Apple's laptop market is shrinking because they are continually releasing crap laptops. If they released a decent, upgradable, port friendly laptop their luck would be different.

Who the hell is talking about Apple laptops? Its about laptops in general.

No, they are not designed to last. The monitors break much too easily. Mac books need to be designed as sturdy as an ipad. Their screens are not. Too easy to break the MBP screen.

Well I don't know what your doing, but my MacBook Pro screen as never broke, neither as my iPad. But that wasn't what I was referring too, for example my old iPhone 4S still works (in fact my mother had it before i her a SE for her birthday) my stepdad has my old iPad 3, still works great. These devices are built very well and last a long time, therefore over time they pay for themselves and are well worth we "premium" cost in my opinion.

Battery life would be terrible. The only way that would work, with reasonable battery life is for an ARM Processor. You'd get, maybe, 3 - 4 Hours of battery life, not to mention the weight and design of this would be completely impractical. It'd add thickness, and weight. You'd be much, much, better off just getting a MacBook of some kind.

I could see them making iOS much more powerful and useful by adding certain elements from macOS. I could even see Apple going so far as to allow Magic Trackpad to work with iOS. I could see the Apple Pencil being used on macOS via TouchPad in the future. I could also see better integration between macOS and iOS and iOS being a 'Second Screen' much like DuetDisplay.
Yeah but, like the surface, the connected keyboard could have battery on it and/or be plugged into the wall.

My current understanding is that only the 12.9" iPad Pro supports USB 3.0 speeds and fast charging. Not the 9.7" iPad Pro. For some strange reason.

I didn't think the 9.7 Pro had USB3 transfer rates... only the 12.9 does. The article you linked to was published when the 12.9 Pro was released and months before the 9.7.

" Sadly, the 9.7″ iPad Pro is relegated to USB 2.0 speeds only, which is a major disappointment for anyone needing professional video and photography workflows."

I'm curious if anyone with a Mac having USB3 ports and the specific lightning connector for USB3 connected to iPad Pro 9.7 will it show up correctly as so showing the data transfer rates above 480mbps ??

Does the iPhone 6S/7 support USB3? Sorry off topic.

Yes, the ipad screens last long and are built like tanks. The MBP newer version like our 2015 purchase has the screen layers all in one so if you accidentally pop one small section with a pencil it can wreak the whole screen. Very delicate. I've spoken to 2 different Simply Mac store guys that do agree. Not designed to take any sort of damage.

Except for the one year old iPad pros that come with the added bonus of a higher price, the iPads, like the macs, are woefully out of date. You would have to be an absolute idiot to buy an iPad mini for example.

Why? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean other can't. I'd gladly pay a premium for a more capable mini. It's the only size that fits on my medical coat (im a physician), so I can easily bring it to the hospital and even forget it's even there. It's been incredibly useful for clinical reunions, reading papers on the go, etc. Quite frankly it's the only size I'd buy. So no mini means no iPad for me.

iPads and iPhones are the future, my dear Macrumors friends. The Laptop market is shrinking and shrinking, don't you know that? Now just accept this and stop whining.

I realize you are probably being cheeky but...

Yes, the laptop market is shrinking but the tablet market has plummeted. Not sure how that makes tablets the future and not a fad no matter what TC and Phil Schiller preach. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPads but they in no way compete with my MBP both in power and comfort for long projects. The reality is the only tablets showing any growth are the ones with a PC operating system, not a tablet operating system, i.e., the Surface. iPad sales have been declining for several quarters now. I don't think a bigger screen with a bigger price tag is going to fix that problem.

It seems to me TC doesn't really have a strategy here (shockers!) and is just shooting blindly hoping something hits. First he comes out with the mini then abandons it. Then he comes out with a ginormous 13" flagship, only to be upended in features months later by a 9.7" which itself isn't as powerful or feature rich as the then current iPhone. Now that one is going to be put out to pasture by one that isn't even a inch bigger and likely will have a bigger price tag. How does this not confuse and frustrate consumers?

Pretty silly thing to say actually, depend on what you want to do with. Heard about the MFI program? I’ll tell you a little about it. It’s the reason people can have controllers and game on their touch screen device.
I also think it’s kind of stupid to say you can't mix the devices. It’s just down to software and sooner or later someone will write the software that makes an OS feel natural on both devices, at which point Apple will back track and say it’s the natural way to do things.

So, it applies to a specific purpose that many who use an iPad could care less about? Oh crap, Apple should ditch their design right away for this limited segment of users. I don't need a mouse if I can touch the screen for what I want to do. It's a touch device and, get this, it's a mobile device. I've owned an iPad since day one in 2010 and I've ever used a keyboard let alone a mouse.
Why yes, I am quite stupid but I was still able to retire after a successful career and I live a nice, comfortable life. You don't have the goods to call someone stupid son.

For accessories, I am hoping for an Apple Case with an integrated Apple Pencil holder, maybe more smart connector peripherals. We may see a few lighting adaptors as well (lightning to VGA+audio jack for people who want to hook up their iPhones to projectors?).
I use the Poetic TPU case with the apple smart cover for a total cost of $57 - best buy 25% off. Works great and holds my pencil.

Yes, the laptop market is shrinking but the tablet market has plummeted.
The vendors have been making the same mistake in both cases:

- Focus on underpowered ultrabooks, ignoring normal and high end laptops
- Flood the market with cheap tablets, and forget 12" and up

I wonder why not doing also the 12.9" almost bezel free to be more compact and lighter?

If you shrink the resolution of the iPad Pro 12.9" to be 326 ppi like the iPad Mini than you get a 10.5 inch iPad (my math might be slightly off). And it should easily fit in an iPad Air footprint. Throw an OLED display in there and it's a very good upgrade in my opinion.

Yeah, but at that point, just buy a MacBook and an iPad. People basically want a MacBook with a detachable screen. Which seems like a very poor compromise. Honestly, I agree with Apple when they say the Surface Book is a poorly designed interface. It's a great computer sure, and having it work as a tablet is fine. But, but, but....

Who actually users the 'Tablet Mode' or a Surface Pro the same way the use an iPad. People want a touch screen for macOS but why? I truly don't get the value added, just as I don't get the point of Windows 'Tablet Mode'....

Why on earth do you need a track pad or mouse with a touch screen device? I use my iPad as a second monitor with my MBP (using Duet Display) and it's odd to see the mouse cursor on the iPad. It works in the context of secondary monitor but not as a primary input method IMO.
The problem with a finger touch or pencil is that it obstructs the view when you're doing something. Having the option of the touch pad or mouse would eliminate that. I think of the touching like the pop up keyboard... "well, there goes half of my retina display..." Also, from an ergonomic point of view, when you're sitting at a desk and typing on it with your external keyboard, having a mouse/touchpad helps. (moving your hand to the side to the mouse, rather than picking up a pencil or your hand.)

Just want to say, the current iPads do exactly the same thing the 2010 iPads did. It almost added 0 extra functionality or benefit (function not spec).

How about a more "capable" iPads? instead of a different screen size.

Wake me up when there's an iPad that makes it worth replacing my iPad 3.

Have not yet seen one that's remotely worth the pricing.

You (and apparently many other people) think you want it because you haven't tried it. A full desktop OS works poorly on a tablet, it requires a whole tablet OS to live inside it and tablet apps. It's a hybrid solution that just doesn't work. Buy a Mac, if you need a Mac.
I have tried it on my daughter's Surface 1, and I like it! In another discussion thread, it would be nice to have both options. When I go flying, it'd be nice to have the iPad mode while operating my EFB (Electronic Flight Book - Maps, Approach Plates, etc.) but for working at the desktop, having a MacOS mode would work, as it has the ability for movable windows.

Yes, I can buy a MacBook for work at the desk, and an iPad for flying, but that cuts into my flying money, plus more stuff to carry around. This reminds me of the discussion back in the Phone/Calendar/Music player arguments back in the early 2000's. When I got my Windows Phone (yes, with a Start Button), it became clear to me that convergence was coming, and when I switched to the iPhone, it was a great improvement in execution.

True, but like I said, that'll add even more weight to the device. You're basically completely destroying the entire point of an iPad once you go down this route. I mean, I guess you could just take the bottom half of a MacBook and just 'snap' it onto an iPad. Still don't think that's a very practical solution to this problem. Because, that that point, you basically have a MacBook... so, why not buy a MacBook?
Because i want touch and small form factor without keyboard. Don't need keyboard all the time but having access to full ms office software would be great.

I can't see it having no bezel, wouldn't that upstage the iPhone 8 in September? I can see it having reduced bezels maybe. Also upgrading the 12.9" with true tone and so on.
I understand what you're saying, but I've worked for companies that worried about coming out with something great cutting into other product lines' business, and made the new product less "great". The truth is that the customers see the trade off, and think that they're being screwed, and the resentment starts building up. That kind of thinking on the supplier's part is penny smart and pound foolish.

LOL, please. It will change and you know it will. Get off your high horse. It’s a limitation in the software that’s been written for it, that’s all. At one point the phone was a device for making calls only. Look where we are now.

Why no large screen for "high end" model? These days, Apple always make something undesirable. With each product announcement, a long time customer like me hates them more and more.

When you feel hate based on an unsubstantiated rumor, maybe it's time to move on then to those other companies who make those great "high end" tablets, especially since all Apple makes are products that you find undesirable. Life is too short to let rumors about decisions such as screen size, or chip generation, or how many millimeters thick a product is, control your feelings.

Especially since Apple's products overall are doing so well, e.g., record sales and industry leading smart watch, hundreds of millions of people buying the iPhone each year, still industry dominant iPad, iMac owning all in one sales, Airpods doing great, the new Macbook Pro setting initial sales records, Apple now the leading seller of wireless headphones in the world and owning 60 % of the worldwide premium market, Apple Pay having 75% of all contactless payments and adding a million users a week, Apple Music already #2 and adding a million users a month, the App store setting all time records and pumping tens of billions of dollars into developers hands, etc. The point is that while Apple knows it has some misses among its many hits, your view that Apple makes undesirable products doesn't match what the market is telling Apple, so you are likely to continue to be disappointed.

The most annoying issue is not the USB speed, it's that the only files that Apple allows iOS to transfer via USB are photo and video files. Yes, I know about the workaround of renaming a ZIP file to Nikon raw file, importing it, then renaming it back to a ZIP file, then unzipping it.
