There are two ways to side load IPA at present one is the expensive way by using a Mac the other is via the internet. It literally takes a minute or less to do it now. The problem is it is not permanent, only a week or up to a year.
Well just re-install the app every week worst case. There you go, Apple doesn't need to open there is a good workaround if you want to side-load.

What I don’t understand is why people here roaring about there iOS device. Yet don’t roar about how MacOS can sideload. I don’t see you guys complaining how you want MacOS closed up with no side loading?
Apparently no concern while banking on macOS but big concerns when doing so on iOS, go figure twisted upside down logic at play. Plus roaming around with location being tracked but the same people don’t mind using Google and Facebook, once again it defies logic.

I also have elderly people who would not be able to reload the IPA every week and would prefer an open system.

I don't bank on macOS, I do all of that on my phone. My phone also knows everything about my health and my Mac does not. My phone also know where I am at all times, and I don't take my mac with me to the store or doctors. iPhone has a lot more data than mac does.

Right now there is a choice open (Android) vs closed (Apple). This bill removes that choice, it will be open and open. Your elderly people can go Android while I would forever be stuck with a less secure iOS by being open.

Completely inaccurate.

Sideloading would still be sandboxed and can be done exceptionally safely

Exactly. Further more, as a compromise, Apple could retain approval over the alt-App Stores themselves.

If an “alt-App Store” was found to be distributing malware or not meeting certain quality/editorial standards, Apple could pull the distribution certificates for that store.

Wait... isn't the point of sideloading and alternative stores so that Apple isn't controlling the developers or the stores?

?

If you have iCloud backup/sync then your Mac also knows all this information. Most people leave those options default which guess what even your iMessages are not secure if it has backup enabled.

Nope, I intentionally disable all of that on my Mac. My mac is for work, not my personal/financial/health details to sync to it.

Because they're used to iOS being closed now imagine iOS allowed sideloading since its inception and that now Apple suddenly decided to close it you'd see the same kind of roaring because they can't update their favorite sideloaded app anymore. 😆

Wait when MR drops this news "Apple working on disabling sideloading on macOS 14, says it'll protect users from ransomeware and scams" ;)

Ad blockers won't hide sponsored shiny FB scam ads, which got links to a scam websites which sell magic pills and devices, and ask for your credit card numbers and stuff.
Seems to me Facebook is the issue when the MR member is more concerned with side loading iOS app, the upside down logic being used is mind boggling.

Personally, I would be for it, but it will never happen. Not really the exact same but similar, I was hoping Windows 11 would have gutted all the legacy crap which would end up causing a lot of software to no longer work but that didn't happen. I can still run 2001 software on Windows 11.

Most people leave the default settings as is. Maybe Apple should turn it off by default to protect non-technical people.

MacRumors freaking out about Apple opening up iPhone.
Yet same Macrumors constantly freaking out that “Apple’s about to lock down the Mac!”
?

Agreed.

I've brought this up several times on the forum and the folks wanting iOS to be locked down never have a reply about it.
The way I see it. As a user. You make your device secure. Like when I use my pc with windows. I do shopping and banking and buying games. I don’t roar at Microsoft saying I want the OS closed down. Cause well it how Microsoft has the OS. Ultimately. We the users need to be careful to ensure our device don’t get virus and malware. I assume it’s the same with MacOS.

You do have a choice, you don’t have to install any apps outside the official unless you prefer. Option two, get a non-smart phone. You can also get an android phone and not install any app you are unfamiliar with or trust.

Probably bots or shill accounts.
I have said I would be for it. And I have given my opinions on why I think its fine if it doesn't happen. That fact that the iPhone does something the mac doesn't = make phone calls warrants a higher bar for security than a mac does. Imagine getting ransomware on your phone and can't dial 911 or can't call someone if your car breaks down.

This is just my opinion, we all have them. But a phone should be treated differently than a computer.
