By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

Steve is Apple. It wasn't until he came back that the company started kicking ass and we get all the cool products and toys.

He can do what he wants. If we don't like it, we can go buy a PC, an Android or whatever.

Jobs is crossing a line...

He has the iPad, Flash is making the iPad (say Steve Jobs) running slow.
At the end the hardware is mine and I can run what ever application is out there in the market, that is MY decision, not Steve Jobs decision.

The facts are:

1. The iPad is out there, I paid for it and is mine.

2. I use Flash, is out there for sale.

3. A third party (Apple) do not want me to use Flash because it has buggs.

The only thing Apple can do is to release a warning about softwares that are not optimized for the platform, corporations do that all the time.

Imagine I buy a BMW and I install a different stereo equipment and now BMW will suit me for doing so. I mean, they can eliminate the warranty, but they cannot stop me from making modifications or using their product in the way I want.

Is the same with Hugo Chavez, Chavez do not like radio and TV stations complaining about his Revolution, and he is closing them. You have to do what I want because I say so. That is Steve Jobs speaking right now. What ever if he is right or not is not his call.

Steve Jobs can do what ever he wants with his employees, his employees can work there or not, but he cannot regulate a product I bough that is mine.

If that is the case and Flash is so defective... why Steve Jobs don't limit its use in OSX as well?

You see? Steve is doing something wrong there, is not his call to tell me what I have to run in my device.

Steve Jobs is sensorshiping my devices.

Why he does not prohibit the access to porn sites with Safari? they are bad, they have viruses, they are worse than Flash.

Capish?

First, I barely "capish" because your use of language is quite weak. Second, jobs isn't stopping you from doing whatever you want to the iPad you bought. He is stopping his own company from allowing flash use in their software that they distribute. If you can figure out how to get flash onto you iPad, I doubt he will care. He, and many of us here, will be happy to hear how great it runs(sarcasm). As for your almost childish comprehension of the world, well, I just can't help you there.

Damn. What can you do? Go on the BMW forums and compare their CEO to a Venezuelan.

LOL! Up vote for sure!

Ryan Tate is such a dumbass

He comes off looking bad and he posts it on the interwebs?

I think Gawker is scrapping for every page hit they can get before Apple sues them into oblivion.

Smells like...desperation.

Remember in Star Trek II where a dying Khan throws out the "from Hell's heart I stab at thee" line? I wonder how that worked out for him...

I guess Sony is also a dictatorship according to the brilliant logic of this guy. I just searched the playstation store and I couldn't find any porn. They clearly have a video section. They could distribute porn, but I guess they'd rather trample upon my freedom.

All these other fine examples are really wrecking the "Steve Jobs is a Nazi" vibe...(read: you're really harshing the Apple-haters' mellow). :(

Jobs is crossing a line...

He has the iPad, Flash is making the iPad (say Steve Jobs) running slow.

Actually, he didn't say flash makes the iPad run slow.

Now, Jobs do not want Adobe to run Flash into the iPad because of that.

You need to go read his open letter on Flash. That's not what he said.

But there are a lot of applications that does not run well on a regular Mac, specially Apple applications, DVD Studio Pro is so buggi, a DVD burned in DVD Studio Pro will run in 1 out of 5 DVD players, as an example.

So? You fail one exam so you might as well fail all of your exams? Your fender has a dent, so you might as well total your car?

But is a decision of the USER to choose what software to run and to complain with the manufacturer of the software.

So Microsoft should let me run PS3 software on an xbox?

At the end the hardware is mine and I can run what ever application is out there in the market, that is MY decision, not Steve Jobs decision.

That does not mean he has to SELL IT TO YOU. The fact that I want an ice cream sunday does not mean that a restaurant is run by a dictator if sundays are not on the menu.

The facts are:

1. The iPad is out there, I paid for it and is mine.

2. I use Flash, is out there for sale.

Flash is not for sale for iPad. It doesn't exist.

3. A third party (Apple) do not want me to use Flash because it has buggs.

Apple is not a "third party." (Who do you think the first and second parties are?) And I thought you said he does not want you to use Flash because it is slow? Which is it?

The only thing Apple can do is to release a warning about softwares that are not optimized for the platform, corporations do that all the time.

Actually that is not the only thing they can do. They can refuse to sell you software that runs flash, and software compiled from flash. Which is what they do.

Imagine I buy a BMW and I install a different stereo equipment and now BMW will suit me for doing so. I mean, they can eliminate the warranty, but they cannot stop me from making modifications or using their product in the way I want.

First of all, that would not make the CEO of BMW a dictator. Second, what you suggest is exactly what Apple does. They do not sue you for running flash. If you and Adobe want to figure out a way to run flash on your device, you can. Apple just won't help you do it. Probably you need to jailbreak your phone. And that doesn't even void your warranty.

Is the same with Hugo Chavez, Chavez do not like radio and TV stations complaining about his Revolution, and he is closing them. You have to do what I want because I say so. That is Steve Jobs speaking right now. What ever if he is right or not is not his call.

Here's where you are making less than zero sense. Apple is not telling you what to do. Go jailbreak your phone and run whatever you want. All he is doing is refusing to sell you flash. YOU are being Hugo Chavez. You are insisting that a capitalist has to bend his will to your socialist leanings. "The people want flash, so Steve Jobs must sell it to us!" The dictator is YOU.

Steve Jobs can do what ever he wants with his employees, his employees can work there or not, but he cannot regulate a product I bough that is mine.

Actually not true (you agree to a license agreement on the software). But the point is moot. He is NOT telling you you cannot run flash. He is simply refusing to help you do it.

If that is the case and Flash is so defective... why Steve Jobs don't limit its use in OSX as well?

Because this is a new generation of device that is supposed to work like an appliance and not require knowledge of activity monitors, reboots, etc. to work.

You see? Steve is doing something wrong there, is not his call to tell me what I have to run in my device.

And he is not.

Steve Jobs is sensorshiping my devices.
Please tell me English is not your first language?

Why he does not prohibit the access to porn sites with Safari? they are bad, they have viruses, they are worse than Flash.
They do not have viruses that effect any apple devices.

That's not a word in any language.

What are you talking about?? You make your choice when you buy an iPhone OS device. Apple can do whatever they want with their product, it's there creation. You don't like what the device offers or if it doesn't satisfy you, buy another product. That's like me saying I don't like person "A's" blog because they don't talk about Sony. You know how I solve that problem? I take my ass to a blog that includes Sony coverage. Plain and simple. Don't see what the big fuss is about, it's common ****ing sense...

This.

And so many others on the same page.

It really is common sense... the fact that people are trying to debate this is just mind boggling. You, as the consumer, DO have the freedom of choice, freedom not to buy apple. So please, do stop these irrational thought processes. Not to mention, you can void the warranty but jailbreak/hack/modify these products, just like you can on any other closed system, at the cost of legality and warranty. If that doesn't suit you, then don't buy it, buy something else that supports your needs. It really is common sense.

Oh, and please stop this "evil empire" totalitarian inference-- Apple's not the first or last company with a closed system, since they do after all serve a freaking purpose.

Cmaier, you posted right before me, thank you for having intellect and rational thought processes. Agreed with your points.

I haven't through this thread but I will just put in my 2 cents.

First off, Ryan Tate is a ****. I like how he's too chickens#!t to use his Gawker email to email Jobs. I'm sure Steve knows about it now and it probably pisses him off even moreso with Gawker. Since it's apparent nobody at Gawker thinks things through, I can't say I'm surprised.

Wow, so many people upset that Apple hasn't chosen them as their target audience! I say get over it. Buy Android and be happy.

how manny billion dollar companies do you run?

I could respect your thoughts much more on Job's decisions regarding flash and the "freedom" of the app store, if you had taken a company near doom and turned it into the behemoth that is now boasting shares over $250 and a market cap around 230 billion. Jobs' decision to exclude flash in the latest mobile OS may be controversial to those clinging to Adobe and its products, but clearly he knows what he's doing; do you?

Wow...

I can't totally agree with Jobs on all his decisions, but Ryan Tate sounds like a douche!

The problem with many of these "tech bloggers" is they think they matter and that their opinions and reviews are what should drive the market for electronics and computers...

The reality is they're irrelevant,. Apple keeps proving it time and time again that these bloggers are irrelevant when it comes to buying decisions in the vast majority of consumers. people wont stop buying the ipads/iphones /iwhatever just because engadget/gizmodo/etc are ranting daily about the lack of freedom/sdslot/porn/flash/ponies etc in the app store...

Ryan Tate is such a dumbass

He comes off looking bad and he posts it on the interwebs?

Something's not quite right in that brain of his.

Possibly viewed too much Porn as a child?! :D

Or the fact he lives in Berkeley, CA and dreams of living in France!

It's a toss-up regarding the 'something not quite right in that brain of his!'

Job's knows.....

hey,

steve jobs was called a "twit" when he made the first iMac.

everybody said, "WHAT!!! NO FLOPPY? no serial ports? no parallel printer ports? is steve crazy?"

no, steve is a visionary, and said that is old crap, going out the door. stop clinging to old crap.

hence... today's flash is OLD CRAP due to the progress of HTML5.

EMBRACE THE FUTURE!!!!!!!!!!

(and this is why apple users are sucking today. past PC users now being mac people not realizing how cool it is to be on the bleeding fringe of the future.)

Apple has no right to controll the entire computer marked, just because its being viewed on their iPad.

Who thinks it is okay for a private corporation to controll what we can consume and not consume.

When reading these forums, its like everyone has forgotten about what freedom is. Its being in China in the 50s.

Gizmodo writes what people are interested in reading about.

Because thats how the people have made the internet.
Its not stupid to expect what is normal. But with Apple, its increasingly becomes so. You have obviously fallen into this trap long ago.

Oh Apple lets you onto the web no? Exept with no Flash? Which in practical terms means that Apple is censoring just about every single website on the entire internet.

Not very clever are you? What a contradictory post. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT APPLE IS DOING.

THe application store is supposed to allow independent developers sell their programs to peoples personal phones. So people can use their own phone, which they have payed for, for what use they want. Apple shouldnt have a say in all.

Its not a store for only Apples programs. Everything within the countrys laws should be allowed. Or else its called a restriction for the right to free flow of merchandise here in Europe.

Why should I have to care, as an end user? If its html5 or flash, it should be up to the developer to decide.
Currently, 90% of them has made their fully rightfull choice, to design their websites in Flash, and that should work for me.

Microsoft has payed huge fines for abusing their monopoly of the computer marked in Europe. So will Apple, if they continue like this.

Remember that with great power, comes great responsibility. When millions of people around the world uses Apples computerproducts, Apple has the responsibility of allowing them view the internet, which is a public resource of information, and to follow the law of freedom and justice.

In all seriousness..What?

There's also a reason why the US has the lowest life expectancy and the highest infant mortality rate in all OECD countries. There is also a reason why the US has the highest percentage of poor people and one of the highest crime rates and the most absurdly overcrowed jails in the Western world. Crumbling roads, a fault-prone power grid, no high-speed rail network, ****** public schools.. and so on

Don't get me wrong, I still think the US is a great country. But some things need to change, or you're going down faster than you can say 'China'.

But yeah, that's totally offtopic.

Of course the US also has the largest inflow if immigrants of any OECD country (http://www.oecd.org/document/52/0,3343,en_2649_33931_42274676_1_1_1_37415,00.html). Fancy that!

Because I know someone will bring it up.. Less than 15% of those are from Mexico and I am not sure why that matters anyway..

Even though it is completely beside the point, you lied. The US does not have the lowest live expectancy of OECD countries (Turkey), does not have the highest infant mortality rate (Poor Turkey again), does not have the highest crime rate (Appears to be Iceland, US is not even in top 10, had to go outside of OECD for statistics). Your "crumbling roads", "**** public schools", and "fault prone power grid" were purely anecdotal. We could use more high-speed rail, but most of the world is lacking in high speed rail...

Is the US perfect, no. Do we need to improve healthcare, yes. Is any of this relevant to a lunatic blogger...No.

As for comments about should we be able to run PS3 games on an XBox360, I would simply like to post a little reminder that all console games ( that I'm aware of ) are developed on a Windows PC, with the "IDE of choice", though most commonly Visual Studio. There are many tools out there, and I'm sure many Game Devs. use many different things.

Each console kit has a collection of tools and api's to target ( or interface ) development for that particular platform ( or console ). Overall, it is very open ended, and as a result the best games in the world, were created on a Windows PC. While I am a big fan of Mac's, there is no question that Windows and PC's have played an important role in driving the evolution of graphics hardware to where it is now.

I know a lot of game devs that use custom/in-house tools to target specific platforms, they at least- have that choice, and I don't see that "quality" has suffered with the open-ended development on Windows PC's and consoles. In fact, many Mac users here are hoping and waiting for many of these games developed on Windows to come to OS X.

To develop for the iPhone/iPad, you must use Apple's IDE, Objective-C, and their SDK ON A MAC ONLY. This is NOT a slam, just an FYI.

oh yea def! which is why apple must pre-approve every app. i totally agree with that, but the option should still be there even for a porn/adult reading section if they so choose.

I want that job! Pre-approving all those adult apps!

I never understand this need to scream "leave the choices to us" mantra, because in the end when something goes wrong the first person you scram at for a fix is apple. People use some common sense if someone is only trying to make your purchases enjoyable and worth while… don't bitch. Remember you don't have to buy it, just go buy some other manufacturers.

Awful, awful "article".

Still, Jobs' replies are pretty pathetic too. Freedom from porn? What a joke. Way to completely fail to understand what freedom means. Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition! I love how he speaks like porn, information theft, and high battery drain apps are only associated with the "PC", LOL!

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?

I have to ask.
Why is it that every single venue and platform MUST be an outlet for porn?

Freedom is there. No one is forcing anyone to buy an Apple product or support it. The company made up their own product and they should design it however they like and if you don't like it you're perfectly free to develop your own product or support another product. You have the freedom and a company should have freedom to choose their own design. Whether if it makes it or fail should be up to the consumer.

To develop for the iPhone/iPad, you must use Apple's IDE, Objective-C, and their SDK ON A MAC ONLY. This is NOT a slam, just an FYI.

About F. Time someone came with an appealing platform (iPhone OS) you can develop for in something other than Windows, just for a change. Forget about the Xbox (It's Microsoft's), I wonder if it is possible to develop PS3/Wii, etc. in something other than a Windows PC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but all those people take the Adobe stance of supporting Windows and Windows alone. The lock-in cycle perpetuated. Then Apple came in with a successful platform from scratch (iPhone OS) and said: "Our rules. Our Hardware. Our IDE.". Tough Luck!

I could care less about the whole porn debate, whether it is healthy or not, etc. That is up to the individual who wants to view it.

What I don't understand is, why MUST Apple have porn in the App store?

Porn is readily, freely available all over the internet. You can download porn specifically formatted for Apple mobile products directly from porn vendors.

So why should Apple offer porn when they don't want to? They, themselves, are losing 30% of potential app sales in the adult market because they don't want to deal with it.

I have yet to hear a cogent argument about why Apple should put porn in the App store? Apple in no way is telling you what is moral or right/wrong or what to do with your iPad. They are simply saying, hey, we don't want to be in the Porn business and deal with that market segment, but feel free to get it elsewhere.

This isn't censorship. Apple isn't giving you an iPad that will all of a sudden blur out boobies and dicks. You can put all the porn you want on your iPad.

Most of the noise about no porn on the iPad/iPhone/iPod, other can be viewed though Safari. I think it's just something for people to bitch about. It's Apple's legal right not to sell porn. Just like it's your legal right to buy the iPad/iWhatever. Don't like what Apple offers..DON'T BUY IT!!!!

Is this that hard to do people?

Apple has no right to controll the entire computer marked, just because its being viewed on their iPad.

Who thinks it is okay for a private corporation to controll what we can consume and not consume.

When reading these forums, its like everyone has forgotten about what freedom is. Its being in China in the 50s.

Gizmodo writes what people are interested in reading about.

"IF you dont like it, buy something else" is a term used to completely fool people in an old capitalistic country where the consumers are naive enough to think that the choice is theirs, and anyone has the chance to offer them a different product.

Its kill or be killed. Thats the whole weakness of capitalism in america, so easy to monopolize. Which is exactly what Apple has done. And theres nobody at this point that efficiently can compete and offer the consumer a better product.

So when Jobs says this, he is sitting with a grin on his face, rubbing his hands together. Because in reality, its a joke.

The reality is that Apples products is increasingly becoming a dominant force in the computer marked. With their stationary, and portable computers, phones, tablets etc. With that much power, they can no longer do what they want, they must serve the peoples RIGHTS, not their own wallets.

"Jobs ends with:
By the way, what have you done that's so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?"

What a lame atitude from Steve Jobs.

He is acting every time more like Hugo Chavez, probably he is old and his brain is not working well.

Sorry guys, I know all of you adore Jobs, but you need to have criteria all the time and most of you just don't, probably you are a bunch of geeks/kids, who knows. But I know what a dictator looks like and sounds like and Steve Jobs is just crossing the line regarding Flash and the iPad issue.

Is not Jobs job to tell me what I can run or not in MY hardware if is available in the street.

That is like Hugo Chavez closing the radio and TV stations because they are not agreed with the Bolivarian Revolution. Just the same thing.

Be careful and all of you do not end up under a dictatorship one day.

Theses last quotes are jokes right?? I mean come on, there are choices out there on what smart phone you want. Each smart phone has their own plusses and negatives. If you buy an Apple product then you must work with the walled garden, don't pick Apple then you don't have to worry about the wall garden. Just as simple as that.

Exactly. The list of companies that do not sell porn vastly outnumbers the number of companies that do. I guess that makes them all dictators, right?

The complete lack of rational thinking from some members of this forum defies description.

Who wants to bet Microsoft won't be selling porn in its Windows Phone 7 mobile store (which will also be locked down, like Apple's)?

I also searched RIM's BlackBerry App World for the keyword "porn." One result: an audio book detective story about a murdered porn film director. Which is not porn.

I also searched Palm's webOS app store for the keyword "porn." No results.

Where's the outrage, people? Where's the outrage?

Hypocrites.

More proof that people are bitching about it because they can and tries to make Apple look bad. But I don't see it working though.

Jobs is crossing a line...

1. If you bought the iPad then you already knew there wasn't any flash and that apps for it under a wall garden.

2. Knowing what you knew about the iPad, you still bought it.

3. Apple as the right to have any restrictions/do not sell on it store. As you have right to do any thing with your iPad. You can get the dev kit and make your own apps. You can jailbreak it (although Apple doesn't like you do so).

Hugh

It's a little like this.
You have the choice between MacOS and Windows.
Apple's not taking away choices by offering the iPhone... it's offering choices! It's offering a device that runs HTML5, but not Flash.

You want Flash? Go buy a different device! It's like complaining that Macs don't come with Windows, and Apple won't support it.

By offering its product (and its own rules surrounding that product) Apple is not removing any choices from consumers.
