I think we'll be seeing new Retina MacBooks today, tentatively based upon this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/4b7kyv/macbook_12_renew/

Basically an Apple Store employee noticed they were out of Retina MacBooks, so went in to their system to order more stock. Model was listed as discontinued, and all other Apple Stores within 250mi of his location were out as well.

Looks like this Apple "employee" fabricated a nice story and strung us along.

Not just the rMB, but entire Mac line.

Did they even mention "Mac" without referring to iOS?

They didn't, however towards the end of the iPad Pro bit, did they say something alone the lines of "the future of mobile computing". Worrying that Apple is pretty much focussed on iPad now.

No kidding, so depressing for those of us looking for Mac updates.

Yea that scared me too. A lot.

The touchscreen is great for some things, but utterly terrible at others. My Air2 sits in my bed 95% of the time. Try navigating between characters of a CSS stylesheet with a finger, or managing any amount of media without a Finder, or managing other computers or networks through ARD or SSH (I know there are apps for this but let's be real its not native Terminal or x86 remote)

How am I supposed to work with xcode? What about website frameworks or platforms like AWS? The future of computing will continue to rely on processes invented decades ago. iCloud does not run on ****ing iOS devices stacked in a datacenter. Media networks don't pipe media out of an iPhone with a stupid dongle. Real productivity requires real tools and ignoring the tools developers and creatives use to create this vibrant ecosystem is seriously concerning.

Yeah, I think the rMBPs are out of the cards. I desperately want a new 15" rMBP, but I expect I'll be waiting until WWDC.

Still, if the Skylake rMB GPU performance looks decent, I may pick one up. That's the only reason I returned a current-gen rMB, the graphics felt underpowered.

I dunno: new hardware hasn't been released at WWDC since, what, 2013? Maybe Apple's new(er) plan is to keep WWDC software-only, while new or updated hardware gets its own keynote or a press release. In fact, I'd have thought Apple would have waited a couple of weeks to announce the updated 15" rMBP at WWDC last year, but they just did a presser in May instead.

This is true, looking back through news releases -- so who knows! I expect if they'll do anything more than a spec bump, they'll announce it at an event, and presumably WWDC is the next one. The 2015 model (which I have) was just a fairly minor spec bump, all things considered.

I'd rather have it sooner-than-later, so here's to hope!

Macs were not mentioned today simply because Macs did not receive updates. Seems fairly logical to me at least, to keep focus on the product lines that receive updates.

I suspect and hope the Mac line will receive more attention as work related machines. Seemed like Mac was pushed more towards the work PC market through the partnership with IBM.

How about this strategy?

iPad: consumer PC
Mac: work PC

They're trying to market the iPad Pro as a desktop replacement, so they're weren't going to upgrade any Macs at the same time. Would've been a confusing message.

They might still do a silent upgrade for the rMB between now and WWDC. But... if they're planning a big form-factor refresh for the MBP, they'll probably do everything at once and want to present it... so that would make WWDC our best bet.

Meh.

The Skylake update won't be a big deal to the majority of consumers. It will probably be a quiet update later this spring or summer like the last few MacBook Airs. Something on the homepage and an email. "Retina MacBook. Now XX% faster."

CPU performance-wise, Skylake isn't too big a deal -- 10-15% faster compared to Broadwell (obviously for 15" rMBP users like myself, it's a bigger deal, because that model is two generations behind, so looking at a 15-20% performance delta). The bigger deal for Skylake is on the GPU side, and that's what consumers will feel especially on the rMB, as animations and desktop composition will be smoother.

I do agree, I think they'll only bump the CPU and leave the case unchanged on the rMB, allowing for a short mention at a keynote, or a press release update.

It's just frustrating when all (literally, all) of Apple's competitors have rolled out Skylake to most of their product lines, and we've got...uh...iMacs with it? I mean, that's better than nothing, but not by much for those of us needing portable solutions. I understand the lack of Iris 580 chipset models up until recently for the 15" model, but Intel has the chips in channel now, supposedly...

First world problems, I guess :p

I will say that I am in the target market for this MacBook. I do not do much that requires processing power, and I certainly use it for mostly word and other stuff that is pretty basic. HOWEVER, I keep my computers for a long time and I really like the idea of future proofing. I can live with the graphics and processor. I can even survive with the 12" screen even though it is smaller than I prefer. But damnit, if it is only gonna have one port, it needs to be pretty damn fantastic if I'm gonna keep it forever, and until today I did not realize why TB3 just won't happen in this MacBook, in this current form factor. I'm pretty bummed because I have saved the money and continued to wait for the right MacBook and I thought this would be it. Now I think I might need to use the next 2 months to save a little more and see what happens to the MacBook Pro. Either way I am buying a new MacBook this year but damn you apple, damn you.....
