*checks own post count*
I'm at 4194 as of this post, and I've been here for over 4 years. I don't think it's that big of a waste of time considering all of the other things we could be doing to waste our lives. Of course, considering how many posts I've made to the Political Forums that don't count towards that 4194, I'm sure it's a lot worse. Not that I consider that a waste of time, but let's face it, it is. :p

To think, I could have gone out tonight to waste my time. But my friend kinda flaked. And now she's calling me stoned.

Which brings up an interesting point - would it then be possible for a member to achieve a negative post count? :p ;) :D

Sure, but on 64 bit systems it could take awhile! Even at your post rate...
 :D

i wonder since i havent read this whole thread is that those who want to raise it already have 500 while those who want it at 500 dont have that many yet.

thus i want to keep it at 500 since i am ever so slowly getting there

I don't think it should be raised. I'm having a hard enough time getting there as it is. I don't post in every thread just to post. I actually post in topics I'm interested in or if I can offer a good opinion.

Doing a quick head count of the member list there are about 1000 members who qualify or have reached 500 posts or "avatar status" so its not really as big a milestone as it once was, I would be curious as to the number of avatars say a year a go and wonder how many people have reached the 500 post mark in that 12 month period. With the amount of active posters those who I would consider veterans would have at least 2000-2500 posts. So I would suggest some new benchmarks be written, since its getting harder to see who has been here 6 months from 5 years.

How about instead of raising the avatar limit, you just add something to the persons title when they have been a member of the forum for over 4 years. Like it will say: [insertname] MacRumors 601 Veteran. Or something like that.

If you raise the avatar limit, pretty soon everyone will have 1000 posts and then you will want to jack it up to 2000

Well, technically, if you wanted to measure contribution, you'd probably be measuring the word count of a user's posts instead of number of posts... But that aside, I think the current system is fine.

It's rough enough to get to 500 posts without spamming. For most people, unless if you're really forum active / able to answer a ton of Apple-related questions, writing 500 well-thought-out posts will probably take at least a year.

Besides, if a 500-post minimum was fine four years ago, why isn't it fine now? That's like saying that there are too many successful people, and that there has to be some way of cutting down to make the remaining successful people feel more special.

Yeah, I agree - sort of a bell curve grading scheme. ;) I say just keep it the way it is. First of all, many Forums do not have any restrictions on avatars, so I think it's great this one does, and secondly, we're not here for avatars, we're here to be a part of the Mac community - who cares about avatars anyway? It's a picture under your name, big deal. I feel they get far too much focus as it is.

Yeah, we can't stop the forums from growing, and because there are so many people with avatars (and 500+posts) all it means is that the forum is growing, which is a good thing.

Not hardly, i remember posting for a avatar.. i was at 499 and i was really tried but i was like "No one more post" but after that i kind of stop caring about my post count, and with a Demi-God thing over it, i can't tell unless i look for it by clicking on my name.

Also i think 500 post is a good amount.. i think it takes some knowledge to make 500 post that stay on the boards, so i would say most people with 500 post know a great deal more about Macs then they did when they came

Agreed. And yes, once you become a Demi, it honestly doesn't matter anymore. Even if you're not a Demi, once you're a 601 or a 603, it doesn't matter either... ;)

Personally... I think post counts should be kept from members view. Rather than worrying about quantity we should be concerned with the overall quality of the posts. I was no more concerned with reaching 500 posts than I am about reaching 1000 or 10,000 posts. I post when there is something interesting to talk about, not to see if my post count is higher than the next person.

I couldn't agree more.

Yeah, me too. As I said above, once/if you become a Demi I think it helps, as then you don't have that ranking acting as a bit of a reminder all the time. I haven't checked my post count in ages, nor do I have any real desire to.

I've seen it served, rolled up under glass with olives attached with toothpicks, I've seen it fried to a simmering sizzle served hot, placed within a variety of tasty breads or rolls, served with mustard, mayonnaise, even sliced to conform to smaller tidbits of pastry. But baloney is baloney, just about any way you serve it. :D Couldn't resist, ~Shard~. jk

As long as you're joking, no worries. ;) :) FWIW, I was being sincere though and not BSing. I don't know, perhaps when you get to a posting level like I'm at, it just becomes meaningless, hence why I don't check any more, or really care about it. I'm an active member of the community here and I guess that's the only way I look at things now. All that being said, I don't mind at all being the brunt of posting/spam jokes... I'm used to it... ;)

Thanks for taking it the right way. And I was sincerely kidding. A good percentage of what you post is either helpful, informative and/or just having good fun and that's what this is supposed to be in here, I believe.

Thanks, and no worries - if you can't take a joke and laugh at yourself sometimes, what fun is that? ;) :)

I think that we should have a system in which modsand special users designated by mods who are helpful contributing users on MR can rate posts on a scale from one to ten, and the rating of a post can be changed within 2 days of the time it was originally submitted or edited. Then, an avatar and user rank would based on point level.

Care to rate that many posts? Even at 10 seconds a rating, it would take you 44 weeks of non-stop rating to get to a number.

Plus, if your helpful posters are busy rating, then how can they be helpful?

Agreed - I think that would be way too complicated and administrative. The Forum would suffer paralysis by analysis.
