An interactive 3D globe doesn't require a neural network to display. Google Earth has had a 3D interactive map for almost fifteen years.

They NEVER have to explain anything - it's their choice. However, just because that is the case doesn't mean that people can't be rightfully angry about it.

Apple is selling devices TODAY that aren't capable of the full set of features in their latest OS release. This isn't a "we finished our transition to Apple Silicon - these new features will only be available for Apple Silicon Macs." This is them continuing to sell Macs starting at $1800 USD that will immediately become obsolete as it relates to running the full software stack.

That's not to say that some of this stuff does seem to require Apple Silicon support - like live text, etc. But that doesn't mean consumers can't be angry about this.
People seem to forget quickly but it was very similar when they switched from PowerPC to Intel

This OS release is beta and there is no reason not to believe by the time it actually ships that all the current Macs (save one) will be refreshed to Apple Silicon. As long as your Intel Mac did everything it was promised to do on the day you bought it, I don't see a real issue.
One of the bargains struck in the Apple ecosystem is that new releases work on up to 5 year old hardware. If we now need to buy a new device every year for the OS to work then people may make a different decision.

So the first OS update my brand new iMac get won't support all the features.
Really does suck. I would have hoped for at least three years of being kept up to date.
Think Apple really are taking the p1ss with this one.

This, and the near infinite number of presenters during the keynote, just shows how weak Tim’s leadership is.

He has no idea what’s going on and doesn’t care. Software and hardware are fragmented. The entry level phone has more features than their most expensive workstation.

Not an anti-Intel conspiracy, just a shambles.

No doubt they have the resources as one of the largest, wealthiest companies in the world. They're still selling Intel Macs today. Forced deprecation sucks for customers.
They are one of the largest, wealthiest company for a reason, they don't waste resources on things that won't make them money. All current Intel Macs still have all the features they came with, and those who are going to buy a new Intel Mac aren't going to cancel their order because of a 3d globe.

Maps should be possible, but I assume they are using an Apple GPU feature and didn’t bother to rewrite it for Intel considering it isn’t an important feature. The other features require the neural engine to work, so no way those will come to Intel.

"Text-to-speech in more languages, including Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish"

¿Que? This already exists, and has existed for ages, It has nothing to do with M1. It is all about planned obsoletion.

It is time for the EU to slap Apple really hard, requiring any hardware to be fully supported for at least ten years.

Well, my next OS is not going to be whatever it was called this time, and my next computer and phone won't be "designed by Apple in California", but very much "made in China".

Shame. That live text feature would have been really helpful for my work, the others I won't ever bother with them. Maps don't even work in my country. But if this trend continues then i believe I will replace my 2018 MBP much sooner than the expected.
This is exactly what Apple wants to hear. If Tim Crook had a macrumors account, he would be rubbing his hands and grinning at this.

Very surprised Universal Control wasn’t on that list…

Me too, but very grateful it's a feature they decide to include on both. However, I suspect most of the features that are exclusive to M1 has to do with the Neural Engine not present on Intel Macs. Universal Control uses Bluetooth and WiFi. It wouldn't make sense to waste time and resources on developing a similar feature for Intel Macs that may or may not work as reliably.

I don't see this as planned obsolesce but more to do with having a 16 core neural engine.

Why waste time on intel? Apple Silicon is the main focus now. I'm grateful for that decision!

I own both Intel & M1 macs and understand that "Intel = past" and "Apple Silicon = future" – I prefer when Apple spends time polishing M1 features rather than on "old partner" compatibility. 🙌
