I've found a deal for a rMB 1.2ghz/512 for £650! That's almost half the price and it's only a week old! To buy or not to buy!?
Sound suspicious, if you ask me. May be a classic example for "if it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't".

New skylake core m are quite impressive compared to old gen.

Here is a video of the Surface Pro 4 core m, about 3 hours doing benchmarks and gaming and the maximum temperature was only 57º C ! That's really great, also the CPU didn't throttle, always at 2 ghz frecuency.

Min 13:06 for temps and throttle results

Note that SP4 has a screen and also disipates heat from battery, so in the next rMB we could expect even better temps if Apple does the cooling right.

just wanted to drop a post .. i am always going from meeting to meeting so portability is high priority for me and the iPad and iOS will never fill my needs, I've purchased an iPad twice and each time i gave it away after 4 weeks - switching between apps is a mess, no file system, and non of the programs i really need were full versions, from my experience that toy does absolutely nothing for your productivity.

But working with big data (genetics) i recently found that cloud computing is a much better solution for me then buying a huge desktop or high-end laptop. i would recommend anyone who only has high CPU demands once or twice a day or a couple of times a week to look into to such a solution - it has increased my productivity quite a bit and all need now is a great laptop and a large screen in my office.

Anyway realizing the first gen rMB is not a great laptop (So much slower then my current MB air) was so disappointing, hoping the 2´ed gen rMB will be released within the next month or so.

Waiting for the Skylake rMB myself before considering getting it.

Can I ask what the MacBook was slow in doing? As in what tasks did it not live up to?

Thanks

well dont own a MB at the moment, only a MB air - but generally my python programs are GPU enabled so i would like to imagine the 2´ed gen MB preforms better then my current MB air. Just to clarify my previous post only served to enlighten others in this discussion, not everyone has the same needs - i personally, could never imagine my self playing a game on my MB or doing some sort of video editing, however i often need to run various algorithms with large datasets but my need for multiple quadcore processors can easily be bypassed by renting CPU power (cloud computing).

That being said, i dont understand why apple would release the rMB, a machine slower then it´s predecessor (MB air) - even-though they are different product lines it´s still sort of contradictory to moose's law,

I really want a rMB mainly for the uber portability with great screen. I hope they update it with Skylake soon, as I imagine that will help when I do a bit more photo/video editing. The iPP is great for 87% of the art I do, but the other 13% of video needs a full OS photo/video editing program. I just don't want the heavy and too big MacBook Pro. Conundrum...

Kallum.

if you have a macbook air with HD 5000 or hd 6000 that gpu will be stronger than the upcoming skylake

I'm with you. Although I know many people who find the iPad great, I much prefer a device that runs OS X. I'd love something like a Surface Pro, but since Apple doesn't offer that, the rMB is the closest I can get. I'm going to keep using my 2011 MB Air for now and wait to see what happens. If there's no update to the rMB by mid year, I may try a MB Pro. They're a bit heavier than I'd like, but lighter than the previous gen.

yes i did. HD 5000 or HD 6000 are better than the next iGPU from the MACBOOK ! maybe you were confused this is a macbook topic and not macbook pro

I'm not confused, I'm well read when it comes to uArch and Lithography, spent years studying it. Please read this article.
Intel is making major advancements in iGPU's, especially on their mobile offerings, why would they build a Skylake chip that performs worse than an uArch from 2013? (Broadwell aka 14nm Haswell).

So how much better will the Skylake Core M be better than the Broadwell Core M in terms of GPU?

HD 6000 is the chip in macbook air, and the next skylake chip M core is lower than HD6000 !

Yes core M igpu will be better than broadwell chip core m igpu by 40%
i was talking about the iGPU from macbook air, a mac that has OP

"Therefore, the HD 5300 just barely outperforms the old HD 4000"
So the next one HD510 will be 40% faster than HD 5300, so it will be almost between HD 4000 and HD 5000
Never better than HD6000, maybe in 2017

I was comparing the iGPU in the current rMB to the one that will likely be in the Skylake rMB. There will be a measurable difference, as well as improvements to the IO and better support for OpenGL and HEVC.
Also I wouldn't rely too heavily on Notebookcheck to compare performance.

yes but your reply was misplaced
i was talking to OP if he had a macbook air from 2013 or 2014 and he relies on the iGPU not to change with any macbook
because it is and will be weaker

He wasn't comparing the rMB to the Skylake rMB. Serban was talking about how the coming Skylake rMB would stack up against today's (2015) MBA and its Intel HD 6000.

I had hoped the Skylake rMB would be on par with the current MBA offerings, or at least the 2014 version, in terms of performance. Too bad.

For light (e.g. Internet) and office duty, the current rMB's iGPU is already sufficient. Skylake should bring some improvement to the video (playback) area (looking exclusively at the iGPU) and iron out whatever hiccups may still occur with the current iGPU for the mentioned light and office duty.

The MBA's iGPU may be more powerful, but not powerful enough for demanding things like e.g. games. And for use cases that don't need that much graphic power, the screen alone disqualifies the MBA when compared to the rMB. All imho.

these are the cpu for the next macbook?
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/core-m-processors.html
seems the same cpu core 1.1 1.2 and 1.3 ? wtf

Skylake can go up to 3,1ghz, has more memory bandwith and iGPU capable of 4k/60hz in 16:9 screens and 4k/24hz in 16:10. It's also reported to not throttle like the broadwell so performance is stable in long term use.

Broadwell 2,9ghz and a more weak iGPU which can only do 2560x1600 in external monitors.

What did you expect? Base speed it's not going to change so easily in this kind of ULV cpus
