I can’t justify a new iPad just yet, but I think the existence of these puts me into a camp of iPad for portable computing plus a Mac Mini for home use. The laptop appears to be getting the axe when I do upgrade.

I love buying new toys as much as the next person, but what real life features will this iPad offer over a 3 year old model..
If you have a 2018 not a lot really. I spent some time debating if I should get a new one and I did but there really will not be a lot today for an average user like myself. I'm buying to a potential future and I made a mistake not buying cellular on my 2018. I considered the used market but decided in the end to invest in the future instead. Main thing will be the mini LED, M1 possibilities, and Thunderbolt. External storage options will be much more viable now with the increased speed.

I’m so glad I ordered within the first 10 minutes!

For those who wonder how this is worth what it is, realize that professionals pay thousands of dollars for color accurate monitors of equal or even smaller size. Using Sidecar makes this a very cost effective HDR reference monitor. Plus it has the full power of the M1 as a stand alone device. Plus it’s one of the very best drawing/illustration devices out there. Etc.

However if you have a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro, I’ll agree that you probably shouldn’t upgrade.

This is the first iPad Pro pre-order I’ve skipped out on since its debut. I’m going to wait it out (w/ my 2020 12.9) to see what Apple brings to the M1 iPad Pro at WWDC. Hopefully the next version of iOS for iPad will be a giant leap forward and take full advantage of the M1’s capabilities. Cheers and congrats to everyone who pre-ordered today!

GO GET UM BOYS!
Spend your hard earned cash and pay top dollar.
I don't need to spend that kind of money for an iPad Pro 12.9
Last years model still works for me.
Get a Mac mini for half the cost of an iPad Pro 12.9 and get a REAL OS and the same power.

How well does that Mac mini do for you when you want to sketch outdoors? Or do anything else outdoors? Or in a coffee shop? Or on a camping trip? Or on a plane? Or in your bed? Or basically anytime you want to do something away from your desk?

Different tools are for different jobs.

Came very close to pulling the trigger, but I’m sure I’ll be buying a 16” M2 MBP this year, so I decided to keep my powder dry and live with my perfectly great 2018 12.9” IPP. I also didn’t buy a new iPhone last year for the first time ever, so that my also be in my future this year.

I can't justify this until I get more information what the the iPad and iPadOS is going to do for Developers during WWDC - even a promise of being able to develop in XCode and Node.

I can still wait, although I really want to order it immediately, I'm hesitating. My M1 MBP is doing everything I need development wise, but I'd love to switch an iPad for light editing while on the road.
Same. An I’m still trying to convince myself I could downgrade to the 11” (have 2nd version). I really I could get t without the fancy screen - my eyes aren’t that grade.

so I’m borrowing my daughters MBP M1 to see how it works for me in everyday situations. Problem 1 this morning - it needed a bigger spot on my desk.

But bring on wwdc.

Well, he says he has last year’s model of IPP. Probably still able to draw on that.

Heck, i ink every day on an iPad Air 3 and it does fine.

Could never get me back to using the pen display attached to my Mac, though, because you just can’t rotate the danged canvas with your fingers.

It’s freakin’ medieval. No wonder Leonardo DiVinci died.

I've wanted to upgrade my 10.5 Pro, but despite being fortunate enough to have the disposable income, I couldn't justify it. I always said when the go OLED or Mini-LED I'd make the move, and I did. Fell into place as I wanted the 12.9 anyway. Had I not wanted the 12.9, I'd have waited again. I believe the 11 won't sell that well because people know a Mini-LED version is on the way. This 11 will be the iPad 3 of this generation, and I wouldn't be surprised if its superseded by the end of the year.

I don't understand why people flip out. If you get up early and check your local retail stores inventory I can all but guarantee you will have options for in-store pickup.

Is it as convenient as it arriving at your door? No, but it is a lot less foolish than going for a 2TB just because you want it a few weeks sooner and don't want to grab one on launch day.

Probably so, I just thought it ridiculous to equate the iPad Pro with the Mac mini.

True. You actually still need both these days, because each sucks at what the other does well.

May change one day. Some day. Far, far into the future when civilization has been wiped from the face of the Earth.

Or maybe this year!

I was thinking about trading in my 2018 iPad Pro on a new one but was on the fence of purchasing now or waiting to see what they announce about iPadOS at WWDC. My choice just became easier and I saved a bunch of money at the same time. :)
