You wear me out. Are you somehow defending the way apple has mismanaged the mac line in the past couple of years?

I'm simply pointing out what you have jumped to a highly unlikely conclusion. When supposing earlier that others were moved by emotion in these matters, you may have overlooked yourself.

It's hardly an 'emotional' conclusion that Apple has been neglecting the mac, and doesn't seem to care. Many tech journalist and thousands of mac users have observed the very same thing.

From that third article, which was written after the event which announced your beloved 2016 macbook pro: "Evidently, we are to take Apple’s silence on other Mac matters as a statement of steadfast indifference."

And finally there's Macworld - looking ahead to 2017:

You seem to have recovered that energy you lacked to face the facts about the differences between the 2015 and 2016 MBPs! Funny how that works.

Whether Apple has neglected the desktops isn't what's at issue, though that too is a questionable notion, as we don't know what they're working on. Again, here's what I took issue with:

I just hope Apple keeps making them - since the writing on the wall suggests theyre trying to phase them out.

Whatever dude. Enjoy your new touchy bar toy.

Neglecting macs like this is how they phased out monitors and airport ectremes: just let the old models rot without updates then cancelled them once sales had become (understsndably) abysmal

Facts make no impression on some minds, evidently.

There were already others making monitors and wi-fi equipment suitable for the Apple environment. Not so with desktop machines.

Here's a fact you can't seem to digest: The 2016 MBP is only marginally better (if at all), in any metric that matters to most people, and it costs a ....ton more money.

So getting back to the original question at hand, buying a 2015 model, especially at a discount, is a fantastic option for a whole bunch of people.

No, that's flatly false, as I indicated above. There's an almost 50% improvement in screen brightness and contrast, for example, not at all marginal, and that's something that matters to most people. A lot of people care about the speakers, Touch ID and battery life (15") too. But you were focused on work flow, so I showed how there were more than marginal differences there too. You could just accept these facts, but it appears you're determined not to.

Huh!!?!? This is pretty well documented. When most of the mac line is several years old, and even your preciouis macbook pro took a year and a half to update ... apple seems to be sending a pretty strong message: They don't really care that much.

This isn't the late 90s or early 2000s anymore people. The fact that Intel's newest processors are only, what 25% better than ones released 3 years ago is proof of that. You used to be REALLY HURTING in the late 90s or early 2000s even if your computer was a year old. I can run Windows 10 on a system that came out back in the Vista days. I was able to have 8GB of RAM back in 2006. My line of work did not change, even when dealing with 1080p footage. I am still able to get by with 8GB of RAM.

The 2013 Mac Pro is still the best system available for FCPX work, despite being 3 years old. A 3 year old computer, even a 7 year old computer, is still VERY VERY GOOD with today's software (my 2010 Mac Pro can still handle my FCPX workflow). Even an 11 year old computer is good for some people.

Agreed. Just look at the videos comparing video production between the 2015 and the 2016 systems!

There comes a point where enough is enough, there is no way you can put a point across to some people, you can only hear if you listen. I unignored some members, saw a point about marginal improvement of brightness and loud speakers and put back to ignore :)))

Oh, the irony! Yes, there is no way you can put a point across to some people, and you can only hear if you listen. So you ignore (or misread) whatever point you don't care to hear! It's curious how many persistent critics here fit that profile.

So I have a question. I have an opportunity to buy a 2016 non touch bar 13" with 2.0 i5, 8gb, and a 512GB with FCPX for $1,475. My second option is a 2015 13" with a 3.1 i7, 16bg, with 512gb with AppleCare until 01/2019. for $1,600. I am completely torn...I have not had a chance to see the new version, as I live in an area that doesn't sell any Macs. I had a 2013 15". I mainly use my machine for surfing the web, emails, docs, and maybe some very light photo/video editing. Nothing demanding whatsoever. I every once and a while will connect a usb and that's about it. I am a bit bummed about the new version not offering optical through the audio jack, as that is how I connect my amp. But I am sure I could just use a usb-c to usb and connect that way. Anyhow...I am completely torn on these two, any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Either will work great for your needs. The 2015 has an edge in CPU and RAM, where as the 2016 has an edge in SSD speed (and likely iGPU?) However, it seems unlikely that you would see a very big difference between the two in your day-to-day usage, in my opinion.

For you reading pleasure: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-have-ever-owned.2028384/page-2#post-24214660

This one of many threads I have read here on macrumors about this latest machine. Many posts from those, like you, who at first swore by the 2016 mbp.

Then there's the threads about the accidental input from the too-large trackpad, the battery issues, the problems with dongles not working correctly, touch ID flakey.

You called this the 'best computer ever' or something like that. I call BS.

Most people are having no such issues. Again, facts just don't matter here. I've given you facts that you resolutely ignore, while misdirecting to other points that in no way answer what I've actually said. There are people here who don't like the changes in the new machines for whatever personal reasons, which is fine, and for whom no contrary reason or evidence can be absorbed, which isn't so great.

Ironically, youre also talking about yourself with that last statement

Is this a used or refurb machine? Cause I've made up my mind that I want to go with a 2015 and am trying to figure out where to get one. Seems like the best new 2015 you can get are on B&H and Adorama? New that machine is is 2200 on B&H? I can't find any refurb.

If I could get that deal I would jump all over BTW.

I tried out the new 2016 at Best Buy. Don't want touch bar - I want function keys for After Effects, but then you only get 2 USB-C - which is just absolutely crazy. I'm going to be constantly hooking this thing up to an ext monitor for Adobe CC working and video when I'm not in a coffee shop. Also - the keyboard in fact does suck an egg on the 2016. Other than USB-C and keyboard tho - it's a beauty of a laptop.

The BB special on the ntb-2016 is pretty tempting... (now I'm playing Devil's advocate!)

If you did go 2016 non-TB model, it sounds like you would benefit from a USB-C or TB3 hub or even a charging hub. You would be able to connect just one cable to your Mac, and this cable would handle power + all peripherals and monitors. In that sense, it could be even more convenient than the previous design (but with the downside of having to purchase the hub.)

Get back to me in 2 or 3 more generations of macbook pro's, and you might have a better case to make that buying a 2015 model, with the huge price savings, isn't a pretty good idea :)

Ha, unless Apple pivots and Intel gets head smacked then 3 generations will be 7 to 9 years and we will need a magic 8 ball for that prediction. ;)

Get what you can afford. 2015 and 2016 excellent machines.

I'd also recommend a 2015 refurb

I say get what you like. I got the 13 nTB from BB for $250 off, so if you wait for that sale there isn't much diff between the 2015 and 2016 models. Spread that over 3 years of ownership, its really nothing. USB-C is great for docking, and the 13" is about the size of my wife's 11" MBA (two good reasons to go 2016). But if you really like the old 2015 model, I think its a solid choice and may be more reliable in some ways (jury is out how long the 2016 butterfly keys will hold up). Good luck!

Amazingly pointless thread, there is very little difference performance wise between any of the 13 inch machines mentioned.

The 2016 is "better" in every measurable way, but it really doesn't matter they are all small light powerful computers that will deal with most computing jobs with aplomb.

Buy whatever you want for whatever reasons you want, just make sure you have enough drive space and you'll be all good for the foreseeable future,

Better is subjective in this instance.

The 2015 price is better, some people may consider the older non-butterfly keyboard is better, others may think that the battery performance (given the reports of the new machine) is better and legacy ports may be better.

I'm not saying the 2015 is a superior machine but rather its not black and white.

That's why I said specifically in every measurable way, i.e. Not subjective.
