you should just take it to the Apple Store explain what happened and ask them what your options are.

similar thing happened to me with my 3g. I was at the gym when i dropped my iphone with the ncase slider. The LCD ended up being damaged. Took it to the apple store and the employee said he would take care of right away. five mins later he comes back with a new LCD and glass LCD in place. it can't hurt to try.

Just take out some phone insurence for it, if they ask to see the phone, ask your friend if you can borrow his to 'prove' that it isn't already broken and remember to your sim in it in case they call it.
Then, a few days later, claim it on accidental damage, they repair it for free or give you a new one. If they only cover lossage just say you lost it, you can then keep or cancel the insurence after you got your new iPhone.

Just say no to insurance fraud.

ive scratched that idea after finding out that i could get a replacement through apple for $199. I probably will be going that route.

Any idea of wait times for a replacement?

The Genius Bar does screen replacements instore. usually, they can be done in under 15 mins.

the question is, do they have that new "oliophilic" (sp?) screen in stock yet! lol

Also, screen replacement is usually not covered under the warranty, but its up to the discretion of the genius fixing it if they want to repair it under applecare.
so, appeal to the softer-side of the genius that is helping you!

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 32GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

I feel your pain!
I'd definitely recommend taking to the genius bar and paying the $199 if possible: a third party repair might seem a bit cheaper but you'll probably lose your warranty due to unauthorised repairs.

Step 1: Walk into the Apple store ( appointment or not )

Step 2: Breakdown in the middle of the store crying and screaming " IT BROKE!!! IT BROKE!!! AHHHHH!!!! "

Step 3: An apple worker may come over and ask what's the matter

Step 4: point to your phone still crying ( no words now ) maybe some cry boogers would be helpful.

Step 5: ????

Step 6: NEW IPHONE!!!!

Dang sorry to hear that. I'm surprised it cracked that much. Thisiphoneguy on youtube did multiple tests even from the roof of his house and the screen was intact.

I broke my 3g screen about a month ago but it wasn't bad enough to interfrear with operation of the phone. I did however order a glass repair kit for about 60 online just been to lazy to install it. I'm gonna sell it soon so I guess I better get on that!

LOL!!! This made my night. Thank you.

Any idea if i could sell it on ebay or here for... $100?

Why do that if you can replace the screen for $69.99 http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair.com/ but it most likely won't be the oleophobic coated screen.

Better yet, if you charged it to AmEx, they'll cover screen replacement under the 90 day Purchase Protection Plan (accidental damage and theft), as long as it's under $199/299. Just file a claim with AmEx and get it repaired through Apple.

I am so sorry that happened. Ugghh. Definately let us know what you decide to do.

I am planning on my very first iphone tonight and am so glad I saw this thread, I am definately planning on using Amex to buy now!

I bought a Squaretrade warranty on my 3G - 2 years full coverage (drops, spills, basically any kind of accidents) for $96, and there's only a $50 deductible if an accident happens.

I think the only limitation on it is that you have to make it through the first 30 days before the accident coverage kicks in, but hey, it's still worth it to me :)

That sounds like something im definitely going to get this go around. Full coverage/2years for $96... EXCELLENT. Thanks for the link :D

Ouch, that’s terrible. I would recommend taking it into the Apple Store and seeing what they can do. As someone else pointed out, I believe they do screen replacements in-store which will cut down your wait time; however, you’ll have to fork over some more money for the repair which should still be less than buying it unsubsidized.

That is a good idea, recommend insurance fraud. Classy

I remember someone on the forums going to an apple store, wanting to talk to a genius. He said his phone was acting up when the genius went to reach for the iPhone (which was screen side down) the owner dropped it, making it seem the genius didn't grab it right. Even thought the screen was broken before he got there the genius didn't know and replaced it for free.

But that's kinda ****ed up.

I love it! Makes my morning...

Another reason to buy it at Best Buy they offer accidental insurance.

For $15 a month, $180 a year? Much cheaper to self insure for $75 using one of the online screen replacement places and have your money work for you in the bank. $0 cost to you if you happen never to shatter the glass.
