Not going to happen, Apple is not going to make a major processor change in such a sort amount of time. Remember, the RMB was in rare supply back in May, it didn't reach critical mass of inventory until July. It's a baby, it's barely out there.

What Skylake offers to a notebook the RMB doesn't need (battery life) or isn't part of it's mission (processing horsepower). If anything, these HP's and Dell's need Skylake just to keep up with Apple, not the other way around.

yes, but Apple always updates to the latest processors within a couple of months of their release, and it would not be a great business move not to do this now with Skylake. At what point does it get upgraded if needs no additional battery life [which I completely disagree with] and horsepower? I think it needs both.

Agreed that Apple historically updates notebooks when new processors come out but there has never quite been a notebook like the RMB. Look at its form factor, look at its price, look at its current processing capabilities, look at its single port, it's not for everyone. It's for a niche, luxury audience. An audience that is very happy with its all-day battery life and doesn't need a processor bump for applications.

So combine that with the fact that it's really only been out in a decent inventory position for 4 months and it wouldn't make financial sense for Apple to update something so new and something that has sold in limited numbers. That's my perspective as a businessman. Could I be wrong? I don't think so. I think there is a lot of wishful thinking in this thread, a lot of people unfortunately depriving themselves of a terrific computer by waiting for something that isn't coming in the near future.

Maybe this is the issue with technology and products though. It is Apples own problem if they only have had decent inventory for 4 months, however the world around them is progressing. I am in the product business myself and totally agree that I don't want to be updating every 4 months, however I would review the competition and be aware that my product would have been out for a year and is now out of date. Although we all know Apple products still sell even if they are poorly specified compared to competition, so really it is unpredictable, however I still lean towards an upgrade will happen.

Having said that they seem quite comfortable with the Mac Pro languishing without an upgrade, so who knows what they will do.

BTW I have a RMB and the battery no way lasts me a day [I use it every day and is my all time favourite Mac and I have had all of them] - this is the main reason [together with graphics improvement] why I hope for Skylake.

We'll see. Let's check back with this thread on tax day -- one of us will be eatin' some crow! ;)

I expect all next years Mac and MacBooks to be TB3 compatible over usb-C and particularly that the MacBooks support true 1 cable docking with 5K support to a 27 TB3 display. If this is the case, I suppose the 5K support is one of the main challenges considering the custom timing controller etc in iMacs.

Will be disappointed otherwise.

I haven't done the research on this, but in addition to waiting for the right processors (at least for the MBP at this point), I wonder if Apple is delaying their updates/redesigns because of Thunderbolt 3 on USB-C. Has that actually been released yet?

Except if you search for "Thunderbolt 3 cable" or "USB-C with Thunderbolt 3", nothing for sale actually turns up. I also looked up the Dell site specifically, and they advertise their new XPS line (which the Mashable article cites) as having Thunderbolt 3 with the expected protocols, except for DisplayPort. So it does not appear that Dell's machines can drive 2X4K displays; at least they're not advertising it.

Those of you who are very familiar with Apple's laptop update schedule:

Any idea as to which models since 2008 went the shortest time between updates?

And which ones since 2008 had the longest time between updates?

Special event at January for the 10th anniversary of the rMBP with rMB updated to Skylake and x2 TB3, rMBP update / redesing, and iphone 6c. Sounds good to me. *crossing fingers*

That's exactly what I'm hoping for.

Seeing what Dell has come up with (XPS 13/15 and now even a new XPS 12) makes me anxious to see what Apple can do. I'm expecting the rMBP to become much thinner and lighter and go head to head with the new XPS-line. The Retina MacBook will hopefully gain some extra horsepower as well, and maybe Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C. :)

I can't remember the last time that Windows machines beat Apple to the punch on new tech, but Thunderbolt 3 (of all things!) is gaining traction quickly because of USB-C. I can't fathom Apple NOT adding it to every laptop in the next update. Heck, the desktop lines too.

I'm very excited about a Skylake upgrade for the MacBook. Even though Intel claims up to 40% faster GPU, I've read reports of up to twice as fast GPU performance!

so next macbook will probably use Intel HD 515 ?

I left some gaming videos and cinebench benchmark on this thread at page 15 if you want to take a look at the HD 515 performance. Very nice in my opinion.

The top Skylake Core M (m7-6Y75) it's currently availabe and it equals the geekbench performance from the i5 on the 2015 Macbook Air 13!

Skylake chip is no small deal. It's the most anticipated tock release, which brings many significant improvements. Apple is not gonna pass up a chance to brag about upgrades and fixes to their new first-generation product. Tick releases, on the other hand, could happen without any fanfare, but not the tock ones.

The target consumer for the rMB doesn't know or care what Skylake is. It's just us nerds here in the nerdery. It's portable, it's cute, and it comes in gold. Sold to the masses.

But not in pink. Yet. Mark my words, pink will be all the rage for Rev. D. 8)

The Surface Pro 4 Core M3 has a HD 515.

I think, the rMB will get the HD 515 too
The Surface Pro 4 has active cooling. The Asus does not, but we all know Apple to be conservative, so I wouldn't count on it getting the HD515. One can hope though.
