Yet another unfounded rumor made up just to get clicks and views. I can tell you off hand its bull. 1, the baseline ipad would then be too simular to the Ipad Air line, and why would anyone even bother buying the Ipad Air. The budget model is meant for casual content consumption and not really professional use.

Hell i even still wonder why the hell they put an M1 chip in the Air and still sold a M1 Pro? Like outside of the 120 HZ and better screen whats the major diffrence?

Making a baseline look almost identical to the air would only further hurt the air!

Heres what i hope for the baseline. The leaked rendering is true, it uses the 2nd gen apple pencil, we get the pogo ports on the back (the 3 dots) that make it useable with the Magic Keyboard, and we get a nice little entry level ipad that does 90% of what the higher end models do sans Center Stage (which looks horrible IMHO) doesn't have as much memory, doesn't have the 120HZ refresh, or lacks the higher end screen!

That will sell like crazy if they don't inflate the price too much!

It would be very “Apple” to adopt the flat sides and Apple Pencil 2, some other minor trickle down from iPad Air/Pro design, but keep the circular home button with TouchID. To me, it makes sense to give the lock button with TouchID, but we shall see…..

I would upgrade ipads if they got a landscape. I use my ipad daily for meetings while WFH and I always look like am looking off to the side.

Bonus if the camera ditches the ultra wide and goes back to the older, sharper, better low light performance camera. I don't need that zoom in and camera follows me feature.

Live events. Big venues. Sound boards. That's what I'm plugging into.

I love my AirPods... and I use Bluetooth in my car.

But I prefer to be hardwired in a church or large venue.

Just a personal thing. I know iPads won't have a headphone jack... I just like to vent online. Let me.

:)
I agree. Wired is much better in those circumstances. No worries about lag, battery life, or losing the signal. For a major production, reliability matters.

This sketchy rumor does not seem impossible. New Pros are supposed to be announced in Oct so if a new low-end model came out in Sept. I don't see an issue. Bigger issue is finding way to differentiate the product lines. But Apple has always found a way to do so. ;)

Why not get The 2021 iPad then?
It still has one, and it’s not even a year old yet.

Maybe I am the odd one out here, but I support a lot of older folks who do quite well with a home button. I have worries (and anecdotal observations) that the full screen gestures many of us use without thinking, will be frustrating for them. Steve was on to something with the “one button“ concept.

I’m cautious about putting the front facing camera in landscape. That would only be beneficial if you have a keyboard attached all the time and use the iPad like a laptop. But without a keyboard, portrait orientation makes more sense as a tablet.

Apple could make a killing by selling something that looks like the current iPad Air but with (comparatively) dated internals.

Doing a very conservatively spec'ed 10.2 budget friendly version of the iPad Air with added Apple Pencil 2 support would be a hit.
I dunno. Then my first gen pencil would become worthless.

VGA was obsoleted by better connectors. But we're still using a cable.

I know Bluetooth is supposed to be the answer whenever anyone mentions losing the headphone jack.

Well sorry... I'm not gonna use Bluetooth to connect an iPad to a sound system in a church or other performance venue.

;)
Bluetoot has to be the least reliable wireless tech out there.

That’s my take too.

I only see the baseline iPad adopting the Air’s design after the Air moves on to something new.

It’s the same with the rumored 14”-15”-16” MacBook Air. It’s just not happening as long as MacBooks Pro are 14” and 16”

Apple would kill so many sales of its most expensive machines if it lets the least expensive ones get bigger and better displays, or let the budget devices get the high end designs.

Whilst I would jump at a landscape camera iPad, I find it hard to believe it would come to the budget iPad first before the pro and air.

This sounds great. Some love to the 10th generation iPad. iPad Air design and horizontal center FaceTime camera would be awesome.

Zoom???

Let the iPad AIR be "the new iPad"

I personally use an iPhone 6s for this very purpose. And I've bought a bunch of original SE and 6s just to use as music players and time lapse cameras. They'll both update to the newest iOS but will be dropped with iOS 16.

I was thinking about getting the Walkman mp3 player but everyone said the DAC in iPhone is way better.

Unpopular opinion: I wish the Pro had more of a bezel so that you do not accidentally trigger inputs by just repositioning your grip when holding it.
