Very nasty...

Saw someone mention something in another forum similar, but this "Beta", although installed correctly, completely wiped out my Wifi after a restart - was being prompted to Allow mDNS responder through Firewall and a few other weird looking errors... The Mac's clock was reset as well, and Keychain Access had weird access errors as well - installing 2.8 again and restarting seems to have fixed the issue..

Not sure if anyone has restarted since installing and had anything similar - I still feel like everything is not as smooth as it was before the install, but at least I have some network again now...

Going to wait until this is out of Beta for certain - this felt like a problem that might have been ported over from the Windows version!

I feel sorry for Skype. What a waste of time, resources, and money, developing this garbage, that they THINK is supposed to be better, and an improvement over the previous version, and make users happier. Totally wrong, then they have the audacity to say this will bring a more "mac-like experience," really?

Anyone noticed how horrifically amateur their "how to" vid is? Pretty sure they filmed it on some kind of DSLR with auto gain control for the audio, every time the guy stopped talking you could hear the background noise creeping up. Terribly unprofessional.

Related note, I passed Skypes London business today, quite surprised that it's just randomly plonked next to the BFI library.

Why feel sorry for them, just because a bunch of MR members (who represent hardly 1/10th of a percent of Skype's installed base) don't care for the new UI doesn't mean that they screwed up. They may have gotten a lot of requests from their installed base to make the UI into a single window system.

Go look on twitter, and Skype's blog. Everyone's pissed.

have to say after installing the new version excitedly and then quickly reinstalling the old version with btw how did they get to 5 from 2.8? thats some clever math....at least microsoft let everyone know msn was left behind for mac. Anyway, i could tell it was raping my cpu and causing the rest of my computer to run slowly as i have skype on 100% of the time and it just made everything especially WoW run *****. Also i dont know if anyone else has had the same problem but i couldnt hide it either it just seemed to flash the window but not actually disappear, twas very annoying! oh well maybe when they face some competition from the app store theyll put as much effort into mac and not bring out pointless features that just clog up, clearly just piling on the code! function first then asthetics, its not rocket science!

This type of application should be extremely frugal with the amount of pixels consumed. Adium has done it right, The new interface is really bad for this type of app.

So apparently there *is* a screen sharing option, it's buried in that menu with an arrow on it. You can't share a portion of the screen anymore, though.

everyone that has an issue with the new UI give Skype some feedback so there is more of a chance it will be changed in the release http://ecustomeropinions.com/survey/survey.php?sid=518496435

i said that there needs to be an option for a compact contact window (but not like the weak HUD window in the beta) and a separate chat window much like how Skype for Windows has a seperate window option.

the HUD contact window in the beta is a nice option but all it does it just display whos online... thats it! double clicking a contact will still send you back to the clunky, unnecessary large all-in-one window. i want a separate chat window!

Not just MR members, as Cougarcat pointed out, there's blogs about it, Tweets, Skype forum postings, news articles, etc., that negatively critique Skype 5.0's interface re-design.

I think when people said they want it up to par with the Window's version, they don't mean the huge interface, they want it all while still keeping a minimal GUI, which Skype didn't understand.

IMO

No Full Screen video chat?

It also seems that full screen video chat option has been removed. :(:(

Unless I'm overlooking it. Not good...

I like the idea of a unified window, but not crazy about the implementation here, too much white space and not compact enough. Would prefer a contacts list in the left hand column rather than recent conversations. I sent them feedback about this through the option in the file menu.

Unbelieviably bad

Skype has just launched a nifty little beta version of Skype 5.0 for Mac........

Nifty????

Painful is what I call it, I tried it out for a day then sent Skype this email below and re-installed 2.8 for Mac,

I am not adverse to change but this update is ridiculous.

--------------------------

Using 5.0 Beta for Mac,

1. Can I select ALL or some of the recent chats on the left hand side using either CMD or SHIFT key and delete them all at once? NO....

At the moment the only way to delete each individual conversation is by right clicking and CLOSE, (very painful)

2. can there be a setting to not have all these conversations down the left hand side at all, once I have finished the conversation, I don't want to see it again. I have history if I want it, this is not email, this is chat.

3. I don't want to see whithin a open conversation what time I called this person and when I hung up from him/her, that's what your history is for.

4. When I am in a video call with someone, how do I send them text? I couldn't type and video call to the same person, in fact I couldnt type to another contact and still see the person I am on the video call with.....at the same time.

4. Why is everything so big? the window can only be downsized to a certain size, the font is too big, I can only see 13 total contacts online/offline on a 13.3 inch screen, what if there are 30 contacts online at once, there is no list view of who is online except if you select the Contacts Monitor.

5. After I finish a text chat, why do I have to then select my groups manually, shouldn't it default to who is online after a certain period of time? or have a setting when I finish a chat I can delete it and it will then show whom is online

Over all, a poorly designed product adding no more functionality and it is definatly not easier to use, not thought out at all for the end user, big bulky and not user friendly, you had a nice compact straight forward product in 2.8, this is a big white elephant

I am deleting 5.0 and going back to 2.8 until you have soughted it out

If Skype Corp. think that a video/messaging app has to look like, say, iTunes and occupy 100% of the screen space, they blew it!!

Skype does NOT equal iTunes or Safari or Final Cut Pro. Get it???

Skype is a freaking video/messaging app. All we need is a small window with contact names. Hello.

If you have a 11.6 MBA then you need to assign one whole Desktop in Spaces just for Skype :p ... Seriously, what a waste of real estate, with huge empty spaces here and there/ Almost as in Windows explorer or something

not in 2.8

haven't seen any in the 10 minutes i played around with 5.0, either

Yeah, 2.8 doesn't have the pop-up ads, and nor does 3.8 (or 3.6, which works on 7 x64) for Windoze.

I found that I would get a little green pop-up 2 or 3 times a day like this on Windows v4.x, and found it incredibly annoying. The most annoying bit was that it only seems to appear if you have credit - they only do it to paying customers!
