One of the iOS 7 features highlighted by Apple at the operating system's initial unveiling in June was "iOS in the Car", a system for interacting with iOS devices not only through Siri Eyes Free but also through in-dash displays in vehicles. The feature did not launch with the rest of iOS 7, and Apple continues to list iOS in the Car as "Coming Soon".

Maybe because it's a feature that requires it be present in the car before it can be used? What use is there "launching" it on the iDevice if it can't be used? (Plus it gives them more time in testing without having to call it functional...)

Why didn't car makers choose Svoice? It's a curious question that I have.

Is there even a way for car makers to interface with it?

Microsoft and Apple both have had groups dedicated to in-car integrations and formal specifications. Does Samsung?

We didn't get the nav package with our 2014 CR-X, but our iPhones pair automatically via Bluetooth when we get in the car. Songs playing show up on the car's display. And when we press the home button on the phone, Siri speaks through the car's speakers. In turn-by-turn mode, the music mutes temporarily for her directions, just like on the iPhone by itself. I keep the phone in the cup holder in the center console so I can pick it up and see the map when I need to.

Damn, I just bought a 2014 RDX. I wonder if they plan on adding that as I'd love to have it in my vehicle. :)

Car makers? This is just Honda.
As stated earlier, rather than just an interface, other carmaker are going for something much bigger. Jaguar/Landrover and Toyota have jumped on Samsung's new upcoming OS, Tizen. That's much bigger news in this industry than some new Honda Siri interface. So what do you think of that? It's a curious question I have.

Actually pretty comical and the future of Goog. How else do you think they can sell $350 Nexus'? I've pretty much gotten out of Googs claw so I don't have to switch later.

excellent, enjoy icloud

maybe they can by not gouging their customers as apple does? what does it cost apple to make iphone 5s?

Put it on the Odyssey! PLEASE! I am waiting for this one feature so I can trade in my current minivan!!

But I need the iOS 7 in the car part too!!

The only thing I use is gmail and YouTube. Over the weekend I used gmail online and it sucked dude. I haven't logged in to their site for a while and they f'd it up. Too complicated for damn email client. Not sure if iCloud is the best mail fix, but it's free with no ads and tracking for said ads so I might give it a shot.

5s was prolly $200. Costs customers $600. Then you have the services with ad free content from Apple.

I actually got a replacement iPhone 5 so that's $200*2 =400. Then I plan on selling it to get the new one next year (~200). So it cost me $200 to use a phone for two years. Not bad Apple, not bad at all.

You seem to be under the impression that I'm attacking Svoice? But it was simply a question that I need an answer for.

On the other hand, if I remember correctly, there are more than a dozen companies on the list of Siri integration, not just honda. I think it's almost every company.

My car is a 98 and still going. Whenever it dies, I'm thinking I'll buy a used Honda, Acura or Subaru—depending on how much money I've saved as I don't like to finance. So I'm crossing my fingers that my car will make it long enough to get one of these fancy iOS-integrated cars used and then I can drive it for at least 10 years.

My younger sister bought a new car recently with all the bells and whistles and it was like stepping into the future. But hey, my car gets the job done of getting me from point A to point B. And I've done my own upgrades as well, like installing new speakers and adding bluetooth. I'm thinking about getting a mount for my new rMini too. It's weird when I get into my car with my rMini and realize that it probably costs more than my car's current value, haha. I wonder if I could just build a mount into my dashboard for the rMini with a bluetooth Siri button attached to the wheel and that would accomplish nearly the same thing?

You are the smart one in the family. Why waste the money on a new car when what you suggest do most of the same thing and save a fortune.

I have a 2012 Honda CRV with Navigation and I'll tell you that Honda's stock Navteq systems aren't the best out there. It certainly doesn't hold a light to my portable Garmin. Many reviews of Honda's all pretty much say the same thing so from this perspective it is a good move by Honda. I would hope that this approach replaces the stock Honda Navteq navigation systems at some point.

Also the potential of this integration is more than just a GPS. It really allows your phone to be an 'information center' in your car. Basically it would offer software and services Honda probably never could deliver themselves. It also promotes hands free use of the cell phone which is better for everyone.

Iphone is actually $650 + tax for base model without contract. Google figured out a way to charge $350 + tax off contract price. So you paid $200 for your iphone but you are locked to 2 years with your provider. I haven't had contract in a while and I use to use Straight Talk, now I have switched to ATT GoPhone. I'm paying $48 a month for unlimited voice, text and 2GB of LTE data. How is this bad for consumer? Fine google can track me and offer me customized ads. My data hasn't been compromised, all my spam gets caught in google's spam filtering and no other changes have been made. But sure yes google collects your data but so does Apple and both share it with NSA :)

i'm sure that apple is tracking your activity just as much as google does. Its not selling info now because its in the business of hardware not what google does. I tried me.com and icloud and truthfully its pretty bad. I use gmail and it works just fine. web client is not that complicated. I also don't want to lock myself into one particular ecosystem thats why everything i use MUST be available and work on all operating systems and devices I use.

Probably a good idea. I was invited to be part of the Siri Eyes Free beta for my 2013 RDX. After several phone calls and trips to two different dealers, they could not get it to work. Keep in mind one of the dealers was two blocks from American Honda corporate headquarters. I gave up and the only correspondence I received was a questionnaire asking how I like Siri Eyes Free.

There are things I love about my RDX, the tech package is not one of them.

Yeah...I really like the way SYNC works. No problems with my iPhone. I can't text via voice because iPhone doesn't support texting via bluetooth, but SYNC will alert me when I get a text, and will read it for me. So for now I am very happy. As siri eyes matures, I'm sure it's going to be awesome. And when I'm ready for a new vechicle in 3 years, It'll be even better.

Not until next year (2015) at the earliest.

We have a 2013 RDX (purchased September 2012).

Any idea how much the Siri Eye's Free dealer-installed accessory will cost?

Will the cost vary by dealer?

It would be nice to have a little more information on this before I speak with the dealer.

If it's not integrated already, expect to pay out the butt. They don't typically go backwards. Most likely they'll force you to get a new head unit that is "compatible" or tell you it can't be done.

I payed $200 because that's how it will get subsidized ($600 for phone - $200 for getting a replacement for free - $200 when I sell it) no contract no nothing. Heck the replacement phone alone could have been $600, right? So I paid -$200 for a contract free phone. But I'll just say I lost $200 for the sake of arguement.

I use all kinds of tech and I couldn't navigate through gmail. Also, they ruined push on mobile so it doesn't play nice with every OS (like you've pointed out). And I'm not downloading seperate apps for different mail accounts so screw there attempt at gmail on iOS.

And yes. I know Apple uses my info to better their products. And I'm not paranoid about the NSA. Something about Google getting rich[er] off your info is distressing, that's all. They have to be stopped. Glass is on the way, they patented a tattoo... I'm not gonna be force fed ads. Cool that your ok with it, but I'm not. I wanna pay and not deal with crap.

Also, you remind me of my buddy. He once actually said that he liked Google tracking his data so he gets ads... Yet Apple guys are portrayed as sheep >_>.

Well I contacted two honda dealerships. And they have no clue what I'm talking about when I inquired about getting it on my 2013 accord. Something that they advised me would be free once it became available since I bought my car in March. They took my contact info and said would call me back once they had more information on it. But they were COMPLETELY clueless. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You are using fuzzy math. First u can't count replacement phone as $200 purchase. Apple replaced your original phone because something was wrong with it. You didn't end up with 2 phones, u gave them broken phone and got a new one back. when new phone comes out, u can sell yours and get half of the value back. With N4 i noticed that it did't loose that much of its original vaule when N5 came out. For regular people its $650 plus tax and earlier u had to jump through hoops to get it unlocked. With N5 u pay $350 plus tax and shipping and u get fully unlocked phone delivered to your door.

I didn't say i liked tracking but i also understand that google is in the business of making money. I use a lot of google services that are free and the price of admission is ads. In my many years of using google i don't see them force feeding me ads. i get small unobtrusive ads in my gmail web interface thats it. I also have paid google apps account which has 0 ads

Not really fuzzy math. I got replacement phone 11 months after purchase. Any other company I would've paid again (hence the savings of $200 since it IS refurbished).

And no Google isn't necessarily force-feeding you ads now. But I see it in the future. With the tattoo and glass kind of seems like that's where they going.

So I just bought a 2013 Honda Accord that's fully loaded and it doesn't have Siri Eye.

I wonder this will be something I can add in the future to the car?

Below is the list of the "select models". It will be available for all 2013 trim levels. It's a mixed bag for the 2014 model as it's only available on the mid trim levels and above.

2013 Accord – ALL
2014 Accord 2-Door EX, EX-L with Touch Screen
Audio/Navigation – ALL
2014 Accord 4-Door EX-L with Touch Screen Audio/ Navigation – ALL

Siri Update

Apparently this update is simply adding the Siri button to the Talk Button on the steering wheel. If this is a paid upgrade I think I will pass. I can press the button on my iPhone just as "eyes free" and easily as the steering wheel.

Really? Explain to me how you actually do this and also remain "eyes free"?

I have done a lot of traveling with my iPhone, and I wouldn't consider what you are eluding to as safe hands free operation.

Also consider all of the other services that the iPhone can provide in this manner (maps, restaurants, etc). You get all of these things while driving your car?

i don't understand why people say that. apple maps is my go-to nav app, and has yet to fail me.

I completely agree with you. I really have had no problems with it at all and it seems to work pretty well.
