 1 year only to start being eliminated from OS feature upgrades thereafter. To defend this nonsense is to just encourage it, and also an admittance that the rug hasn't been pulled from under you, yet.
Supporting Intel Macs does not translate to all features having to be compatible with them; no major OS works this way.

From an engineering standpoint, what you're demanding makes no sense & blocks what Apple is known to do well the most: Innovation (not to be confused with invention; they're deliberately not the first to do many transformative things in tech in the mobile & desktop market).

Their primary reason of transitioning to Apple Silicon was to innovate with features Intel-based CPUs wouldn't allow them to do. Your argument would make more sense if you were challenging specific features not being supported on Intel Macs like the 3D globe feature.

It's great that my less than a year old Mac Mini will already be starting to miss out on features.

Not even though. They're still selling computers with Intel CPUs - they've just majorly cut down on the number of people who will buy their higher revenue (and I assume higher profit) computers... the Mac Pro and the Intel MacBook Pros.

So this is how macOS on Intel dies… with thunderous applause. o_O
How long is Apple supposed to support Intel CPUs and try to keep feature parity when the APIs and such for these features aren’t even built with Intel in mind? Where is their dedicated neural engine?

Perhaps if Intel had moved a little faster instead of thinking they could dictate the pace of innovation on PCs forever, Apple might have stuck with them. This is on Intel and even if the M1 isn’t the Jesus chip, it’s a damn sight better than the same 14nm slop Intel has been handing out to users for the last 7 years. Not to mention that Intel doesn’t even have a presence in the mobile arena when they could have owned the space. Intel is and has been a dumpster fire, now it’s time for them to reap what they have sewn.
