Freedom From Porn

Freedom from porn is not preventing anyone from viewing porn, the freedom is knowing that you won't have to worry about getting 50 popups just because you mistyped a website address, misread a google search result, etc. I recall people getting in trouble when I was in High School for accidentally clicking on a malice link and having "Oh yeah baby,... etc" blasting from the library computers speakers.

Steve Jobs and Apple aren't trying to squash porn, just make you have to actually look for it, instead of it looking for you.

I agree. Why should I buy a car when the makers refuse to add propellers. It should be my choice. And I am boycotting my doctor. He won't install laser beams in my head.

If you are making such arguments, you may in fact have asked asked your doctor....

No, it's not like asking for propellers on your car. It's more like Steve Jobs telling you your car cannot make left turns, because he thinks the lefties support pornography.

Apple is like a company town, where the company owns the gas station and the car plant. Then they make both the fuel dispenser and the car's gas tank opening non-standard.

Then they tell you, they are all for openness and competition, and you are free to bring cars from other makers into town, any time.

Except that you can't use fill them up, of course. Just like the iPhone's USB connector.

And in that scenario, wouldn't you simply ... leave?

Seriously - no one is stopping you!! If you don't like the product SJ/Apple has envisioned, buy something else. I cannot understand why some people find that concept so difficult to grasp.

This makes me think of the scene in The Simpsons where Abe is yelling DEATH! at everything in the room. Except in this case, he's yelling PORN!

There's absolutely nothing preventing this from happening now.
Honestly the fact that it doesn't really happen in the first place is more societal. But the iphone
A) parental controls
B) lack of real adult apps on iphone (as in more than bathing suits and a boob)
C) no flash

so there kind of is. And considering the drive to get adult content on it, the fact its not known for adult content is pretty good IMO

Is the Mac "known for adult content"? I don't see why the iPhone would become more synonymous with it than any other computing platform.

Wow, major logic processor failure there.

And are the Android and Palm and RIM app marketplaces just full of porn apps? Or is this just more anti-Apple rage about nothing?

Except that this is not the case. They don't own all the stations, roads and plants. They just make one version. You are free to choose other options. There are tons of other options out there. Let Apple know of your displeasure with your wallet.

Not all porn is legal. That being said, get a girlfriend. Way better.

A girlfriend isn't necessarily legal either. What if the girlfriend is an illegal alien? Or even worse, an illegal alien girlfriend who is also a minor and a kleptomaniac? That would be 3 x illegal.

"IF you dont like it, buy something else" is a term used to completely fool people in an old capitalistic country where the consumers are naive enough to think that the choice is theirs, and anyone has the chance to offer them a different product.

Its kill or be killed. Thats the whole weakness of capitalism in america, so easy to monopolize. Which is exactly what Apple has done. And theres nobody at this point that efficiently can compete and offer the consumer a better product.

So when Jobs says this, he is sitting with a grin on his face, rubbing his hands together. Because in reality, its a joke.

The reality is that Apples products is increasingly becoming a dominant force in the computer marked. With their stationary, and portable computers, phones, tablets etc. With that much power, they can no longer do what they want, they must serve the peoples RIGHTS, not their own wallets.

Now that I think of it why is it that I've never actually noticed any porn apps in the Android Marketplace? It is just because I can't see or purchase paid apps where I live? Are there no free porn apps. Are the charts in the US store full of them? Serious query.

Great post! My thoughts exactly. Its not like Safari doesn't display porn websites. I think its great that Apple keeps the iTunes App Store a family safe place and I would like to them to keep it that way.

THe application store is supposed to allow independent developers sell their programs to peoples personal phones. So people can use their own phone, which they have payed for, for what use they want. Apple shouldnt have a say in all.

Its not a store for only Apples programs. Everything within the countrys laws should be allowed. Or else its called a restriction for the right to free flow of merchandise here in Europe.

What Europe is that? It is Apple's store, set up to sell Apple products. It's a distribution model that has been clearly set up and never run afoul of any laws. If it had, why did M$ try the same thing with their own marketplace and failed M$ store in Arizona.

The app store allows indy developers to sell products for Apple's products. Since they are indeed Apple's products, Apple is allowed to decide what goes on their products. It is their product. In the end it isn't yours, it belongs to them. You choose to buy their product over another for whatever reason, you agree to such things.

You seem to be rather casual in the rights & freedoms afforded to anyone other than yourself.

Right on, Steve Jobs!

And Apple does not need to defend its method of doing business ... as long as no animals were harmed in the process.

Is the Mac "known for adult content"? I don't see why the iPhone would become more synonymous with it than any other computing platform.

Have you noticed how one of the most common jokes about the App Store is that there are only a few good apps and the rest is fart apps? The same thing would happen if porn was allowed. Apple wants to succeed in the education and business markets, having an App Store known for being filled with porn would not help that at all.

Huh? You really need to move on to debating something else. Blockbuster allows movies from all studios, but they don't allow Porn movies, which, yes, are legal (at least they don't rent them in my state). What other stores are you familiar with that sell "Everything within the country's laws". Please list them for us. I know we would all love to see this extensive list. Every store has guidelines for their suppliers. Nothing new here. Again, no porn at Hallmark stores either, but there are "adult" card shops that have them. But we don't say Hallmark should be required to sell them too, since "they're Legal". Anyone is free to develop Apps for Apple's store (note the possessive there - as in, THEY own the store). So there is not a restriction of whom can sell there, only WHAT, they sell. For the record, we additionally do not require MacDonalds to sell baluts (that would be a fertilized duck egg with) or PETA to sell "Eat More Beef" T-shirts on their web-site.

Steve's just looking out for the user experience

I mean come on, do you really want to use the iPad with sticky fingers??

Microsoft has payed huge fines for abusing their monopoly of the computer marked in Europe. So will Apple, if they continue like this.

Remember that with great power, comes great responsibility. When millions of people around the world uses Apples computerproducts, Apple has the responsibility of allowing them view the internet, which is a public resource of information, and to follow the law of freedom and justice.

That's a good point. It's a newer platform. General opinions (whether misconceptions or not) would be less fleshed out than with the twenty-year-old platforms.

Now you're just sad spitting out gibberish...

Why are Apple's products becoming dominant? ( Which is not completely true, Windows based products still rule, and it's been documented that Android phones actually sold better last month ) Because people choose to exercise the freedom to buy them, based on a personal choice. That is how freedoms & capitalism work hand in hand. They make products people want, they make a product that appeals to a group of people over another.

Now you want to strip them of the right to make such a product, to sell a product because of the rights of others... What?!

Pick a right and stick with it.

If it is kill or be killed. What does it say of those that survive being killed? It isn't much of a monopoly if the competition is allowed to survive.

Capitalism is bad? Have you been watching too many Michael Moore movies?

Apple is a successful company because of capitalism, not in spite of it. And they rose to the top because they have consistently put out better products than the competition.

Screw the "people's rights"! That sounds like some socialist-commie crap. If you don't like Apple then don't buy their products. That's how things work in a free society.

No major American company solicits porn. Thats including Apple, Borders, Yahoo, Walmart, McDonalds, Blockbuster, Comcast, etc etc

Why? Because its BAD FOR BUSINESS. Why should Apple be held to a different standard?

Is it different in Europe or something? Do all of your multimedia companies solicit pornography?
