Unfortunately, while AT&T and Verizon have announced pricing plans for the iPad, neither have announced official support for mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. If AT&T follows the smartphone practice, you'll need the $50 5GB plan (otherwise, there really would be no reason to pick that plan since the $30 plan is 3GB with $10/GB overages). Verizon has a 1GB plan for $20 (vs AT&T's $15 for 250MB) so that looks a bit tempting, but it would be interesting to know what plans, if any they intend to support the hotspot feature with.

I have a 32 GB wi-fi loaded in the Apple Store app, set for pickup in a local APple Store. Thumb precariously hovering over Place Order.

Anyone have experience with picking up a launch-day device?
How does that work?

I don't have any experience picking up in a local apple store, but that just sounds like it would be a bit hectic that day.
I chose to have it shipped. I will *probably* be home that day to receive it, but if not I will just choose to have UPS/FedEx hold at their location. Picking up there will probably be less hectic than the Apple Store.

However, this can backfire depending on where the shipping hubs are. UPS and FedEx are fairly close to me. If it is shipped by OnTrac then I will curse to the Gods and ask Apple why they have forsaken me. They always screw up my Amazon orders, and lie about attempting delivery (my work desk has a window looking out to the front door). And their closest hub is an hour away, not to mention a toll bridge too.

Interesting that the AT&T Products went first :) Of course, now bring on the AT&T bashing, Verizon excuses, etc....

Devil is always in the details and when it comes down to making the choice, more choose AT&T. Got my 64GB model... Can't wait!

Glad I got my order in right after preordering went active. Anyone have any idea the amount these will sell on Ebay for?

I wouldn't necessarily take this as fact for now, but when I was googling "AT&T vs Verizon LTE iPad" to help me decide which carrier to go with, I came across an article that said "Verizon Wireless told us that mobile hotspot won’t cost any extra with the iPad, so you can use this feature without paying an extra fee."

Probably nothing.

If you notice, ship dates aren't slipping...that means Apple prepared for the volume of sales.

You aren't going to make much if anything off these because Apple was prepared for the onslaught of sales.

This time last year, shipments weren't even here yet. This year they are already in warehouses and more are coming each day.

Tim Cook made sure Apple had the stock ready. The only thing holding Apple back from selling more iPads last year and iPhones was themselves and being able to produce enough. This time they got ahead of the game and way ahead.

You are wasting your time thinking you will make money off these. If you do, it will be something small like $25.

9to5Mac is reporting that neither carrier will support hotspot.

i just ordered my AT&T 64GB and got a delivery date of the 16th. i'll save a little money because my county sales tax is $.06 but where my local apple store is it's $.07. plus free engraving.

of course IF i lose my iPad what are the odds it gets returned because of my name and address.

The first day shipping date lasted MUCH longer than I anticipated. I foresee a month long wait for the new iPad, at least one or two versions of it, by the 16th.

It lasted about 10 minutes in Hong Kong and a few minutes later it was completely sold out.
Apple still hasn't fixed the exploit that lets you buy more than 2 iPads per credit card and many people are buying batches of 20+ for resale...

If you have an iPad 2, there really is no reason to upgrade, yet. The latest iPad release was, at best, disappointing.

I disagree. The retina display and LTE were enough for me. Didn't hurt that I was able to sell my 64 gig 3G iPad 2 for $700 two weeks ago. Next Friday can't get here fast enough.

re: AT&T vs Verizon models

I agree. I pre-ordered a Verizon 32GB (white) one myself. My thinking is this:

1. Verizon has a larger established base of LTE support in the USA. Why go with the carrier with less coverage?
2. With the faster data rate, it'll be really easy to burn up your monthly data allocation. Therefore, the AT&T lower-cost plan at $15/month seems inadequate for a 4G LTE device. (I think that's the real reason a lot of people went with AT&T for their iPad. They're simply looking to see who has the cheapest plans and Verizon doesn't bother selling a plan with that small an amount of data on it.) The 2GB of data for $20 price is the same for both carriers though.

I'm surprised people are picking AT&T LTE iPads over Verizon ones enough to extend the ship date. I fortunately live in Houston where AT&T and Verizon LTE are available, as well as Sprint when they turn theirs on.

Since the new iPad has the same form factor as the iPad 2 *only a tiny bit thicker* Are the iPad 2 cases going to fit the new iPad? Or are Speck, Belkin, Incase etc.. going to start making new cases specifically for the new iPad?

Sounds like you're trying to make yourself feel better about your now outdated iPad 2 ;)

As somebody who doesn't own any iPad currently, the new iPad looks to be a huge upgrade, certainly larger than the iPad 1 -> iPad 2 upgrade.

Significantly better display
Significantly better camera
Significantly faster cellular modem option
likely 2x RAM
faster graphics processing
dictation mode

you've got to be joking!!! this was an insanely huge update!!

4x resolution over the iPad 2
4x the processing speed
dictation, not available natively on iPad 2
a 1mp camera with crappy optics Vs. a 5mp camera with 5 chips and integrated to the processor.
1080p video. you can watch and record 1080p video.
4g lte.

this is a muh bigger upgrade than going from iPad 1 to iPad 2!!!!

I stayed with AT&T because their non LTE speeds are way faster than Verizon. Verizon's LTE is in more places, but they still have a bunch of holes in my area.

you've got to be joking!! $700?? you found a real sucker. you can buy those used for around $350 even in mint condition!!

US Cellular is rolling out LTE this month, so I guess I'm "lucky". OTTH, no iPhone for me. But their service, call quality, and coverage area trumps that for me. Have to carry around both a phone and a Touch though. At the end of the day, a minor inconvenience than not being able to make calls, or getting bent over by AT&T.

Point is... Ure not using an iPhone

Maybe now, but two weeks ago they were selling for around $600. I threw in my black leather smart cover since I wasn't sure if it would be supported with the new one at the time.

If this new iPad is LTE - why does it still need verizon or att as choices? Shouldn't that be software driven?
