All you small phone acolytes need to go away and stop complaining. Either you get what Apple is offering or you don't. Go seek your 4" phone elsewhere. There are other non-iPhone options that fit the bill for you.
Quite frankly it's getting annoying reading thread after thread about this. If there was a substantial demand (no you don't represent the populous sorry!) for a 4" iPhone Apple would be on it. Unless of course you think you know more than Apple.

Alright everyone, pack up your things. Apple is perfect, and there's no room for improvement anywhere.

My wife is 5' 2" and 125lbs. She has a iPhone 6 Plus. She doesn't have any issues using it at all. In fact she thinks the iPhone 6 is too small. To each their own. But, as many have pointed out you are in the minority. It's a fact products are market driven, and larger display phones are in demand. Smaller display phones are not.

Most men don't carry purses.

Another thing to consider: from all we know, the design team is rather small.
Maybe the "design-language" of the iPhone 6 does not translate that well into a smaller phone?
And nobody wants to go out and throw resources at designing a "perfect" (and we all know: less-than-perfect doesn't leave the labs of Mr Ive. Ever.) 4" phone, when
- it won't sell like hotcakes (a given)
- because it can't be too cheap (or else it would cannibalize sales from 6 and 6S phones)
- and it can't be too expensive either
- isn't a "new" phone at all

Maybe Jony wasn't too happy with the 5C to begin with....

I'm not mad at Apple for not releasing a smaller phone.
After all, we know there's only a limited number of "new" phones per year per vendor that the market can actually absorb.
So, the two new phones per CY are probably the limit anyway - add a 3rd and "people on the street" get confused.
Because you and me, we can perfectly understand that a "new" phone with the innards of last year's phone isn't going to perform as well as the other, larger "new" phone, unveiled at the same day. And it isn't really "new", either.
But try to explain that to grandma and grandpa. Or just mom and dad.
And Apple Stores get a lot of those customers - sometimes even from foreign countries that barely speak the local language but try to buy an iPhone...
(Apple Store employees: you have my sympathies)

I'm not mad at them - just a bit sad.

Anyone else agree that iPhone 7 should revert back to a smaller design? Maybe the whole 6 and 6+/6S and 6S+ fiasco could be remembered as a slight hiccup in the trend of otherwise beautiful, intricate iPhone designs.

Absolutely not. I just switched back to my old iPhone 5 (husband's current) so I could sell my 6+ before my 6s+ arrives. I can't believe my husband actually uses this thing. The keys are tiny, no wonder he's been so frustrated with it. Poor guy! I can't believe I ever used and loved this thing. I feel so sorry for him having to try and find these itty bity keys, I just bought him a 6.

fwiw: not sure physical size has anything to do with anything. I'm 5'2', 105 lb. My sister is 5'2, 95 lb. She has the 6+ too. I might be able to deal with a 6 if I had to, but I can't wait for the next 4 weeks to drag by before I can use a sensible size phone again.

Oh please what you're suggesting is not an improvement. You're simply confusing your own personal opinion as what the general populous wants. This forum is not the general populous.

But hey whatever. Keep holding your breath, maybe next year you will all luck out. Who knows.

You're right. This is ridiculous. Apparently no one is allowed to say that maybe Apple doesn't provide the perfect solution every time. It's not about dropping the phone. It's about my preference. Though I CAN use a 4.7" phone, I prefer a 4" phone. WHY CAN NO ONE HAVE A PREFERENCE??!

You're username seems to fit. Sounds like you'd be faithful to Apple if they make a life raft out of 10 pound weights.

I don't have a problem with preference and I was not attacking your personal preference honestly but I was however stating MY OPINION. And MY OPINION is that .7 of an inch is ridiculous to be crying over. You can have that preference all day, but I just think it's silly. No need to attack my username. That's also silly. But I guess that's just my opinion again as well.

Ok - Fair enough - That's you. We all just would like options that fit our needs best.

What you don't understand is Apple usually doesn't give many choices or options for their ecosystem of products. If your desires don't align with Apple's too bad. I think Steve Jobs once said customers don't know what they want. I'm not saying he is right, just that that is what the culture at Apple HQ thinks.

Haha, I guess to each their own, huh?

That's something that I've seemed to notice, though -- smaller people (girls in particular) prefer the bigger, larger phones.

For me, I just look at it from Apple's original philosophy, I guess. Phones are different devices from tablets or laptops. Therefore, I don't think that a HUGE screen is a "feature" for future phones, but rather a hinderance. I approach this conflict from Steve Jobs' point of view. The factor and form of a phone should become more and more intricate as time passes. In my opinion, the iPhone 5/5S had the perfect design for a phone. I'm not even entirely sure if it's a screen size issue for me as it is a design issue. I just wasn't impressed with the 6/6S's design. The rounded edges, I wasn't feeling. The 6+ and 6S+ as well. Although, I guess for someone who uses their phone as an all-around device (or at least as a tablet replacement) then, these things matter.

But I'm in the camp of people who would much rather prefer phones to be small, thin, and intricate. Neutral tones like black, white, grey, aluminum, glass, etc. and do away with the tacky gold and rosegold nonsense we see now (although space grey I like). I guess I'm just not adept to change :p

I have switched all over from different sizes of phones, and guess what, just like you got used to using a bigger phone, you get used to going back to a smaller phone. Most everyone here laughed at the Samsung Note saying that they'd never own a phone that big. No way they would carry it around. But then Apple gave it to them, and they got used to it. I really don't believe one is a "better" experience than the other. What you keep is all about usage preferences.

Me....done with phablets and bigger phones. I have computers, HTPCs, tablets, etc for that. Give me something small, portable, durable and fast. iPhone 5s fits this 100% for me. And don't feel sorry for me, really.

My girlfriend is in your situation (kind of)... She's an Android fan though. And trying to find a good Android phone in the smaller size is at least possible, even if the selection is very very limited. I think there's an S5 mini and an Xperia mini (from a big player perspective), and neither of these are readily available through the carriers (up here in Canada, at least).

For me, I'll be coming back to the Apple fold after using my Samsung S5 for a year. I'll be going to the slightly smaller than I'm used to 6s, I think. The 6+ just seems like it might be too much. It's not like I wear skinny jeans or anything, but even in slacks, the Samsung doesn't always sit well.

Apple is usually pretty shrewd in giving people what will sell best. If they thought they could sell enough smaller phones to make it worthwhile re-tooling the phone, they likely would. But as it is, it would likely only cannibalize from the bigger phone, so you'd have marginally higher sales for the development cost of 3 phones. Maybe when the 5s is no longer viable, they'll come out with another "6s Mini" or something. Something they can build once, and have it last a few generations. But you'll likely always be behind on technology.

I'm already, with a 4S.
But you're right in that my 4S is already written off (technically, I got it for free from the carrier anyway).
Having got to buy a new phone (and it's likely only be marginally cheaper than what the full retail price of the 5S is now, if at all) that is not "current" feels a bit strange.
I have to see how well iOS9 actually works on the 4S.
