nice design, amazing display, sleek finish and fast usage. It should be noted that I upgraded from a 1st generation iphone, so for me this is quite a big change.
-Signal Issue: yes, see below
-Yellow Blotches: none
-Proximity Sensor: ok
-Camera flare: none
So overall quite nice. Havent tried facetime or the video camera yet but since there were no apparent problems I am just gonna assume that it's all good. Would like to give more details on the antenna. I did the same thing as andatech and my ip4 is now showing the actual dB signal strength instead of the bars and here are my conclusions:
-I can replicate the deathgrip, although not everytime I try
-Signal drop of the grip varies, sometimes signal drops by 10dB, sometimes by 30 db
-it is interesting to note that my general signal (phone flat on table) is worse than with my 1st gen iphone. my old phone showed -51 to -60, whereas the ip4 shows -70 to -89 (exact same location and circumstances), both still full 5 bar signal
-Initially, I was not really worried about the antenna, because I thought my coverage is quite good (-51) so the deathgrip would actually not affect me at all.
Mapping my tests to the below chart I actually get mixed results:
Good Reception:
-Leaving the phone flat on the table I get -70 (5 bars)
-Holding the phone lighly in my hand I get -87 (5 bars)
-Holding the antenna gap normally I get -101 (4 bars)
Conclusion: I am not affected by the signal issue
Medium Reception:
-Leaving the phone flat on the table I get -85 (5 bars)
-Holding the phone lighly in my hand I get -97 (4 bars)
-Holding the antenna gap normally I get -110 (1 bar)
Conclusion: I am affected by the signal issue. With bad reception the deathgrip results in -113 or sometimes no signal
Haven't made any calls yet (haha can you believe it?

) so I dont know if any calls are dropping. With medium reception I could potentially still make calls without any problems at -100 to -110, yet this would only show one bar. I am in fact a lefty but somehow hold the phone on the upper part while using it for calls. Given this and the fact that I mostly have good reception (02 in central london area), I will hold on to the phone and belive this will not be an issue for me. But I do believe that all phones are affected in the same manner due to the antenna design of the phone, so to fix this properly apple would need to do more than just changing the bar signal map with a software fix. Design Flaw? Maybe... asking customers to purchase a "soft fix" (bumper) to make a phone work is absolutely unacceptable business practise. They shouldve then sold the phone with a disclaimer that the chosen antenna design may not work for you.
Hope this helps.
