TO ME, THIS IS THE BIGGEST NEWS EVER (the rest of the interview/article is mostly just regurgitating already known stuff). Wow, Tim talks about how long he will remain as CEO. I wonder who will be next in line (I know, probably Jeff Williams). Nevertheless it will be so interesting to see where Apple will head and how this CEO transition will play out. Really really surprising and amazing stuff.

This also puts into question how Tim's current AR plans and the grand scheme of things will proceed once he is out. Time will fly, and he will only be here for a few more generations/years of iPhone. I really wonder what the next big thing is going to be. There are so many exciting projects (AR glasses, Apple Silicon transition continues, Apple Car etc) on the horizon

Good points but I think it was always on the table that TC won’t run this forever.

It’s also likely not “his” plans but those of the entire company. The grand scheme didn’t change with Jobs leaving, I’m expecting the same for Cook’s departure.

Because people would do something stupid, get themselves in a mess and then be all over social media blaming Apple, which would potentially damage their image (which they are fiercely protective of)

Apple have always taken a “we know best” approach with iOS whereas Google have been more pragmatic with Android.

I can see arguments for both approaches but I do believe Apple should be able to apply the rules they want on the platform they developed: if a user wants more freedom and control, there are plenty of other phones on the market
Nonsense. It's about power & control over iOS. Macs exist just fine with the ability to sideload apps.

In my opinion, Mac users usually are more experienced and the OS itself is much more complex; the freedom it has simply can not be reproduced in iOS without putting the entire ecosystem in risk. We all know how it works in Android and what people usually make and end up getting in the end. But hey, it’s nice to discuss it; some great ideas might surprise us.

The biggest lie is how Apple connects collecting a percentage on app sales to app security. There's nothing which prevents Apple from offering the same app approval process but one that ends with the developer being allowed to distribute the app themselves rather than through Apple's App Store. They can call it "Certified by Apple" and charge a flat fee for the certification to cover their costs and allow for a reasonable profit as well.

Dear Tim,

Sideloading apps would primarily break App Store revenues and its de facto monopoly, you know it, we know that you know, and you know that we know that you know it.

The fact that Bitcoin scams pass through the App Store review like air passes through a sieve, speaks volumes about the quality and security of your infrastructure.

Now pull the other one, it's got bells on.
Why do people say monopoly to everything? It is how iOS works, don't like it? Pick Android, simple as that. Would you let someone else selling products for free in your store? Can you go to Costco and start selling your products there? If they say you cannot, calling it a monopoly? No, way! Don't like it? Go somewhere else, it's not the only one. We don't need another "Android".

Android has bitcoin scam apps everywhere! I am into cryptos and see often people reporting new fake apps that try to steal your cryptos. Why is no one talking about it? As far as I know, Apple has had 1 case only, why is that? Because it's not open like Android. Better 1 or a few cases rather than a hundred or thousands each year! The person who downloaded and gave the recovery phrase did not do proper DD. Just downloaded the app and gave the recovery phrase. The reason why people buy hardware wallets (Trezor) is to not store the private key somewhere like a PC or Mobile to avoid being hacked. Their apps don't ask for the recovery phase, they connect using the device. What's the point of cold storage if you need to insert the recovery on your phone? If you fall for things like that, means it's your fault. I always double-check everything and every time. People with 600k should triple-check everything they do. And hot just randomly trust.

If they let users sideloading apps, it will be worse. They are already blaming on Apple when they should've done more research instead, imagine later.

So anything to back that up as to why not? Any other suggestions who should have been made CEO? If u r going to throw out these big statements u need to back them up sir
That’s not the way it works, make a broad stroke general statement and leave.

But Apple is in a bunch of battles and the court of public opinion on some issues.

Epic is fighting this lawsuit for one of their majority stakeholders - Tencent. Tencent wants an App Store on your devices. I don’t want them polluting what has worked fine all these years.

Developer payment rates and Apple’s cut taken from them I do agree need some adjustment but keep the mobile garden walled. Security is a major concern here.

Remember most of the accounts here posting in favor for side loading are paid shills for Coalition for App Fairness.
I use sideloading to jailbreak 🥴 or put an emulator on my devices. Nice try though

There is absolutely nothing stoping all the people here hating on Apple to go use the myriad of Android phones. Hell, you can even buy a super expensive one that is even more expensive than an iPhone Pro, if that's the flex you want to have.

What am I saying, most of the people here complaining are probably people that don't even use Apple products anyway. Do Apple people go to Android specific websites and complain about Android and Google? Just curious.

Had to install my preferred VPN program on wife's iPhone. Even with a unique App name it was frightening to have to sieve thru all the lookalike programs hoping to fool me to make in install. There are so, so, so many sketchy developers in the App store. It is frightening. If one makes a mistake, gets fooled by an dark pattern it can mean $500 lost to a fraudulent subscription program. Apple STILL HAS NOT done anything to protect users from this. Hope the developer currently suing Apple on a suit related to this gets to go to trial and lets us have some insights about how much profit Apple makes from not protecting users from fraudlent apps. Amazon does the same. So hard to find a trusted branded product given the hundreds of Chinese lookalikes. Apple == Amazon Tim. THINK ABOUT THAT.

Can you back up your claim that "most of the people here complaining are probably people that don't even use Apple products anyway".

Yea, thats what I figured.

One possible interesting outcome of this would be to allow alternative OSes on iPhones(Apple support for a boot loader). Apple would basically relegate “third party app stores” to a super-fringe minority who would install a second OS. The only reason I see this as slightly possible is because the AppleSilicon Macs are extremely similar to iPhones and supporting Linux on the M1 would be a good idea for everybody. Other OSes likely would not have accelerated graphics and be mainly used by geeks.

What is a lie? Privacy and security are not binary and never 100%? What is the percentage that apple collects for "app security?" Can you point to it? Do you think the entire ecosystem will be more secure if app loading was essentially a free-for-all?
