Until they can make wireless signals as reliable and as fast as a wired connection, that whole "fully portless" concept is absolutely ridiculous. Hell, I can't even currently do a wired file transfer from my computer to the Files app on my phone. Only way to natively move something across is through AirDrop or iCloud. AirDrop is incredibly unreliable when trying to move multi GB files, and I shouldn't have to wait for iCloud to sync.

They've been promising #3 for years. I don't even listen anymore.
I think you more accurately mean: Click seeking forecasters have been crystal-balling USB C for years.

My guess is Apple has been doing the math, and they know the e-waste generated by suddenly switching millions of iphone users to USB-C will be significant to say the least. The iPhone unit volume dwarfs all the other apple products transitioned to USB-C combined. I'm also guessing they hoped to nurse along the lighting port until they could just transition to a portless design. I'm also guessing the odds are greater that apple will admit that we are not ready for portless phones, and have to start switching to USB C soon.

My Next guess guess is that apple knows they need to make a generational leap in wireless charging tech while somehow making it affordable and backwards compatible with Qi/magsafe while also making lossless wireless audio openly available before trying to go portless. Apple has been playing chicken pitching the resistance to switching to USB-C against the advancements needed to go portless, and the prognosticators keep betting USB-C will win.

My final guess is that apple give users choice by softening the transition to USB C by putting it in pro models first, knowing there will be some more thrifty buyers of non-pro devices that would rather not be force to suddenly switch to USB-C when they need a new phone.

I’m predicting that the Pros will get 8K video recording which will mean a bump in storage up to 2TB, 8GB of RAM, and Thunderbolt instead of just USB-C. Only the Pro Max will get a periscope lens.

The regular iPhone 15 will get just USB-C and a hand me down A16.

I don’t see TouchID coming back.

For me 5s, Xs Max. Haven’t decided in the 14 or not yet. I upgrade when needed and not to get the latest and greatest though when I do update it is to the latest and greatest.

iPhone 16 pro max according to the rumour mill, will be the first iPhone to do away with the Face ID cameras, and the first step to a full screen iphone.

This has got me more sold than dynamic island & periscope lens.

the 15 will also have a major chassis redesign. Apple does this every 3 years.

2014 -> 2017 -> 2020 -> 2023

My guesses for the 15 pro: probably some sort of titanium frame or other new material. And they will make the camera lenses protrude from the phone itself like the s22 ultra instead of from that shiny square where they currently sit. Camera lenses won't be flush though. Maybe also a redesigned speaker area and then of course the usb c. Hopefully...

Also, Ming Chi has come out and said that the 15 pro max is supposed to be very different from the 15 pro. Mark German says apple will make the 15 pro max a 15 "ultra". Assuming the 15 pro max/ultra is the only one to get the periscope camera, it might have 4 lenses on the back unless apple builds the periscope into one of the existing lenses, so another drastic change there in terms of design. First phone with 4 lenses on the back. Kind of interesting to think about this stuff

Wow, what a disappointing article. I was fully expecting to see some iPhone 16 rumors by now.

If I weren’t a med student I’d have bought the 14 Pro Max and the Watch Ultra…so I went with Watch Ultra because my Series 5 is in need of replacing much more so than my 13 Pro.

So, I literally have had every iPhone iteration since the very first one in June of 2007. I always chuckle when people are like, "I'm waiting for the iPhone 16!", guess what? I am too :p
Same here 😊 . Waited in line for the first few as well until they did away with that. Sometimes I look back and wonder why we did that... but always had fun doing it. Met lots of cool people. We knew something big was happening, something different.

If I remember correctly, the first iPhone (Edge) was a 5PM PST launch. A large group of us rolled up at 8AM when the mall would let us start lining up. The guy in front of us made a deal where he took off and saw a movie, and then my gf (now wife) and I saw one after. Watching each others spots.

I think releases moved to mornings after that and we would do overnight stays at ATT stores. Bring a truck and have sleeping bags in the truck bed, music, food, booze. Always a good time with good people.

The iPhone 15 Line up will be the best iPhone Apple will ever work on.

I hope Apple uses Titanium Chassis. Please make it happen, Apple. Make the Pro models more exclusive like the Apple Watch Ultra.
Give us the iPhone 15 Hermes edition. I have no shame and would buy a $3k mobile device.

14 is not even in stores yet. News about Apple are getting really click hangry, and even more silly. Hows your iPhone 16 you cant even imagine yet.

I just ordered a 14 Pro, I have a 13 Pro at the moment, a waste of money? Yes, of course it is but I can afford it and if the iPhone 15 is that "wow" worthy, I will do the same again. One doesn't know how long one is going to be on this earth and if we are frightened to buy now because there may be a "killer" upgrade next time, we will wait forever.

No point calling me a fool for upgrading a year old phone. I already know it.
No you are not a fool - upgrading every year specially now its almost a no cost proposition with carriers falling over themselves with great deals

That's the one I've been waiting for while holding onto my XS Max. I finally caved and preordered the 14 Pro Max today. The improvements since I bought this in 2018 are too great to keep waiting around, so I guess Apple wins. If TouchID returns next year, I'll be buying a new iPhone again.

A counter argument against waiting is that having removed the physical SIM card slot in the US they may remove it elsewhere as well in the next model. I had thought about waiting for a model with USB-C, but I need a physical SIM card slot.

Periscoping camera? 🤦🏼‍♂️
Nothing exciting in mobile phones for a decade.
Mobile phone companies are conning people.

For me this is a huge upgrade. I don’t see holding out for anything that’s a to die for feature for a while. The always on display and dynamic island is going to make the 14 pro pretty future proof. I’d love under screen Touch ID but Face ID isn’t really an issue with how much faster it’s gotten since the iPhone X.
