"Siri, open Safari."
...
"I'm having trouble locating Jafar E."

Given that the current OS X's voice recognition software can already comply to that command, I don't grasp how Siri couldn't be at the same level, to say the least.

I also wonder if 10.12 will instead be called macOS 12 or just macOS [name]?

Asking because the title says 10.12 unveiling, but we never know with Apple.

With nothing provided but an icon, how can we be sure this is not a 'shop? I mean, graphical mockups are aplenty, more so than Mr Blurrycams. No .plists, no hex editors, no contextual menus, no nothing?

I can't wait for Apple to tell us that Siri on Mac will only be available on computers sold after 2013 or so - because of all the complex processing required a $2k Mac cannot possibly do because it was purchased more than 3 years ago.

Siri integration is a great idea, but if it's anything like the laggy unresponsive trainwreck that is dictation in El Capitan it'll be in vain.

Are you being sarcastic? There are 1 billion active iOS devices. Even four years ago in 2012 there were 400 million active iOS devices. 10 million laptops/desktops is completely insignificant compared to that.
Sarcasm? Most likely not. I think it was a combination of knee jerk Apple defense (they didn't do it because of this reasons) and lack of forethought (reason makes no sense logically).

I'm just quoting the following from a post I made sometime back when this rumor was first leaked about Siri coming to Mac.

"For those of you who think this is a pointless/useless feature, maybe take into consideration people who love to use Apple computers that may have some form of a mobile disability that makes typing or using a mouse difficult. They probably also can't afford a $3000-$5000 piece of equipment to help aid them in the use of a computer. And at least half of those options out there don't have software or drivers that are compatible to make the equipment work with Mac computers. I'm one of those said individuals. I'm a quadriplegic paralyzed from the neck down and cannot even move my arms. I use a stick called a typing stick or typing wand that I can use to type with and control a trackball but having voice control is much faster and easier and causes less neck pain. I have Nuance's Dragon for Mac but it has its problems (crashes frequently and their support is next useless) and they don't keep it updated properly with each new OS releases which breaks it and each time they do finally come out with a new update months later they want a fortune for the update.

As for turning Siri off. I don't see why that would not be possible. Take Apple dictation for example. It can be turned on and off in system preferences. It's even off by default to begin with.

As for Siri being continually on and connected to the Internet to be used. Even if that's how it is on mobile devices I don't see why it would be necessary on the desktop. Again take Apple dictation for example. At one time it also needed to be connected to the Internet to be usable but not anymore. Now you can choose to use it in an enhanced mode which downloads what's necessary to operate. No Internet access needed at all to use Apple dictation anymore. The only reason I would see Siri needing Internet access is when requesting information that's online. heck, Spotlight does that now, and you can even turn that off in System preferences where it doesn't access the Internet.

As for Siri using up CPU resources, I don't see that as a problem. Using Apple dictation is no problem. It doesn't eat up hardly any CPU resources for slow my computer down any at all. So I don't see why Siri would be any different.

Who knows, maybe they intend on combining Siri and Apple dictate into one feature. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As for accessing Siri with another command should be possible also. Again, take Apple dictation as example. You have the ability to change the command that wakes it up to start listening. I use "Computer" and then give my command. I can change that too any word I want. I can also assign a keyboard command to do the exact same thing instead of using a keyword. Currently the default keyboard shortcut is "Fn" but I change that to "Opt+/" because since I use sticky keys that makes It impossible to use the "Fn" key.

Fully able bodied individuals may not see any benefit to this possibly new feature (Siri) for themselves but that does not mean it can't be beneficial to somebody else. I'm pretty confident that if they do add it that they will give you the option to turn it off if you don't feel the need or use for it."

As for somebody mentioning the menu bar icon should be a microphone because they got it right like that on the iPhone, Apple Dictate already uses a microphone icon in the menu bar. :)

If Steve Jobs was alive he'd be screaming in his grave right now.
Why would he be in a grave if he was alive? And while does a rumor about bringing a technology that is on iOS and AppleTV and Apple Watch to Mac cause you so much anguish? If you don't use it on those devices, simply don't use it on a Mac. There are people who say it shouldn't be added and people saying the opposite that it should have been added previously, and those who are excited it's going to be added.

The software has been pretty perfect for a long time on OS X.

That's the funniest thing I read all week. Apple is pretty fantastic in creating amazing hardware, but their online services suck, their software is pretty weak in terms of quality and features, and the level of OsX is nowhere where it used to be.

Nice to see it coming to Mac, although it still frustrates the heck out of me. Doesn't understand me frequently, can't get connection and even things I would think would be simple it can't do.

I just had eye surgery Friday and thought it would be cool to use Siri to remind me to take my eye drops every four hours. Also since my eyes were very hazy would be easier to use a voice command...
So I go:
"Hey Siri, remind me to take my eye drops every four hours"

Responds with:

"I can't remind you that frequently. My apologies."

Looks like it is a "reminders" issue or lack of feature, but still frustrates me.

I'll be very happy to get Siri on OS X, but yikes, that icon is not great. It's simply not 'iconic', it's like they just took a screen capture of the Siri waves and called it a day.
Most of the time they just use a quick icon for testing that they just assemble together and is easily identifiable. The final version will have an icon that makes more sense

So this will require a 'special' microphone only found in the newest Macs?
Um no? It will require any microphone built in to all macs or any external microphone you currently use. As long as your mac supports whichever version of Mac OS X that comes with Siri you'll be good to go.

Anyone remember "PlainTalk" or something like that back in the days of System 7 or so??? There was a text to speech option but I think that there was also a basic voice control option maybe in the Accessibility Preferences that you could have the Mac navigate around and open up things via voice. Maybe it was a bit later around 1995. Also was it OS9 that had a voice password?

Neither worked very well but that was a lot of years ago and seemed pretty novelty!
