That's news.. Conflicting information being given out here. I'm not sure what you're saying is true..

Only 6s/6s+ phones in the Apple upgrade program are unlocked. Any other 6s/6s+ purchase is locked. Meaning full price purchases are locked both from Apple and the carriers. If the carrier unlocks automatically, then you're good. ATT does not.

Not anymore. For now unlocked is reserved for the Apple upgrade program.

I looked up your original post about it here. You should always take what Apple reps online say with a grain of salt. They aren't officially allowed to call it "unlocked" because the carriers freak out. But it will be. As they have been. Or, as long as it's purchased at full price it can be unlocked by your carrier, which is the same thing. A carrier can not keep your phone, which is completely paid for, locked to their service.

Went pretty far up the line. But you are right, they cannot say things. But I suspect the phones will not be unlocked unless they are in that program. "Unlocked" is only posted there, and no "Unlocked" phones are otherwise offered.

As I was saying earlier, this is discussed to death every year. Every year, if you buy a full price phone from Apple, it comes to you unlocked. It's never advertised as unlocked. Never.

Apple's marketing for the new program and emphasizing "unlocked" is because it's the first time you can finance a phone and have it unlocked. That's really what it is. The case has always been that if you finance or subsidize a phone with a carrier, it is LOCKED until you've paid it off. If you buy full price, it's unlocked. Apple is changing the game by offering an unlocked phone with financing.

I think we might be able to do this this year. When I select a Verizon phone on the current website, I have the option of "pay in full". Now, I can't click past that until the 12th, but I am hoping I do NOT have to enter any carrier information in to complete that transaction.

Yeah, I also notice that. I hope they don't require a Verizon contract to purchase full price.

I called Verizon website customer service and they said I should be able to order a 6S full price device only without service on their website when it launches.

I hope that's true, but it is different than if you try to order a 6 now. When I checked online with the 6 just now, Verizon required a plan before I could check out.

Except unlocked phones are available to purchase through the Apple Store App:

I don't think this point is correct.
Whatever version you have apple won't ask you. They will just give you an unlocked one.

No, because I've had this happen to me. They will replace it with the same model number and AppleCare+ doesn't have international coverage.

Interesting situation: If you go to the Apple Store app to set up a favorite (so purchasing is quicker when pre-orders start), when it asks you to choose your carrier, T-Mobile isn't an option.
I don't see where you make a favorite in the App Store iPhone app.

Just tried it and it say T-mobile

but on their website I can select any carrier I want and select full price

Yes it does say T-Mobile, but it's an unlocked phone that can have any sim be put into it just like last years iPhone 6 that was available on launch day.

You can still pay full price on the app for any carrier

Yes that is true, but then you'll have to call that carrier to unlock it after you activate it. Purchasing the T-mobile version does not require the extra step.

PM me and I'll give you the page on the Verizon site where you can buy device only.

I just call the Apple Store And they told me all the full price iPhone 6s sell thru the Apple Store will come unlocked...

Can i trust them????

I just chatted with Apple Specialist and they said There will be no unlocked phones at release.

Yep, they said the same thing last time. There are no officially unlocked iPhones 6s/6s Plus devices from Apple currently, just like there wasn't last year at launch.

If you order the T-mobile phone it's unlocked. You can pay in full for the other carriers, but once you get the phone you'd need to call them to unlock it.

Verizon iPhones are unlocked. That's why I would prefer to get the Verizon version. It's the most compatible.

Please stop with the misinformation. There are unlocked phones. Scroll up to my first post on page 9. You'll see the screen shot of an unlocked phone you can purchase on the Apple Store app.
Just like last year.

I hate every year this same silly discussion and year to year it never changes. Full price device only from Apple is unlocked!

Yes, but you have to sign into a verizon account to purchase it (even at full price). Only the T-mobile one doesn't require an account login to purchase unlocked.

You can get the t-mobile iPhone without entering your carrier info at launch. It will at the very least be GSM unlocked (will work on ATT/tmobile). It will work with an active verizon SIM. No one can tell you for sure anything else. If it will work on verizon with a new line, etc. This is how it was last year.

The only way you are getting a full price phone from another carrier will be if that is your current carrier. If you have verizon you will be able to buy a full priced verizon iPhone, but if you do not have verizon you cannot buy their phone full price b.c you cannot get passed the carrier info screen. THIS PHONE WILL BE UNLOCKED

people are confusing SIM free and unlocked all over the place.

Unlocked means you can use it on a different carrier, SIM free contains all of the bands and any carrier will ACTIVATE it. SIM free seems like it will not be available at launch, unless you do the apple upgrade plan. Those sound like SIM free phones, but again no one is certain.
