Completely agree. Sure the pay check is nice but really has siri improved at all since 2011. It seriously needs the internet to set a timer....

Apple *really* needs the "V-series" chip now! It would give them the upper hand on on-device voice recognition. Not sure why they are still relying 100% on the cloud for this, as it's a serious hinderance. With Siri coming to Macs, it would also set Macs ahead in the computer race, too.

As if there is anything more mind blowing that the general public has access to at this point? If you have any further credentials on where the bar should be set, I'm eager to read your reply based on your hypothesis of Artificial Intelligence.

I don't have any credentials that would impress you. Just a guy who has worked in technology and as a writer and animator and illustrator. But I would imagine when one uses the word 'intelligence' one might expect something more than a shopping app that grabs data from a bunch of commercial sites and lets you buy more crap or make a dinner reservation. If I remember correctly early AI was actually interested in arriving at some model of how the human brain works. This was given up for the most part when folks realized there was money to be made making shopping apps. I'm glad you are happy with this. I hope it's a great new platform to buy stuff. I was just thinking using the words Artificial and Intelligence together might imply something a bit more dynamic, interesting and revolutionary. But I think that time has passed.

Siri, meet Viv.

I always thought the backwards roll with Siri was because of privacy conflicts. Apple is putting privacy on top which doesn't allow Siri to gather as much info as it would need to work any better. Could explain the backwards step in functionality too.

I never really use Siri because it's pretty worthless in it's current state.

Who is your "someone"?
The creators of Viv... who else?

They shouldn't have bought Siri if they knew they could not use it. That was a waste of money.

I find it mildly interesting.

Don't you have a better virtual assistant at your fortress of solitude?
I commend you on that clever comment, yes Kelix is infact more accurate but refuses to leave the fortress, so i'm stuck with Siri. ;)

Wonder if his new software will answer all the stupid questions some seem to feel the need to ask........
Is it unreasonable or stupid to ask siri where to bury a body? ;) She used to have a good answer for when that particluar question was asked, now she says, "let me check on that" then opens up safari about info or the definition of a bog. lol ;)

Siri is junk. I rarely use it. Needs internet for everything and just not worth the wait. Errors, errors, errors too

AI started off as alofty, self aware, Turin test passing entity. It was quickly changed into a marketing term for apps and games for 2 reasons:
1 it was catchy and boosted sales
2 they could not come up with a better name for a set of complex algorithms, so they called it AI.

If they want a company to work with they should stay away from Apple. Too many internal politics and it will get shoved in the conner somewhere and never see the light of day.

Does that mean that you have inside or first hand knowledge of this or are you just saying it because you can get away with saying such things on the Internet without any proof?

The reality is that Microsoft already beat them to the punch with Cortana already built in Surface and their Windows 10 laptops. Apple is still far behind. It doesn't matter if they put Siri on Mac OS X. To be ahead, they would have to completely beef up the AI's ability to comprehend words and request accurately, especially with complex sentences. The problem is that using a v-series chip, it would take up so much memory for the AI to acquire that much vocabulary and comprehension whereas, through the Cloud, it can translate from the servers. I know it's garbage and AI should be independent from such servers like the Cloud but it would probably take a long time for Apple to truly pull this off. It would also make the phone more expensive.

I'll give this a try since Apple will probably buy them anyway.

I can say that they wouldn't let Apple touch Viv. Hell to the NO. There is no point for Apple to buy Viv when they already blew off money on Siri from the same developers. Stupid move.

You'll give this a try and praise Viv. Not Apple. It's going to be multi-platform as intended by the developers. It won't be an iOS exclusive.

In fairness, they only tested Viv through ordering food. You and I and everybody else has no idea what Viv is capable of yet,
Only the creators. It's to early to determine its capabilities and how it can or it will assist us in our daily lives.

For example, approximately 8 months ago a man was working under his car when it fell off the jack and top of him, rendering him trapped. The Man said "Hey Siri" to his phone and requested She dial 911. Emergency responders arrived Shortly later and saved his life. I believe Macrumors posted this article.

A.I. may be useful in the right situations, given it doesn't have to be used for food ordering.

I don't know why she seems to have devolved...
But with my use of Siri in the past, she used to tell jokes, would actually almost debate with me on something or say snarky/witty comments, she was more accurate in doing what I asked and was able to do more tasks. I try the same thing on the 6s plus and she is constantly messing up not hearing what i say even if i'm an inch away, she also contantly says "i can't do that" on tasks she could do before, (all this despite software refreshes and iPhone iOS restores.) The same happens on my family's iPhone 6s'.... so i'm not boasting anything, only stating my personal viewpoint of what I think Siri was and now is like.. (again in my eyes.)
Glad your experience with Siri is good, mine and several people (including Apple Technicians, Best Buy Apple salesman, and family and friends) all have said and or agreed to having the same experiences as I have and am having.

Kal.

That's fine your Siri experience has been sub par, but Siri from then until today has changed a lot. If you have time, open YouTube and watch a few video's of the first iteration of Siri compared to today, galactic changes.

I can't contest to asking Siri jokes, as I use her for more
Useful tasks, such as; multitasking, scheduling, and editing. Maybe you haven't tested Siri or found the right tools to utilize her?

In any case, Siri has evolved immensley and give it another few years or so, when she will be integrated in your car and/or possibility of your home. Times are changing. Where we are today and technology, most iPhone users would not want to live without Siri. At least speaking from my perspective.

How could Siri be 'Handy' and 'Smart' a few years back, but not today? As compared to the past, Leaps and bounds have improved for Siri. She's not perfect, but your statement does not boast anything of why Siri is far less superior from then until now. My experience has been more than stellar.
I want to agree with you but Siri feels "dumber" to me than a few years ago. I haven't studied it that closely but these days I get more misses than hits in all categories. And even if she is "more than stellar" as you say, she still requires an Internet connection to do anything and Apple has never released a proper API for developers so she can't tie into a million apps. All she can do is search your phone, search google or search wolfram alpha. Much more useful than Alexa but not more useful than Google Now or Cortana.

I guess we're still many years away from real AI. For now we have to settle for voice recognition and basic command tasks that we could already do 15 years ago.

More so in retrospect, Siri is more fluent and able to decipher more tasks based your requests. I think most users will unanimously agree Siri is way more functional and useful with Car Play and multitasking then ever before. I don't think we are to the point where we need to worry about Siri programming my washing machine for me.
