How exactly would you want to update the Air 2, if the 6S will be mostly a little improvement with force touch? Unless Apple introduces Force Touch to the Air 2, there's nothing more to stand out. Yet they took 1 full year to include Touch ID in the iPad line, so they'll likely do the same with the Air 2 regarding Force Touch.
People don't upgrade iPads nearly as fast their iPhones, so there's no need to really upgrade the already great Air 2.
The report doesn't seem "sketchy" to me at all.

Just put an A9 in and make the minimum storage 32 GB. Just like going from the iPad 3 to 4 - minimal changes.

to a lot of people it's supposed to be a surface pro competitor. many people have held off on succumbing to a windows machine in the hopes that apple will give us something not only on par, but better. iOS would kill the pro. KILL.

clearly not many people on MR agree with me here, but i know plenty of folks who would be very disappointed. and finally buy a surface pro (cause it does what it should and does it pretty well).
I think the new MacBook is a pretty clear indication that Apple wasn't BS'ing when it slagged off these convergence devices. An iPad "Pro" doesn't need OS X to compete with Surface. It just needs a more powerful iOS (which we're starting to see) and better pressure sensitive pen capabilities.

looking forward to iPad Pro, will replace my iPad Air 2 with that. I doubt they will end the life of the mini, unless the next iteration sells badly. I cant imaging the iPad Mini sells any worse than the Ipods etc. and they still make new ipods.

I think this year Apple will reserve the A9 and bigger storage for the iPad Pro, keeping the Air 2 unchanged. Maybe 64GB will be the baseline for the Pro.
It makes sense from a business stand point, given iPads are having steady or declining growth, even with yearly upgrades. Apple will adapt to that, just like it did with the iPod.

i can't argue opinions especially based on hearsay and rumors, but i truly think they'd lose a lot of highly needed 'tablet momentum' if adobe's desktop quality software wasn't available. if they're concerned with tablet sales, releasing a lesser surface pro would make tons of folks i know scoff for eternity.

for all i know maybe adobe has been working on such a thing FOR iOS, but i'm wondering how much RAM an iOS iPad would truly need to deal with photoshop/premiere files that can climb easily over 100gb. we'll see.

At my previous job I have used iPad 2 and the "new" iPad with Retina as well as the mini1.
Liked the speed of the "new" iPad.
Loved the portability of the Mini.

My wife has a Mini1 and I have a Mini2. It's just the right size. I always have it with me and would not want to carry around a larger iPad.
At work I have access to iPad2 to test new iOS etc and that stays on the desk always.

Used Air1 for a day and really was not that impressed. Went to look at Air2 at the store and felt meh.

Different strokes for different folks. I totally get that.
There are people that say they love the mini, and then there are others that say it's pointless to have it.

I think mini fits in doctor's coat pockets right?

I don't understand the hate towards the mini. I love mine. It is way more portable than when I had an iPad. Why can't we have three?

Looks like it's getting squeezed out, with the iPad Air making the tablets smaller (by reducing, and maybe someday eliminating, bezel) and the iPhone Plus making phones larger. Is there enough of a gap between the two to warrant yet another product in the middle? Remember, one of Apple's guiding principles is minimizing the number of major products. Now that the 6+ has come, might be about time for the Mini to go.

Things were so much easier when they only sold the current model instead of the confusing array of new and old models. I hope they don't ditch the iPad mini. If they update it to the same spec as my iPad Air 2 then I'll buy one. It's easier to hold when reading books and fits into my coat pocket.

You really expect greedy Apple to lower the starting price of the iPad Air 3 to that of the iPad mini? Not going to happen. ...

Please, when using the phrase "greedy Apple," it comes off much better while squinting your eyes and uttering it with a little sneer.

Bonus points awarded for ending with: "Ah! It's a profit deal!" (Steve Martin, in "The Jerk")

I suppose it's possible that there be no iPad Mini 5 until 2017, or if there is one next year, a minimal upgrade like the iPad Mini 3. Perhaps it will be exactly the same as the iPad Mini 4 but with force-touch added?

We've heard no rumors about the iPad Air 3, and there hasn't been any leaks yet, which suggests that it will look exactly the same as the iPad Air 2. I don't think they would wait until Spring 2016 to unveil it, much like they didn't release the iPad Mini 4 in the Spring.

I think the iPad Pro will be running Intel chips not Arm. Why else would Apple be recompiling every iOS app automatically to work on multiple processor architecture? (and they are not shouting about this either). Only other reason i could think of is for maybe Mac OS X 10.12 to run iOS apps.

You need a tablet use Adobe software? Or are you referring specifically to people who need to use Adobe desktop software with pressure sensitive pen support? Would Apple really design a product just for that? I honestly don't believe Apple cares about Microsoft Surface or thinks it needs to design a product to compete with Surface.

As someone who's planing to upgrade my iPad this year, I'm really looking forward to see what Apple has in stores for the new iPad.

Ditto on that . . . my iPad Air is getting long in the tooth and I was looking forward to upgrading with a cellular model this year. Will just have to wait and see what the future holds. As to the iPad mini: I donated one to the small nonprofit I direct, and we use it for a little bit of everything - credit card transactions, purchases, emailing, even streaming movies over a projector - and it fits in a small desk drawer. I see no reason to do away with this form.

It's no longer needed with the larger iPhone.

Ugh they better keep the mini. I use two in my house for controlling my SONOS and other devices. I don't want some 10" iPad or 12" mounted on my wall.

Just use your iPhone or get the new Touch 6.

More sizes, not less!

Yeah. The dirty little secret is that "one size fits all" has never worked, not in socks, not in laptops and certainly not in tablets. I love my larger iPad for reading magazines and my mini for books. I'd love the rumored "really big" iPad for when I don't actually need my laptop. When I'm working with fabric selections for a project, the more screen space I have in my ultra-portable device of the moment, the better.

The idea of shrinking product lines only gathers real steam if Apple believes the world economy is heading towards stagnation and therefore a semi-permanent reduction in potential markets. I doubt that's the case. I can see them instead letting some parts of their product lines languish for a bit longer the way they do now with assorted iPods. The mini iPad woul.d be a candidate.

As initial rollouts' development costs recede, profit margins improve on these things and a lot of the tweaks can be scaled across product lines now. I'd rather they stuck to this approach in the hardware, though, and stopped trying to cut software costs by making the OS more like iOS.
