Obviously Gawker has a poor understanding of public relations and image. As do a few people here. Jobs understands what professional means. He wants his products to do their job and do well. Not get caught in a compromising situation.
Do you think people subconsciously think better of Apple products when they have never seen one be confiscated for porn, get caught being used to watch porn on a subway, displaying hardcore sex, or being chortled over by immature teens? I do.
Do you think its easier for educational customers and parents to buy Apple products when they are seen as a family friendly and anti-porn and violence to the point where it pisses some people off? I do.
Do you think customers truly and honestly care that there is "no porn on the ipad" when they can EASILY go find it somewhere else, or encode it for their ipad as an mp4 in about 10 seconds? I don't.
Do you think Steve Jobs is making a blanket statement about the world, the internet, and all computers? I don't.
Let me explain "freedom from porn" to you. It is really easy to get access to porn now. If you want it, you can go get it. It is exponetially easier. Does that mean every device require access to a full range of adult content just because it is possible? No. I frankly don't care if my Apple products play porn. And I would rather that ALL my Apple products did NOT play porn, so that I could safely give them to kids etc. The primary purpose of these items is information access for all people. Therefore... "making it easy to include children and work in an educational/professional setting" vs "cutting off adults from something they can get easily somewhere else"? Hmmm. Real stumper here....let me think....a few more minutes...
I'm glad Jobs said it. I agree with him.
Sex is an important part if life and I am not bashful about it. But its not part of polite society and its not classy to talk about, (no matter what you see on TV). And Apple, of all companies, likes to represent classiness, politeness, family friendliness and non-offensiveness. It wants to be at the table for everyone.
You can sit at a nice dinner and talk about whats going on in the news and in gossip, and it is fine. You can say you want to fight someone, and there will be some mutterings. You say you want to f*ck someone, and there will be a really, really, awkward silence. This is true in all cultures. Sex is not something that is discussed in polite society. Should it be? Thats a different topic. But, its not discussed, and thats how it is.
For all the idealism the freedom and open source and "lack of restriction" people who hate Apple talk about, they sure have little respect for someone who strives for an ideal, and they sure want to restrict what HE can do with HIS product line. For all their talk of "sheeple" and "freedom of information", they seem not to understand that most people just don't ...really care... they can't watch porn on their ipad because they have exponetially easier access to it than 20 years ago. And, oh yeah, access to a way more information, and way more copying/media sharing abilities than any time in human history...even with some companies fighting it. Jails exist in the mind, not on the white sheet of a cell phone or OS. Ok that was OT sorry. But now I am on a rant.
And maybe I am just getting old (27? and I'm a liberal!) but I am really, really sick of these Gawker guys. They are basically just asshats. I hope this isn't how my kids grow up or my how friends secretly view the world, because these guys act so entitled, so disrespectful (cursing in an email to a CEO?), and lack any empathy for other peoples point of view, lack foresight and lack the ability to just look at the big picture. How the hell they became journalists is beyond me.
Also, I hate hipsters.
