Hmmm... A live mike with a network connection running 24/7 on my desk. What could go wrong?

This could have been really cool, but you just can't trust anyone anymore...

Yeah, cause the US Government were waiting precisely for this day so they can finally hear you say something like
- Honey, the dinner is ready!
- I'm coming love, just finishing my work [fap, fap, fap, fap, FAP, FAP, FAP, Oh, Yeaaaaa]

My god people are so self important. Nobody cares about you. You're not THAT important. You're not some millionaire, you don't work in some shady organisation. You're just a geek like us who spends some time on a gadget site and buys stupid stuff on Amazon once in a while. Get over yourself. Nobody wouldn't even want to know what music you are listening to, let alone your whole life.

anyone else realize shazam is also integrated into the beta ios 8? pretty sweet since sometime i never could get the app open in time

oh how naive one person can be......

That's probably true. For 99.99% of the potential Shazam users and their data. You seem to fail to understand that the NSA is all about that 0.01% invaluable data that is also out there.

It's not important what you listen to until they start selecting certain groups of people, based on songs, television programming, languages, prayers…

Huge privacy concern!!

How on earth did this pass Apple's policy and get not the App Store?

Not only does this pose a huge data security concern, it must also violate Apple's terms and conditions because this could potentially perform data gathering by recording what ITunes music is played by the user.

Finally, if you had some smart guy listening to the keystrokes I expect there is a way of picking up keys they are pressed on the keyboard due to the same design all Mac's and Macbook's have.... goodbye passwords :)

Avoid! - Oh and Apple, get this off the App Store!

I really don't see the need for this programme - who sits around getting sound samples of music from other device. People shouldn't be in such an noisy environment anyway. If you don't know the band / song / artist, then maybe you shouldn't be looking for music. Have people really become this lazy?

What a horrible idea! In what world is it to tedious to say, press a button when you want to find a song?

Just incase my ITunes fales to tell me what song I am listening to... oh hang on... didn't I click 'Play' to listen to it???

Sorry, but sounds creepy and intrusive. I don't have Shazam on any of my computers. Won't ever now for sure. If they add this "feature" to the iOS app I surely will delete ASAP and use SoundHound exclusively.

Maybe it's just me, but this seems more geared towards the people who use their laptops out in the real world, maybe sitting in a cafe somewhere with music playing in the background. Music that might sound good to you, but you haven't heard this song again and are curious as to what it is. It's obviously not for people using iTunes or whatever on the laptop that this is running for.

This can also be a good second screen feature (for the lazy) since it can get you to IMDB or something for whatever you are watching on TV, and you don't have to waste those 10 seconds or so typing in the name of the program into a search engine.

I'm important enough to understand why a key number of the Framers of the Constitution insisted on a Bill of Rights for American citizens before they signed on. You can denigrate ordinary citizens as much as you want, but we have Constitutional rights whether we are CEOs or cellar dwellers.

To dismiss as harmless or accept extra-constitutional activity as you do is to throw away your civil liberties that the Founders fought to secure; and that countless of Americans have fought to keep and expand in the years since. That is your option, but don't tell the rest of us to get over it. Some of us relish our unique freedoms and don't wish to see them diminished by apathy.

Surely in the real world someone would just whip out there phone and start Shazam on there wouldn't they? I mean, whipping out your laptop just because a song has come on the radio you like seems a bit excessive ;-)

The NSA wants access to my shazam for music recommendations. I listen to great music ;)

God, how ridiculous. There is this thing called "radio" which plays rather random music, and this thing called "TV" doing the same. Now how many of Shostakovich's symphonies would you recognise by sound? How many great sixties musicians do you know? There are a few songs out there that sound distinctly like David Bowie but aren't. And then how are you supposed to know the band/song/artist if someone has just released their first album?

What do you think happens if you play a song with these lyrics:

Ibrahim, Ibrahim, Ibrahim,
Allah, Allah, Allah, Allah we'll pray for you.
Hey!

Mustapha, Mustapha, Mustapha Ibrahim.
Mustapha, Mustapha, Mustapha Ibrahim.

Mustapha Ibrahim, Mustapha Ibrahim
Allah, Allah, Allah we'll pray for you.
Mustapha Ibrahim, al havra kris vanin
Allah, Allah, Allah we'll pray for you.
Mustapha, hey! Mustapha
Mustapha Ibrahim, Mustapha Ibrahim, hey!

Allah-i, Allah-i, Allah-i,
Ibra-Ibra-Ibrahim, yeah!
Ibrahim, Ibrahim, Ibrahim,
Allah Allah Allah-i hey!

Yeah, exactly. It's your right NOT TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO.
Bill of Rights is Bill of Privileges (c). If you really believe you have all those rights and nobody can strip them off you, you're delusional just like the people who think NSA will conquer the world with the help of Shazam data and knowing how many times 14yo girls have listened to Justin Bieber last week.

Shazam for Mac quietly monitors audio around the user's Mac

Quietly monitors? Finally, an app that doesn't exhibit the classic problem of making a bunch of noise when it's trying to use the microphone!

But speaking of the microphone, am I reading this correctly? Does it really monitor audio all the time? Why not just when you activate it? Seems like a horrible idea, both for the user (who wants a constant live mic in their house?!) and their servers (do they really want to handle constant requests from a bunch of users)?
