On other sites, the mention that would have thinner bevel as well and would get rid the touch-ID button and relocate it somewhere else. Evidently at this point all this is rumours, but to me, it makes sense to re-haul the design if Apple wants to sell.

Also, when Apple introduces the M2 processors, the M1 would become available for their low-end line.
Only 3mm wider than de old iPad mini, and taking into account that the iPad mini already has very small bezels on the side, relatively smaller than the new iPad Air or iPad pro’ s. In combination with a bigger screen of 8,4 inch, it just doesn’ t add up. The 8.4 inch screen would be able to fit in length, but without any size increase and without touchid, it would fit easily in the current iPad mini footprint, but that is also supposed to be 3mm taller scootering to the leaks.
The physical size mentioned in the rumors just don’ t add up with the rumored specs of 8.4 inch and the rumored redesign.

so my guess is: a design that is based on the old 10.5 inch iPad Pro /iPad Air with less forehead and chin than the current ipad mini, and it will be the cheapest iPad in their new line-up . And that they will make their cheapest “big” ipad 10.5 inch based on the design of the 10.5 inch iPad Pro/air, but cheaper.

iPad mini 6 8.4 inch a13: $329
iPad 2022 10.5 inch, a13 $399
iPad Air 10.8 inch a14 : $599

don’ t get me wrong: I am hoping for a redesigned mini with the same design as the new ipad air/pro.just like everyone here. I just don’ t think we are going to see it for the next 2 years.

I hope I am wrong.

Apologies, but I couldn't follow your point on this fully.
Do you mean that the leaked dimensions of the iPad Mini cannot accommodate an 8.4" screen, even if the touch-ID is relocated?

I don't think that's accurate:
The current iPad mini with 7.9" screen has dimensions 203.2x134.8x6.1mm
By comparison the Samsung Galaxy Tab A with an 8.4" screen has dimensions 202x125.2x7.1mm

I personally believe it is totally feasible to fit an 8.4" screen not only in the presumed dimensions of the new Mini but also on the dimensions of the current model (provided the touch-id is relocated) and you have enough clearance in the margins to add a bezel similar to the current iPad Air.

Careful... the Samsung Galaxy Tab A has a more-widescreen 16:10 aspect ratio. That's quite a bit different than the more-square 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad.

You can't simply compare the screen size number in inches when dealing with different aspect ratios.

Good Point.
An 8.4" screen in 4:3 ratio would have dimensions approximately 171x128mm. So it is still feasible to fit this screen in the rumoured iPad Mini body leaving approximately 5mm bezel in the wide side. With the current dimensions of the Mini it would be a close shave, so adding 3mm on the wide side actually makes sense.

The difference is that the 8.4 galaxy tab a has a 16:10 aspect ratio, while the iPads all have an aspect ratio of 4:3, so an iPad has a less tall screen but is a lot wider than a Samsung tab a. Or apple has to release an iPad with a different aspect ratio than before.

no it wouldn’ t.

the iPad Air has approx 6 mm bezel
All around.

this rumored iPad mini 6 would have sidebezels of 4.6mm each and top and bottom bezels of about 1.5 cm each. It just doesn’ t add up. It seems to be more of a redesign with slightly smaller side bezels and smaller top and bottom chins, with Touch ID on the bottom chin.
I wish this was not true, but of the rumored dimensions and screen size are right, it won’ t be the new iPad Air/pro design.

I am not hoping for that, but it seems to be going in that direction.

But where is the information that the bezels will have that size? I imagine that it can perfectly have the iPad air 2020 design, either having less height (reducing top and bottom bezels) or having a bit more width (having more screen in the same height), which I wouldn't mind at all.

Just go to a dpi calculator(Google) pick an iPad , change the screen size in 8.4 inch and you have the dimensions of a 8.4 iPad screen, and compare that to the rumored dimensions of this new iPad mini.

I am not just taking a guess here. I did the math.

People don’ t want this to be true, but just look at what apple seems to be doing. They basically want the 2019 iPad Air with an upgraded soc to be the “budget” full size iPad.(laminated screen, thin a13, True Tone ) They just won’ t sell this at the price of the current basic ipad ($329), because the new iPad Air at $599 would be a much harder sell), so they will make the “budget” big/regular iPad more expensive around the $399-429 mark. And they will release a 8.4 inch version for the $329-349 spot. That is what will happen.
uograders from an iPad mini will be ok, more screen estate and better specs for less money than the iPad mini 5. And new iPad buyers will still be able to get one for $329. But will choose the bigger one for 80-100 $ more. If apple makes the new iPad Air $60 cheaper, at $539, they can do their favorite trick: upsell.

Ok, fair point about the upselling part, but how that relates with the dimensions of the new iPad Mini? I thought your claim was that there would not be an iPad Mini, except if you meant that there would only be an incremental update rather than a redesign.

The rumoured dimensions are just this, rumours, and have not yet confirmed. For some reason, you're trying hard to prove that an iPad Mini with a unified bezel design in the rumoured dimensions is not possible. Yes, the heigh would need to be reduced to get a unified bezel. So? Yes, if the rumoured dimensions are correct, it is possible that any new Mini would retain the touch-ID button, but would still be able to fit an 8.4" screen in 4:3 ratio. Where is the problem with that?

As far as I know, the rumours claiming dimensions are not mentioning screen size, where the rumours mentioning screen size don't seem to mention dimensions.

The leaks usually come from people who only get fragmental access to the information during design/pre-production etc and almost always are patchy. They may have seen different designs or prototypes and the information leaked may contradictory, so better to take them with a pinch of salt.

The important part for me is that there is a consistent flow of information/rumours indicating that something is brewing.
My point is that I'm not particularly care about the exact height/width/screen size or the bezel size of a new iPad Mini, or if it just an incremental update (I'll be disappointed with the latter though), as long as the form factor remains about the same.

Ok I understand now, because the rumours I've seen talk about screen size, but not device dimensions, and I was lost about height and width 😅 I still think that an iPad mini with air design is possible. Let's wait until September/October 😍

I am just reacting to a rumor, and from that rumor it doesn’ t seem to happen that there will be a radical new redesign of the mini, whilst others choose to , because of these rumors, think that there will be a redesign.
So if all the rumors are wrong, what are we even talking about? ? ? This is a topic based on that rumor, isn’ t it?

If the new Mini has bezels to accommodate a home button then it's already dead on arrival. Hope it's not the case, sad if it is.

It would be sad that only major re-design in nine years would keep it - probably for the next nine years? :)

Smaller bezels and chins, bigger screen and a13 soc and only 3 mm wider an taller and a better price than the iPad mini 5 could be enough for some consumers.

I just don’ t think apple will produce a high end mini for a comfortable price. People would be able to get an iPhone 12(reg or mini) with an high end iPad mini for less than a single iPhone 12 Pro Max. And in the future for far less than a single foldable iPhone 14.

people always think apple will release exciting new stuff, but they have always chosen for the slower upgrade path. It took apple 3 years to make an iPad Air with the new design for a reasonable price with compromises(no faceid, no 120hz) . No way they will release an iPad mini with a pro/new air design for $499, and the rumored regular “budget” 10.5 inch iPad with laminated screen, True Tone and a13 for $329. Because than this new mini would certainly be doa, and leave the 2021 iPad Air also dead in the water.

this 8.4 iPad mini with touchid button will be the new start/“ budget “ model for a good price.

I’ll probably just get the air if that’s what happens. I don’t need super tiny bezels, but the home button look feels really outdated for 2021.

Apple is building devices in high enough quantities, that in the long run, they (should be) partially driven to using the least amount of raw materials as possible. In that pursuit, they'd be foolish not to optimize and get rid of 'wasteful' borders - especially if they can cram the components into a smaller space.

There is always the (slim) chance that there would be two versions of the Mini:
one resembling the current iPad( with a touch-ID button and the current bezels) that would replace the current iPad Mini model, where the second model would join the iPad Air in the medium price tier and would copy its design (like an iPad Air mini? who knows?)

On one hand, Apple is fairly conservative in product design and redesign, so it is sensible to think that this is unlikely. On the other hand, they may have identified a need for a more powerful tablet in the small factor category. No major overhaul of the large/medium iPads is expected any time soon, so it is sensible to present a new iPad Mini, to keep the buzz going.
This also may explain the contradicting rumours for the Mini, as the leakers may actually have seen the two different versions of the product, unaware that there is another version.
Possible a long-shot of a theory, but explains some of the inconsistencies of the rumors.

What I don't understand is why are you talking about an iPad mini being a budget model, if the current one has a high price.

Of course we don't know what Apple has in mind, but they might want to release an iPad mini with better features (which now could includes a refreshed design), and maintain the iPad 10,2" as the only budget model.

Anyway, who knows what we will see in the following months, we just have to be patient 🤪

I’ll be pretty upset if they don’t refresh the design this time around. The air and pros are great, but I want complete portability. The air/pro is tempting, but since an ipad is not a necessity for me I probably will end up getting nothing (unless I can somehow get an amazing deal.)

They should, but if a body is smaller, they would have toput more R&D into it,making things smaller is more challenging than bigger.

Rumors with apple are always 2 gens ahead, and they get mixed up sometimes. I remember that apple was working on an iPhone with touchid in the display for this year. Now it seems it will be next year.

but thin of it : it is also rumored that the next regular /cheap iPad will be 10.5 inch with a laminated display , truetone and an a13. The new iPad Air is $599 and has a 10.9 inch display , a14 and new design.
To put this 10.5 inch in the price range of the current regular 10.2 inch iPad ($329)will make the iPad Air even less tempting.
And a new mini iPad Air even less tempting at $499.
This new iPad mini at 8.4 inch, but with the old touchid design at $329 and the 10.5 inch at 429, would put apple more in the position of upselling.

It all depends on the price. Perhaps not for you, but for most consumers, it is all about the price. And for the record: I hope I am wrong..
