I'm surprised people are picking AT&T LTE iPads over Verizon ones enough to extend the ship date. I fortunately live in Houston where AT&T and Verizon LTE are available, as well as Sprint when they turn theirs on.

AT&T hasn't rolled out LTE in the Seattle area yet, so I chose Verizon.

I agree. I pre-ordered a Verizon 32GB (white) one myself. My thinking is this:

1. Verizon has a larger established base of LTE support in the USA. Why go with the carrier with less coverage?
2. With the faster data rate, it'll be really easy to burn up your monthly data allocation. Therefore, the AT&T lower-cost plan at $15/month seems inadequate for a 4G LTE device. (I think that's the real reason a lot of people went with AT&T for their iPad. They're simply looking to see who has the cheapest plans and Verizon doesn't bother selling a plan with that small an amount of data on it.) The 2GB of data for $20 price is the same for both carriers though.

I had the 32 White AT&T model on order but cancelled it and decided to go with Verizon now that the 1GB plan was announced. I'm in NYC so both of them have LTE here. For whatever reason, both AT&T and VZW's 32GB White models are still delivering on the 16th. I guess people either want the least expensive model or the most loaded up model.

I'm planning on getting the next iPhone (don't call it iPhone 5 anymore ;)) and may stick with AT&T for that. It probably isn't bad having more than one carrier.

Note that AT&T's $30 plan gives you 3GB of data, not 2GB as the site showed yesterday (it has since been updated). That said, I don't think I have ever gone above 1GB on my iPhone 4S, and I usually am right about 250-400MB.

That is very disappointing, but it looks like they've updated their article:

"Update #3: Verizon Spokeman Albert Aydin told us:

The new iPad on the Verizon Wireless network will have the mobile hotspot feature. Our 4G LTE tablets have the mobile hotspot feature and it is included in the tablet data plans so for example, customers who sign up for the $30 for 2GB plan will also have access to the mobile hotspot feature."

Somewhat funny is the response from AT&T:
"Update #2: We’ve received official word from AT&T that the hotspot feature is not currently supported for the new iPad, but the carrier is working with Apple to enable it “in the future”:

“We are working with Apple to enable this feature in the future, but we currently do not offer it.”"

Come on, it is on Apple? Somehow I find that hard to believe.

Hmm I ordered the Verizon 16GB white iPad wondering if I stuck an AT&T sim in there would it work on the AT&T 3G network(I know 4G wouldn't)but according to apple the iPad is unlocked

If you have an iPad 2, there really is no reason to upgrade, yet. The latest iPad release was, at best, disappointing.

Yah riiiiight.

Retina Display alone is worth upgrading.
Add in new Graphics GPU, Microphone, New Camera and 1MB RAM and those are big upgrades.

you've got to be joking!! $700?? you found a real sucker. you can buy those used for around $350 even in mint condition!!

You've got to be joking. A 64GB 3G iPad2 went for almost $829...it didn't lose more then half it's value just because the new one came out.

Heck the 16GB iPad 23G is $529 on the Apple site...that means that the sale of his for $700 is right in line of where it should be...$100 off the $829...so around $729.

The iPad2 sure didn't lose half it's value.

Probably nothing.

If you notice, ship dates aren't slipping...that means Apple prepared for the volume of sales.

You aren't going to make much if anything off these because Apple was prepared for the onslaught of sales.

This time last year, shipments weren't even here yet. This year they are already in warehouses and more are coming each day.

Tim Cook made sure Apple had the stock ready. The only thing holding Apple back from selling more iPads last year and iPhones was themselves and being able to produce enough. This time they got ahead of the game and way ahead.

You are wasting your time thinking you will make money off these. If you do, it will be something small like $25.

Remember there was also a terrible natural disaster this time last year that slowed iPad 2 deliveries.I had to wait 2 months for mine

I think AT&T is just looking for an excuse to charge extra for it and needs Apple to write something in the firmware to enable them to do so (just like they added the bogus "4G" designation to the 4S and took out the disable 3G toggle that other versions of 5.1 got).

Verizon's answer is better, but I would have preferred the answer be more explicit. Is it ALL data plans, or just the $30 and above plan? I changed my order to the Verizon model once they confirmed the $20 1GB plan would be available (it's a better deal than AT&T's $15 250MB plan even without hotspot).

Maybe now, but two weeks ago they were selling for around $600. I threw in my black leather smart cover since I wasn't sure if it would be supported with the new one at the time.

even a month ago the top iPad with 3g was only getting $380 at most. and you got an extra $100 for a used smart cover that is only $70. i managed to get $350 for my 64GB wifi a month ago, but that was in best buy, store credit. if i wanted cash the best i could find was $300. so you absolutely found a sucker!! for $129 dollars more that "person" could have to the same thing new in box or waited 2 weeks to buy the new iPad.

Sorry...just not true. The top iPad2 with 3G was fetching $700+...no clue where you live but that's just not true they were selling for half their value.

I felt a bit sheepish this morning when I looked at the Apple site and it still listed the black 32GB Wi-Fi models as being delivered on the 16th, I could have ordered one this morning instead of letting the online store rule my life for 2 hours yesterday.

Pfffft, took me almost 4 hours of raging and intermittent "Sorry the store is down while we update, be back soon" messages." I wouldn't mind so much if I wasn't able to get to the order page but it kicked me out at least 10 times right when I hit the Place Order button. So close to donkey punching my MacBookPro. Managed to get my 64GB AT&T model anyways.

Has anyone received shipping notifications yet? I ordered a AT&T 4g/32 GB around 4:45 ET and still at "preparing for shipment"

I see the shipping in the UK has gone to 2-3 weeks now!

Was just about the post the same thing:

Luckily I ordered mine before the shipping time changed!

Since (apart from white 16 and 64GB AT&T models), Apple's online store seems to be keeping up with demand, do you think we'll see smaller crowds on the 16th? With the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S it was a zoo for weeks (the latter in particular). I noticed when I cancelled my AT&T order and replaced it with Verizon (after the latter confirmed the availability of hotspot) that the pick-up in store option was available, but I opted out since the nearest stores for me are Grand Central, 59th, and UWS, all of which are loaded with tourists, particularly around product launches.

Preparing for shipment? Lucky you. I ordered around the same time and mine is still "Processing".

Do you not get free tethering on your network in the US?

I have a $30 unlimited data plan on AT&T in the US. In order to tether, I'd need to give up my unlimited plan and get a 3GB plan for $30, and then pay an extra $20 on top of it just for just the right to tether.
In short, give up my $30 unlimited and instead pay $50 for 3GB with tether.

Glad I got my 2 iPad order in. 1 for me. 1 for eBay! ;)

I was thinking about this and realized that because this was a world-wide launch there'd definitely be more units available then there were for the iPad 2 launch. Plus, pre-orders seem to be readily available for the most part so having to go the eBay/Craig's route might not be necessary for a lot of people.
