60 posts with 16 pages of totaling of varied discussion. How did you figured that out 😂 I don’t even know what to say to that 😵‍💫.

Couldn’t catch up or read every single post but what’s the main argument that is being made?
Basic rundown - open environment is inherently less secure than a closed system. Giving examples of grandparents getting scammed and dealing with downloaded exes/dmg files so I moved them over to iPad where there is always at least one or two downloaded exe file from Safari when I look. If side-loading becomes an option, it will be common for the app to be downloaded instead of an exe. And the page will have instructions on how to enable side-loading to run the "free video player" app.

Yes, my grandparents even followed a website instructions to get out of Windows 10 S mode to install something. Yet they forget my teachings about running random programs and don't fill in your private information. Elderly has hard time remembering some details, but if a page outlines instructions they can follow, they can do that just fine.

The specific MR member has unrealized fears for their senior family members security and potential to be scammed if Apple were to permit side loading apps even if a toggle and message was implemented.

Chicken little situation, nothing more. If Apple says it, then it must be true there is no conflict of interest related to benefitting financially. Nothing to see here it’s all good, it’s Apple folks.
I appreciate your response. Thanks for bringing me up to speed.

Would you stop being so condescending. Unrealized fears.....REALLY? You know my situation?

Holy smokes people. I have HATED Apple for many things. But this I agree with. And you just label me as someone that just blindly agrees with ANYTHING apple does?

Please.....stop being condescending.

Yet you are fine with all the cameras and microphones on your iPhone, iPad, AppleWatch, AirPods, Alexa, etc being active all the time. iOS has security holes at present, don’t fool yourself into believing otherwise.

I checked my reply I couldn't find where I said I was fine with it. Plus I don't own most the devices you mentioned above. Sure you could mitigate the risk with few extra steps.

Your grandparents are able to follow directions provided to them from websites to adjust system settings but refuse or forget what you have instructed them on multiple occasions. I am not sure who is being bamboozled.

If step by step instructions are there on the screen right now, you can follow them. But remembering what I taught them a week or so ago is a lot more difficult.

You do know elderly don't have a great memory right? They have told me the same story three days in a row sometimes. Even started it with "I never told you this but...."

Apple does not officially permit side loading. It can presently be done and I have done so as there are many sites that even provide instructions on how to do so. Given the fact that your grandparents are able to follow directions to disable or enable windowsOS settings to install apps, and have not done so with iOS. So yes, I would call this unrealized fear.

To sum it up:

Just because you have elderly relatives who, at their age, are unable to comprehend basic internet security principles, and are unable to operate their devices without permanent risk of compromising security, you want the bar set so low and demand all other iOS users to embrace this, without a choice. And you call others who want the choice selfish.

I bolded the important part - Because the side-loading setting is not on iOS until this bill passes?! And iPad CANNOT launch EXE files no matter what setting get offered here. What setting exactly do you expect my grandparents to set to run exe files?

Its called thinking about the future and what WILL happen when iOS opens up. Its not unrealized. Its realistic. Android suffers from malware, iOS will too with greater numbers than just the slipped through apps.

Embrace what?! Its been this way for 10 years now, since iPhone and App Store first came out. And there is a choice - Android.

Its in fact the opposite - you are asking those of us that WANT a walled garden to embrace side-loading and all the risks that come along with that - when apparently as posted earlier less than 1% of Android users side-load.

Gotcha. So the App Store review process is basically a joke.

But at least the App Store can boot scam apps from the store when they are detected.

Good luck trying to get a scam app website booted from the web. ?

I can't wait to hear all the stores about the next fad word game that is only available via sideloading... but it's just a front-end for stealing people's passwords and contacts.

Fun times ahead!

:p
It’s even worse than that. They for example had “pulse measuring app” return multiple times skirting the reviewers that every time user put their thumb on the toutchID they payed for a subscription Unknowingly

If you are concerned about they digital security, maybe a connected device to the internet is not the answer. Download some games for them to play or videos when you are there. It’s like providing a potential weapon to a cognitively diminishing person and wonder what happened when that person hurts themselves or others.

They can't keep in touch with all the children, grand children and everyone else - as in Facebook. They NEED Facebook!

Which I personally don't get. I stopped using Facebook 6 years ago.

I got scammed by my Nigerian prince, no internet and digital devices for me ?

Well, if Apple is finally forced to allow sideloading in the near future, there will be a choice for you too - the dumb phone.
Then we agree that side-loading limits choice. Because I want Apps on my phone, but only the walled garden environment. I have said before, I prefer Android in every other way except it is not a walled garden. iOS is a complete joke in many ways compared to Android.

You and I understand this and know its a joke, but there are people that don't know that.

Reminds me of this funny video I watched a while back.

iOS is a complete joke in many ways compared to Android…..”

One could make the same counter argument in the same context. My biggest gripe with android, isn’t so much necessarily the platform itself, it’s the security measures that they don’t have on par with the likes of Apple. That’s how it’s always been and they’ve never caught up.

IPA files can be side load today and have been for awhile, it’s not some unheard of trick. Actually instructions and stores exist at present and for sometime. You believe even if iOS is opened one can open an “.exe” file, realize how daft that is as an “.exe” cannot be opened on macOS. You seem to be confusing windowsOS and it’s executable file system.

You mentioned you were an IT person???

Now I'm totally confused. I thought we're talking privacy and security matters.
Yeah, you said they shouldn't use a connected device. I said they need to because they need facebook. Correct me if I am wrong, but to use facebook it needs to be a connected device.....no? ?

Why choose loneliness? Just use an alias and good browser with uBlock Origin for FB which I find valuable for social events, group discussions, marketplace, etc.
