You can take a look at the buyer's guide for a broad overview of mean times between refresh as it relates to other Apple notebooks. Take a look at the availability of cpus and Apple's implementation of them, and you'll see that it varies considerably. Sometimes official launch dates differ by several months. I'm not sure exactly when the Skylake m types ship.

Thanks for the link

It seems that they update every 200-300 days if i read the page correctly.
But this time, the release of skylake will be very close tothe previous release - broadwell - because Intel could not release broadwell on time.
Therefore, it seems that the ordinary schedule - update cycle, will not be the same this time around, thats why am asking this question here.

If they do not update it until September i will have to 'settle' with the macbook pro 13inch , which seems outdated if we take into consideration the new design of RMB.

Tough choices to be taken :p

Yeah, although it misses the point I wanted to make. Processor shipping times could still slip, and a Skylake refresh isn't really guaranteed this year. You can find several instances of cpus available in late Q3 to Q4, and notebooks released in the following year. I would have to look at specific release dates for core m types rather than a generic overview of skylake updates to make any other comments. I don't think any new design will be a drastic departure from the current rMBP. I think the main difference would be incorporation of the new trackpad design.

If they slip again thats a different story.. Hope they stay on schedule because i really like the new approach

Most projections here have been Q1 2016 at the earliest for the next rMB refresh with Skylake, and Q2 being more likely.

So i will have to get the Rmbp i guess :S ahh:S
I just need it for uni but the rmb at its current state wont last for 4-5 years in the future

Why not? I'm expecting mine to. (I might pass it on to a younger family member, but I expect it to be going strong)

Two things here: depending on what you're doing the MB will last 4 years. Can you stomach it if it gets a significant revision in 2 years (extra port, wireless dock/charging, support for 5k external display at 60hz) is the real question. Also? The sad truth is that everyone in university gets a new computer sometime during their 3rd year. Tech moves so fast

I do not really mind about wireless charging or connecting in to an external dis neither about the lack of ports.. I use cloud anw..

The issue is with the processor and if it will powerful enough to drive and be fluid for the next 4 years

What really sets the macbooks apart from the rest of laptops(win) is their stability and long lasting performance

The lack of fan is a massive plus for the device, and I don't see it reducing its longevity.

The processor is fine, and plenty powerful for your use case. Eventually the machine may slow down because it gets piled up with rubbish (in which case just keep it tuned up nicely), or it may slow down because of demanding new Software, (but that will happen with any model, and you can always just not install the lastest version).

I would claim that it will last 4-5 years just fine.

I hope so because i leaning towards this instead of 13pro

Do you think the 1.2 gh cpu would make a difference?

I got the 1.2 after looking at the Intel site, and also based on the rule that you should at least get the model above the lowest step.

Also 512gb seems like a good future-proofing of the storage.

If you're hesitating between rMBP and rMB, I'd say the choice depends mostly on how much you value portability.

----------

oh, and you should really get hands-on time with the rMB if you can. You'll kind-of know if it's for you after typing on it.

I wouldn't call the RMBP outdated. For a mere pound more weight you get twice the performance, a bigger display, infinitely more ports (since the MacBook has none), the ability to attach an external monitor, MagSafe, an HD webcam, and better battery life. The new MacBook is a very unApple product, impractical overkill design, thinness (or rather pretend thinness, since the edges are tapered to give the illusion thereof) at the cost of function.

It's totally possible they could bring it out soon. Remember when they made the iMac G5 with iSight camera, then a couple of months later released the Intel models. People were mad.

Both are portable enough :p
And i love the new keyboard , it does not have travel but its clicky :p

But its the future , thats the reason why the released it after taking icloud drive out of beta - to compensate for the lack of ports
And i do not use usbs or any external device whatsoever :p
Plus all that power is useless for everyday task imo except if you are editing video etc...
I have a custom pc for that

Lets hope intel releases the core m in summer so it can be rdy for september :p

Latest leaks say that Skylake is indeed beginning in the fall, but those will be desktop chips - notebook/ultrabook chips aren't due until mid-2016 or thereabout..

Its the other way around i think
the mobile chips come first and then the desktop parts.
This is what happened with broadwell as far as i am concerned

The new MacBook is about as Apple a product as possible. Steve Jobs was the first to kill off legacy ports, even before the replacement ports became mainstream. He started the whole "thinness" craze.

Anyway, the MacBook DOES have a USB port.

But Broadwell was a die shrink, meaning better energy efficiency, so there was more to be gained in battery life for laptops, whereas Skylake makes more sense on desktops as it's a new architecture for more power etc. So maybe it will come to desktop first.

Haswell mainly benefited laptops. It will be the same with skylake. 15-20% better efficiency and around 15% boost in performance or less
