He can want it. That's fine. But Apple doesn't have to deliver. They're not bad people because they choose not to deliver.

Is Target and Wal-Mart bad because they don't sell porn in their stores? They choose not to for the same reason Apple chooses not to.

I totally agree. It's Apple prerogative to pander to the most lucrative market. My problem was with the idea that there's something wrong with someone who wants a native Cocoa porn app. Safari could conceivably do what quite a large amount of the 200,000 apps in the store do, yet these apps exist because the experience is better.

Actually, Target and Walmart will remove books from their store and limit selections of movies and other content. I would argue that Apple has a bigger selection of movies and books that those store would consider objectionable..

If Apple really wanted to rake in the $$$$, they would allow porn apps into the store, and sell adult movies in an XXX section of iTunes. However, they do not want their business associated with that material, and can do as they please. If one does not like it, then 1)find another device or OS; and/or 2)use the web.

The FIRST thing Wal-Mart did when they bought VuDu was to remove the porn section.

Here is anything I have to say to an Apple/Steve hater:

- If you don't like their products/ecosystem then don't buy them!!!

- Apple has made billions of dollars and millions of people love their iPhone/iPod/iPad/iTunes. They must be doing something right.

- If you don't like their products/ecosystem then don't buy them!!!

Wal-Mart those bastards are Nazi Fascist communists for removing pron! THEY HAVE NO RIGHT!

Awful, awful "article".

Still, Jobs' replies are pretty pathetic too. Freedom from porn? What a joke. Way to completely fail to understand what freedom means. Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition! I love how he speaks like porn, information theft, and high battery drain apps are only associated with the "PC", LOL!

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?

I think you yourself miss the idea of freedom. The freedom of expression, choice and self image extends to companies and those whom run them as well as individuals. The very core of freedom is that Apple has the right to choose the way they want their product and their image to interact with their customers. The idea that Apple should have to open their platform to porn or flash because so many people wish it were so, would be an infringement on the core ideals of freedom of speech. Your right to view media is not limited just because Apple chooses not to have their products associated with it. This would be like saying Disney is encroaching on freedom because they don't show "R" films under the Disney name. That is because they have an equal right to protect and project the image they freely choose for their brand. Apple has the same right to control the experience their customers receive. You are not required to be a customer if you want a product that easily supports porn or flash. That is your freedom. Content creators are equally controlled in other industries if they want their work to be accepted by various outlets. Weather it is music for a particular label, books or articles for certain publishers, or art for particular galleries. That is wherein the freedom lies for everyone. If readily available flash, or porn, access is that important to you, then everyone should stop bitching and get a different product that chooses to channel that creative content.

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

I hope you never have to withstand living under real fascists - "waging war on opposing technology" big deal, fascism was very different in people around you's memory and even today, of course.
Perhaps you feel this way because you see a company get bigger, more powerful, and more "dictatorial" even with other technology producers and one vision of the future has giant corporates controlling everything, but really, Apple ultimately just offers its stuff to market and we like to buy it. I could Nd would buy another phone/computer tomorrow if I wanted to consume that instead.
NB I love this discussion and am glad that SJ took time to respond to the original drunken but impassioned email.

I think the point is on the freedom side is that yes, steve is right to say "you might care more about porn when you have kids" but is it for him to tell everyone else what the can/can't watch?. The creator of the ipad has kids, doesn't think flash should be available on it, so people can't watch porn, everyone now has to stick to that same rule.

Thats' not freedom in my book.

Gawd, no they don't. Open safari, watch porn all day.

They're not enforcing anything on you. You can still look at freakin' porn on your iPhone. They're just not allowing porn applications in the App Store. Get over it. If you really watch porn that much that you need an app on your mobile phone for it, then there's more of a personal issue at hand.

No Im not gonna get over it. I think people have the right to sell what they want to sell, as long as it is legal.

PORN IS LEGAL. So get over Apple instead. Realise that what they are doing is wrong, and that THEY NEED TO CHANGE.

Damn Apple fanboy.

How is he telling you what you can, or cannot watch? I really don't get this logic. They have a product and a store that supports it. No one thinks twice about the fact that Target and BestBuy choose not to sell porn on DVD or Blu-ray. They get to control the image of their store. That is their right to freedom of speech and self expression. Apple simply does the same. They didn't write the software on the iPad to prohibit you going to porn web-sites on the device, they just don't sell it in their own store. They are only controlling their own content. You can still use the iPad to go to "Hustler's" web site if you choose. (at least, um . . so I hear . . . .)

It is strange how Jobs acts like they did actually remove porn from the phone completely. He himself acts like Safari can't access porn.

If an iPad doesn't do what you want, don't buy it. Wait for the Android pad or some other pad.

Apple certainly has the right to their point of view on porn. And doesn't have to listen to the whiney ***** that feel that everything they want has to be on it.

If the Android pad or some other pad kicks the iPads butt because they have flash and porn, it will be interesting to see what Apple does. But I just don't see Apple having to worry about that. The people who are demanding porn are in the minority and flash will become less and less of an issue, just like the floppy.

As an aside, there sure are a lot of high school graduates who think they are geniuses on this thread. Another ringing endorsement of the public school system.

Apple and SJ are correct. The buyer has a choice.
I choose to buy 2 iPhones and 2 iPads for my family and am a happy customer. Could care less about the petty discussion about restricting choice and freedom when it comes to the gadget I use. Different when we talk about personal freedom, the right to express oneself or the right to due process. Now those are freedoms to get exited about. Apple vs Flash vs Android. Small stuff not worth getting exited about. Choose with your check books the product you like.

Get real....Gizmodo has more of a pro-Apple stance than all of these forums combined.
You get real. Gizmodo runs with whatever they think will get clicks. Sometimes that happens to be "pro-Apple" (e.g. product reviews) and sometimes it's "anti-Apple" (e.g. frothing, sensationalistic opinion pieces). They have no "stance" other than self-enrichment. If you don't believe me, just read an interview with their boss, Nick Denton.

Some sense right here.

Apple has no right to controll the entire computer marked, just because its being viewed on their iPad.

Who thinks it is okay for a private corporation to controll what we can consume and not consume.

When reading these forums, its like everyone has forgotten about what freedom is. Its being in China in the 50s.
