No Im not gonna get over it. I think people have the right to sell what they want to sell, as long as it is legal.

PORN IS LEGAL. So get over Apple instead. Realise that what they are doing is wrong, and that THEY NEED TO CHANGE.

Damn Apple fanboy.

So what you're saying that because porn is legal Apple should be forced to sell it? How is that freedom?

You say you think people have the right to sell what they want. Well, Apple doesn't want to sell porn. It's as simple as that.

So can you buy porn in BestBuy, Home Depot, Macy's or the Hallmark store? If you had a comic book store or a bookstore, should the government or people have the right to force you to sell porn, or children's books, or books on a particular religion if you don't want that in your store? Should the private owners of the Christian bookstores be required to sell porn because it is "Legal". How can people be so stupid to think it is their right to have everyone and everyplace sell or make available everything they find makes their personal life better? Yes, "PORN IS LEGAL", but you may want to try reading some other "Legal" material if you want to better understand Constitutional rights that extend not only to you, but to proprietors of businesses. Apple has the right to control the content they sell in their store, or the functionality they build into their hardware. You, equally, have the right to exercise your freedoms and choose another product that reflects your image and interests.

How can people be so stupid to think it is their right to have everyone and everyplace

Because thats how the people have made the internet.
Its not stupid to expect what is normal. But with Apple, its increasingly becomes so. You have obviously fallen into this trap long ago.

Seriously, unless you're building your own phone from scratch you're going to have to deal with other people's decisions.

It's basic commerce - if you don't like any option on the market, build your own. Since doing that would be extremely difficult for most people you're going to have to settle for the best 2nd party solution. And since you didn't build it, it's not going to be 100% to your liking.

Because thats how the people have made the internet.
Its not stupid to expect what is normal. But with Apple, its increasingly becomes so. You have obviously fallen into this trap long ago.

Read the rest of the post. Apple lets you onto the web, uninhibited. This is about what they sell in their store. I haven't seen any porn products at the Sony Style store or web site either.

Obviously Gawker has a poor understanding of public relations and image. As do a few people here. Jobs understands what professional means. He wants his products to do their job and do well. Not get caught in a compromising situation.

Do you think people subconsciously think better of Apple products when they have never seen one be confiscated for porn, get caught being used to watch porn on a subway, displaying hardcore sex, or being chortled over by immature teens? I do.

Do you think its easier for educational customers and parents to buy Apple products when they are seen as a family friendly and anti-porn and violence to the point where it pisses some people off? I do.

Do you think customers truly and honestly care that there is "no porn on the ipad" when they can EASILY go find it somewhere else, or encode it for their ipad as an mp4 in about 10 seconds? I don't.

Do you think Steve Jobs is making a blanket statement about the world, the internet, and all computers? I don't.

Let me explain "freedom from porn" to you. It is really easy to get access to porn now. If you want it, you can go get it. It is exponetially easier. Does that mean every device require access to a full range of adult content just because it is possible? No. I frankly don't care if my Apple products play porn. And I would rather that ALL my Apple products did NOT play porn, so that I could safely give them to kids etc. The primary purpose of these items is information access for all people. Therefore... "making it easy to include children and work in an educational/professional setting" vs "cutting off adults from something they can get easily somewhere else"? Hmmm. Real stumper here....let me think....a few more minutes...

I'm glad Jobs said it. I agree with him.

Sex is an important part if life and I am not bashful about it. But its not part of polite society and its not classy to talk about, (no matter what you see on TV). And Apple, of all companies, likes to represent classiness, politeness, family friendliness and non-offensiveness. It wants to be at the table for everyone.

You can sit at a nice dinner and talk about whats going on in the news and in gossip, and it is fine. You can say you want to fight someone, and there will be some mutterings. You say you want to f*ck someone, and there will be a really, really, awkward silence. This is true in all cultures. Sex is not something that is discussed in polite society. Should it be? Thats a different topic. But, its not discussed, and thats how it is.

For all the idealism the freedom and open source and "lack of restriction" people who hate Apple talk about, they sure have little respect for someone who strives for an ideal, and they sure want to restrict what HE can do with HIS product line. For all their talk of "sheeple" and "freedom of information", they seem not to understand that most people just don't ...really care... they can't watch porn on their ipad because they have exponetially easier access to it than 20 years ago. And, oh yeah, access to a way more information, and way more copying/media sharing abilities than any time in human history...even with some companies fighting it. Jails exist in the mind, not on the white sheet of a cell phone or OS. Ok that was OT sorry. But now I am on a rant.

And maybe I am just getting old (27? and I'm a liberal!) but I am really, really sick of these Gawker guys. They are basically just asshats. I hope this isn't how my kids grow up or my how friends secretly view the world, because these guys act so entitled, so disrespectful (cursing in an email to a CEO?), and lack any empathy for other peoples point of view, lack foresight and lack the ability to just look at the big picture. How the hell they became journalists is beyond me.

Also, I hate hipsters.

Very telling

The bit I like best is where he sets the scene of his lonely Friday night:

"... my wife, who might normally (and quite sensibly) veto the idea of spending Friday night sending email flames, was out of town."

Do you get the picture?

"So in retrospect I was primed to lash out."

Huh? A man left alone is "primed" to enter into an email war?

"But there was some serendipity too: Watching a new episode of 30 Rock on my digital video recorder ..."

Now here his version deviated from credibility. Maybe he was watching 30 Rock, but maybe, just maybe... he was watching porn.

"I somehow failed to skip over an Apple ad I'd never seen before, one that billed the iPad as nothing less than "a revolution." "

So he says. Can you do that? Whatever, next he reveals the fuel:

"With a Stinger cocktail at my side ..."

Yep, and little Ryan in your right hand buddy...

The theme tune to this silly little episode shouldn't be by Dylan at all, it should be: 'Satisfaction' by the Stones:

I can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no satisfaction
'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try
I can't get no, I can't get no

Mrs Gawker, forgive him for giving you that name. Dump the guy you spent the weekend with. GO HOME - IMMEDIATELY and make this hung over 'journalist' you left all alone, "primed" to enter into an email war with Steve Jobs, happy again... please.

You are correct, people do have the right to sell what they want.

Also, sellers ( I.E. store fronts, brick & mortars, vendors ) have the right to sell what THEY want, as long as it is legal.

You want to remove the right of the store owners ( Apple ) to sell what they want, so you can buy what you want. That is not right.

If you want porn so bad, buy it from the company making it, rip it, and put it on your I - Product. Simple.

You just can't selectively choose whose rights you want to enforce to make yourself happy.

Better yet, stand in front of Wal Mart and tell them you have a right to buy porn, and they better d@mn well start now. I have a feeling you'll be screaming 'Wal Mart fanboy' for quite awhile.

Read the rest of the post. Apple lets you onto the web, uninhibited. This is about what they sell in their store. I haven't seen any porn products at the Sony Style store or web site either.

Oh Apple lets you onto the web no? Exept with no Flash? Which in practical terms means that Apple is censoring just about every single website on the entire internet.
You just can't selectively choose whose rights you want to enforce to make yourself happy.

Not very clever are you? What a contradictory post. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT APPLE IS DOING.

No Im not gonna get over it. I think people have the right to sell what they want to sell, as long as it is legal.

Not all porn is legal. That being said, get a girlfriend. Way better.

Apple has no right to controll the entire computer marked, just because its being viewed on their iPad.

Who thinks it is okay for a private corporation to controll what we can consume and not consume.

When reading these forums, its like everyone has forgotten about what freedom is. Its being in China in the 50s.

Gizmodo writes what people are interested in reading about.

Apple isn't controlling the entire computer market, they are frankly only a small percentage of the overall pc market. Apple has the right to control the content they sell through their app store. They choose not to allow porn apps, and are free to do so. If you really want to view porn on an iPhone and iPad you can through Safari. If you do not like Apples restrictions you are free to use non Apple products, no one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you into the Apple ecosystem.

Do you think people subconsciously think better of Apple products when they have never seen one be confiscated for porn, get caught being used to watch porn on a subway, displaying hardcore sex, or being chortled over by immature teens? I do.

There's absolutely nothing preventing this from happening now.

They aren't controlling a damn thing. Steve Jobs isn't putting a gun to your head and telling you to buy an iPad. He isn't preventing you from opening Safari and looking at all the porn you want. He is simply deciding not to allow porn apps on the app store. It is his store. He gets that freedom, just like the management of best buy, target, wal mart, etc. Are you outraged because best buy doesn't sell porn on dvd/blu ray? Because clearly they could.

Again, you have the freedom to choose to buy the ipad or buy something else that better suits your needs and desires. I don't know why this simple concept escapes all you people.

Well spoken, Mr. Intellectual.

It's pretty sad how people defend a faceless company. SnowLeopard, Steve Jobs does not love you, nor does anyone at Apple. You are simply a consumer. What have you done that allows you to critique Ryan? He is a journalist. You are in high school.

Ryan made some good points, while you may not agree with them it's not like his statements were out of left field. How about instead of attacking his character and crying about how he may have offended Steve Jobs and Apple, you should discuss his points and why you think he's wrong.

Of course that kind of civil intelligent conversation might be a little too complicated.

Jobs seems pretty insecure the entire conversation. What is that guy trying to prove and to whom? Why can't he just take the high road? Instead all of his emails are just plain rude. What a queen.

I think people are attacking his character because as a professional journalist, not being able to find words other than profanity is just kind of sad.

So tomorrow night is he going to mail YouTube and ask why there is no porn there as well and why they support Apple iDevices with a specific app and also why they support Apple crusade against Flash with them supporting an HTML5 beta on the side?

You go girl!

Oh Apple lets you onto the web no? Exept with no Flash? Which in practical terms means that Apple is censoring just about every single website on the entire internet.

So ill informed. For one, Apple Laptops and Desktops have no such Flash limitation. So clearly you are wrong to say they don't permit it. Additionally, the absence of Flash is not a ban on porn. I guarantee I can find a HTML5 porn site within minutes. The iPad wont restrict that. So you are, again, wrong.

I agree. Why should I buy a car when the makers refuse to add propellers. It should be my choice. And I am boycotting my doctor. He won't install laser beams in my head.

If you are making such arguments, you may in fact have asked asked your doctor....

No, it's not like asking for propellers on your car. It's more like Steve Jobs telling you your car cannot make left turns, because he thinks the lefties support pornography.

Apple is like a company town, where the company owns the gas station and the car plant. Then they make both the fuel dispenser and the car's gas tank opening non-standard.

Then they tell you, they are all for openness and competition, and you are free to bring cars from other makers into town, any time.

Except that you can't use fill them up, of course. Just like the iPhone's USB connector.

When I started to like Apple, they become more douchebags than ever before. Damn arrogant and powerhungry company.

I wanted to go all Apple soon, but now Im not so sure about that. I agree with Tate, when he says that Apple is enforcing their morals on us users.

Its not as easy as to buy, or not to buy an iPad. The fact is that Apple is ruling the second majority of the computer market, and there is a whole ecosystem of developers, users and businesses depending on Apples products.

Apple seem to think that their only customers are fans, who will bend over for anything Apple wants. I think computers has ethical rights to uphold. Like letting people use it for what THEY want. Thats why its called a PERSONAL computer.

Now its less like "Apple iPad" in your hands. Its more like "Apples iPad" in your hands.
If you're going to call people "douchebags", "arrogant" and "powerhungry" at least have the decency to propose an actual counterargument to their perceived flaws. Since you obviously need help in forming a specific thought, here are a few popular choices at the moment:

  1. Apple should be forced to distribute pornography, even though no other company is forced to do so.
  2. Apple should be forced to support Flash on the iPhone rather than letting the market decide whether or not it's a valuable feature.
  3. Apple should not report felonies to the police because it makes them "snitches" and people who pretend to be gangsters on T.V., along with actual gangsters, have informed me that "snitching" is bad.

Just pick one and go with it. No need to thank me.

The whole situation is crystalizing the fact just because you are a blogger doesn't necessarily mean you are a journalist. Gawker handled the entire affair amateurishly and they're certainly going to pay the price, now.

And hey, not all hipsters are self-entitled asshats! :)

People exist on a scale made by other people. You've never really had an independent thought in your entire existence admit it.

If you can't handle that there are people better than you out there, that's your problem, not mine.

THe application store is supposed to allow independent developers sell their programs to peoples personal phones. So people can use their own phone, which they have payed for, for what use they want. Apple shouldnt have a say in all.

Its not a store for only Apples programs. Everything within the countrys laws should be allowed. Or else its called a restriction for the right to free flow of merchandise here in Europe.

I guarantee I can find a HTML5 porn site within minutes.

Why should I have to care, as an end user? If its html5 or flash, it should be up to the developer to decide.
Currently, 90% of them has made their fully rightfull choice, to design their websites in Flash, and that should work for me.
